Grizzlies travel to Boise State, for basketball games

After splitting a pair of Big Sky Conference home games the University of

Montana basketball team travels to Boise State and the Thursday and Saturday, Jan. 17 and 19.

Both games will begin at 8 p.m. (MST), and will be aired on KYLT-AM, with

"Grizzly" Bill Schwanke calling the play-by-play. Schwanke has been doing UM sports for nine seasons. He was recently named the Montana Sportscaster of the

Year, for the second straight year. It is the fourth time he has won the award.

KYLT begins its broadcast at 7:45 with the scouting report.

The Grizzlies kept their post-season playoff hopes alive last Thursday, blitzing visiting Idaho State 77-54. Montana then played nationally ranked

Weber State (20th) head-to-head, losing 51-48 in the closing minutes.

"We played about as well as could be expected," said coach .

"We matched up very good against Weber State. Stroedes (John Stroeder) had an excellent game, and played very good against Idaho State." (He went 8 of 10 from the field in both games, scoring 19 points in each).

Thursday's foe, Boise State, is now 7-8 overall, and improved its conference record to 1-2 with a 71-68 overtime road win over the Idaho Vandals. Bronco center Dave Richardson (6-9) was the key player in the victory, scoring 25 points.

He was named the co-Big Sky player of the week for his performance.

The loss to Boise State was Idaho's first home loss in five games. The Vandals are now 1-2 in overtime games this season. Coach Don Monson's team is 8-7 overall, and winless (0-3) in the Big Sky.

Richardson is one of two returning starters off BSU's squad, which was 11-15 overall (6-8 in the Big Sky) last year. BSU leads the series 11-8. Last year's scores: UM 61, BSU 50 (in Missoula), BSU 79, UM 78 OT (in Boise).

Idaho was also 11-15 last season (4-10 in the conference) and has three returning starters. The Vandal's key player is guard , who leads the

Big Sky in scoring with a 17.1 average. Idaho leads the long series, 63--43.
