SONGBIRD LOOKS TO HANG TEN IN ALABAMA STARS ALIGN FOR by Alan Carasso Fox Hill Farm=s champion Songbird (Medaglia d=Oro) looks to PACIFIC CLASSIC take her career record to a perfect 10-for-10 and will attempt to join an elite group of fillies as the long odds-on favorite in Saturday=s GI Alabama S. at Saratoga. Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, who sent out eventual 3-year-old filly champion Blind Luck (Pollard=s Vision) to best Fox Hill=s Havre de Grace (Saint Liam) in the 2010 renewal of this storied event, the >TDN Rising Star= ran the table in her four tries last term, clinching her title with a decisive front-running success in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Fillies at Keeneland. She ran her winning streak to seven with an authoritative success in the GI Santa Anita Oaks Apr. 9 and would have been everyone=s choice to add the GI Kentucky Oaks, but an elevated temperature ruled her out of the fillies= centerpiece. Returning from that 70-day hiatus with a galloping score in the GII Summertime Oaks June 18, she was tested really and truly for the first time in this track=s GI CCA Oaks July 24, but took >TDN Rising Star= Carina Mia (Malibu Moon)=s best shot and kicked home to score by 5 1/4 lengths. Bertrando (Skywalker) helped put the race on the map with wins in 1991 (inaugural running) and 1993, respectively, while Dare and Go (Alydar) famously snapped Cigar (Palace Music)=s 16-race skein before a stunned crowd two decades ago. Juddmonte Farms claimed four Classic trophies in the space of seven years courtesy of back-to-back winners Tinners Way () and Skimming (Nureyev), while all-time Golden State greats like Lava Man (Slew City Slew) and Game On Dude () have also left their mark. In 2014, the late Shared Belief (Candy Ride {Arg}) silenced many of his critics with an imperious success, only to be topped last year by Beholder (Henny Hughes), who gave trainer Richard Mandella a fourth Classic with a devastating and historic victory. So, what does Del Mar conjure up for an encore? As if an appearance by the race=s defending champion weren=t draw card enough, the Classic has attracted 2014 Horse of the Year California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit), who will try to join Pleasantly Perfect as standing winners of the G1 Dubai World Cup to double up at Del Mar; and >TDN Rising Star= Dortmund (Big Brown), who gave California Chrome all he could handle in the GII San Diego H. FEATURE PRESENTATION • GI PACIFIC CLASSIC

TVG Pacific Classic cont. from p1 California Chrome looks to continue what connections hope will be a second Horse of the Year title in three years, a season that could conclude with career earnings in the vicinity of $16 million, if all goes according to plan. Since settling for the $2- million second prize in the 2015 G1 Dubai World Cup, the flashy chestnut has not tasted defeat in four tries, a streak that includes a 3 3/4-length tally in the world=s richest race this past Mar. 26 despite a mechancal malfunction. Given plenty of time to get his sea legs back under himself, so to speak, California Chrome stalked Dortmund every step of the way in the San Diego while giving his younger rival five pounds, but just when it looked like the race was in safe keeping, the bruising Dortmund- -who=s shown before that he loves a battle--fought on bravely, ultimately surrendering by a half-length. It=s level weights Saturday, in theory tipping the scales further in the direction of California Chrome, but Victor Espinoza will have to try to work out a trip from the one hole. AThe No. 1 post is never good at any track but being a former jockey, I know that if he [Victor Espinoza] rides the right race, the No. 1 post isn=t going to be a problem,@ trainer Art Sherman said Wednesday. AIt depends on how the early fractions are and then you just go from there. It=s going to be a jockey=s race. It=s going to be a fan friendly race, I can tell you that.@ In many ways, Dortmund is the dark horse of of this year=s handicap division. Winner of the GI Los Alamitos Futurity at two, the burly chestnut took the GI Santa Anita Derby and was third to American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) in the GI Kentucky Derby, but was sidelined following an up-the-track effort in the GI Preakness S. In the San Diego, Dortmund was having his first start since besting Imperative (Bernardini) Dortmund | Benoit this track=s GIII Native Diver S. last November, his 110 Beyer easily the best of his career. His trackwork since has been brilliant, supporting the notion that there could be another forward move in store. Cont. p4

WINX ON SONG FOR SEASONAL RETURN ANOTHER NUNTHORPE On Saturday afternoon, about 18 hours and an ocean apart, FOR MECCA=S ANGEL two of the world=s three top-rated horses will see action. California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit) will try to run his current winning streak to five in the Grade I Pacific Classic in California, but several hours earlier, Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) will take the first step towards a title defence in October=s G1 Cox Plate when she goes postward in the G2 Warwick S. (1400m) at Royal Randwick in Sydney. Winner of her last nine trips to the post, the 5-year-old makes her first start since a barnstorming success in the G1 Doncaster H. at The Championships Apr. 2. Despite a strong first-up record of four wins from five starts, owner Debbie Kepitis admits to feeling the heat. "There's always an air of confidence when you have a good horse, but I feel that when they come back for their first race it's always the hardest race to win," Kepitis told AAP. "She looks better, she looks stronger, but until she races on Saturday you really don't know. But it won't matter to us. For the public's sake I want her to win."

