Raymond A. Roesch, S.M., President of the University of Dayton, will make his second overseas trip in a year this month when he goes to Paris, Spain, Italy, Switzerland and West Germany. His visit, at the invitation of the French Government, is to study international education as it could apply to the University of Dayton. Father Roesch, while presenting the 1967 Marianist Award to President Eduardo Frei-Montalva of Chile last May, visited universities in three South American countries to study possible exchange programs. Out of that trip, Father Roesch established the Office of International Education on campus. He placed Dr. Mario Saquel of the Langu- ages in charge of the office. Dr. Saquel is currently formulating educational programs for the University, its faculty and students. While in Europe from March 15 to April 19, Father Roesch will visit universities in Paris, Nantes) Angers, Strasbourg, Bordeaux) and Nice. He also has a meeting scheduled with the French Minister of Education. He will visit schools in Madrid, Rome, and Freibourg, Switzerland. During his Rome visit he will meet with Very Rev. Joseph Hoffer, Superior General of the Society of Mary, and Rev. Thomas Stanley, former UD Provost who is in charge of the Marianists Zeal program. His final trip will be to Dayton's Sister City, Augsburg, West Germany. He hopes to observe colleges in that area if there is time. He also will have lunch with Mayor Pepper of Augsburg. Father Roesch, in making this second trip, expressed the desire for "strengthening our own international education program. A year abroad program should offer courses which are not areas of specialty at UD and, in turn, we could offer foreign students courses, such as computer science, which are not specialties in Europe. Being a French Protestant in 1559
May 25, 1559 It is hard to envision being a French Protestant in May 1559. Some pastors and ministers elected from groups of Reformed churches were accompanied by Elders from those churches similarly elected. They arrived on foot or horseback or carriage. They came from Paris, and from towns in northwestern, central, southern and south-western France, to attend the First National Synod of the Reformed Church or Synode Premier National des Eglises Reformées de France in Paris. The men travelled in some secrecy since they were subject to the increasingly draconian laws promulgated to suppress the heresy of Protestantism. Books, printed material, and speech were severely censored. The last of the edits to repress the Huguenots was the Edict of Compiègne issued in July 1557. It mandated the death sentence for all Calvinists. Despite the repression of Henri II, the Reformed faith was spreading quickly in France, among women and men, nobles, aristocrats, and ordinary, mostly middle class persons. Still the men entering Paris for the Synod would have done so cautiously. We do know from the cover of the printed proceedings that the groups of churches represented were located at: St. Lo, Dieppe, Angers, Orléans, Tours, Poitiers, Saintes, Marennes, Castelheraud, and St.- Jean d’Angeli. The Synod was convened from May 25-28, 1559 by François Morel, the pastor of the Church of Paris. An influential contributor to the Synod was Antoine de la Roche Chandieu, a friend and pupil of Jean Calvin. Calvin had sent a draft confession of faith and three delegates to Paris. But it was the Synod and Chandieu that gave the confession its final forty articles.

Loire Valley Destination Guide Overview of Loire Valley Renowned for its fine wine, sumptuous châteaux and Renaissance intrigue, the valley of the Loire is rich in both history and architecture. Like the River Loire, this vast region runs through the heart of French life. Its sophisticated cities, luxuriant landscapes and magnificent food and wine add up to a bourgeois paradise. The Loire Valley was for a long period, until Henri IV moved his court to Paris, the home of French royalty and the intellectual capital of France. Historic towns and magnificent châteaux line the valley to this day. The towns of Tours and Angers, both on the river, act as good bases from which to explore the area and its many delights. Although there are train and bus services to most towns, they do limit tourists and it is best to hire transport to fully explore the region. Visitors should consider renting a bike. However, those who want to avoid the crowds should not visit in August, as this is the month when the French have their national holiday and things can get busy.