Nunthorpe S. 12 months ago, David Metcalfe=s Mecca=s Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) was back on her favoured Knavesmire on Friday to foil another heavily-backed favourite in Limato (Ire) (Tagula {Ire}) for back-to-back successes in the sprint highlight. Expertly ridden by Paul Mulrennan, the 9-2 second favourite was just off the pace but without a lead to complicate matters early as the heavily-backed 15-8 market-leader Limato tracked her at just over a length distance. That was as close as he ever got, as after the grey had taken the overall lead passing the quarter pole she was too strong and hit the line with two lengths to spare. AShe=s an aeroplane on her day--the best,@ her rider said. AThat was probably her best performance and she=s a very special filly. I=d love to say she=s complicated and I have to do this and that, but I just have to point her.@ If opponents of Mecca=s Angel had a glimmer of hope that she might have gone off the boil and left the five-furlong category wide-open after her flop when beating only one of her 17 rivals in the G1 King=s Stand S. at Royal Ascot June 14, she made it clear on her last start that she was back on song. Coolmore Nunthorpe S. cont. Her three-length dismissal of the G3 Sandown Sprint S. winner Brando (GB) ( {GB}) in the G2 Sapphire S. over this trip at The Curragh July 16 suggested that connections were right in putting her Royal reversal down to her being in season. Interestingly, the mare who has become typecast as a mud-lover due to her trainer=s past unwillingness to risk her on ground with firm in the description was unable to flow on the rain-softened surface at Ascot, which compounded her problems that day. It was only good-to-soft when she captured this race and also the G3 Prix de Saint-Georges at Longchamp last term and as luck would have it just enough drizzle fell in the build-up to this race to eliminate any prospect of jar. Banishing the memory of her King=s Stand debacle and also the disappointment of her second on her seasonal bow to Profitable (Ire) ( {Ire}) in the G2 Temple S. also over five at Haydock May 21, it was the Mecca=s Angel of Nunthorpe past from the outset as she gave Limato a tow towards the far side with the real pace of the race slightly ahead and to her right. Paul Mulrennan was keen to draw the sting from the G1 July Cup winner who was slipstreaming all the way and asked his mount to extend approaching the quarter pole. In front soon after, she was able to give another surge to settle the result some way out and just miss Dayjur=s track record in the process. Michael Dods has carefully stage-managed Mecca=s Angel=s career and deserves great credit for not being impulsive with his stable star in the past. As usual, he had to go through his anxious AI=m still convinced he=d get a mile if necessary, but we needed moments leading up to the race. AI had a sleepless night last to see him run a race like that over five furlongs to have any night, because I knew they weren=t going to put any water on confidence in the Breeders= Cup, so six furlongs over there will and driving here today I got to within half an hour of the track be ideal for him.@ and it was raining,@ he explained. AI was happy to let her run, as I Mecca=s Angel, who is the bargain purchase of recent years, is knew it would be good ground come the race and this is the a half to the G3 Chipchase S. and G3 Criterion S. winner Markaz ground she wants. She doesn=t want it soft--on this she=s got who was ironically second to Limato in last year=s G2 Park S. Her another two gears. I said to Paul to just keep it simple, jump, dam and second dam both achieved black-type, with Desert travel, take a lead and when you=re happy push the button. Dawn considerably better having won the G3 Prix d=Arenberg She=s quickened away and had it won two out. She won=t race and finished second in the G3 Norfolk S. Folga=s Dark Angel next year--she=ll be sold to stud--but I=ll be keen to try her over 2-year-old filly named Dirayah (Ire) cost 825,000gns at six before she retires. There=s a possibility she could run in both.@ Henry Candy was proud of Limato, who did everything right bar match the more pacier winner. AI think he=s run as well today as he did at Newmarket and he ran in a straight line, Mecca’s Angel’s connections earn: which was nice to see,@ he said. AI was very happy where he was Automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint and he got a lovely lead and quickened up really well, but that & $30,000 in Pre-Entry & Entry Fees mare is absolutely astonishing over five furlongs and that=s the $10,000 or $40,000 travel award for ALL BCWC starters difference between a five-furlong specialist and a six-furlong (based outside CA) specialist.
