What is DeMolay?

DeMolay is the largest youth fraternity in the world. The Order of DeMolay was started over 80 years ago in Kansas City, . DeMolay is a character building organization for young men who are 12 to 21 years of age. In over 700 chapters throughout the , these young men have the opportunity to develop management, leadership and social skills as they participate in community projects, sports, and other educational programs. DeMolay also has chapters in Canada, , , , Panama, , , and the Republic of the .

More than two million young men have been members of DeMolay. Alumni members include , Pete Rose, Walt Disney, Dan Rather, Willard Scott, Burl Ives, and countless others. DeMolay's alumni are distinguished leaders including many U.S. senators, state governors, U.S. astronauts, professional athletes, and major U.S. corporation presidents. DeMolay is dedicated to providing a safe environment in an organization for young men who govern and direct their own activities under the "advisorship" of adults. The organization develops leadership skills and character building in the young men who work within the organization. It helps members to develop civic awareness and responsibility.

DeMolay provides young men the opportunity to practice leadership techniques and the real world application of the same through its chapter activities. The organization assists young men in growing into responsible adults with good moral character while providing them a place to go, have fun, companionship, be accepted by peers and develop solid values. DeMolay is not only teaching young people about the working tools of life, it is serving as the cornerstone of our next generation.

DeMolay International Distinguished Service Award Reporting Form

The ISC established the Distinguished Service Award in the fall of 1959. In some jurisdictions, this award is known as the "DeMolay of the Year" award. The purpose of the award is to recognize one DeMolay in each jurisdiction for outstanding service to others, in his home, school, church, Chapter, community and country.

The Chapter's Advisory Council members select one or more members of the Chapter whom they believe worthy of this recognition. Adult leaders in the community then are asked to evaluate the nominee's performance in various areas.

When all of the endorsers' recommendations have been returned to the Chapter, the Advisory Council selects one Chapter member as it's nominee for the DSA and sends the nomination to the Executive Officer. The Executive Officer also has the privilege of making a personal nomination. Nominations may be made twice each year.

After receiving the nominations from all the Chapters, the Executive Officer selects one of the DeMolays for the Distinguished Service Award.

What is DeMolay? DeMolay is fun. DeMolay is and can be most anything you would like it to be. We have sports, dances, all sorts of competitions in all sorts of areas and it's the largest fraternal (fraternity) organization for young men in the world. What do you do? We do almost everything and anything. We have dances, parties, and picnics. We play most sports from basketball to softball to volleyball. How big is DeMolay? DeMolay was started in 1919, and since that time over 4 million young men just like us have joined. Today there are about 1500 chapters, located in the United States, Canada and several other countries. Who belongs to DeMolay? Lots of guys just like us, who like to have fun at great activities and to learn things that will prepare them (and us) for the future. What are the membership requirements? To join DeMolay, you must be a young man between the ages of twelve and twenty-one; believe in a supreme being; be a person of good character and good reputation; and petition a DeMolay chapter. How much does it cost to join? There is a ONE! time membership fee of $55.00. We do have to pay for some of the activities we do.... When and where do you meet? Most of the Chapters meet in Halls. We meet twice a month, once to conduct business and plan projects and activities, and once to initiate new members or work on some type of project, like finishing last minute details for a softball game or a dance. Can I attend a meeting? Well, you can't formally attend a meeting until you join, but you can come to our activities and meet some of the guys. If you really want to attend a meeting to see what it's like, you can come down to our next meeting for a while and I will introduce you to all the guys. Are there any girls in DeMolay? DeMolay is an organization for young men, but there are girls at almost all of our activities. There are other organizations, for young ladies, similar to DeMolay, and sponsored by the Masonic Family such as Job's Daughters, and Rainbow Girls.

http://www.scjdemolay.org/faq.htm (1 of 3) [7/23/2000 2:08:45 PM] Frequently Asked Questions [FAQ] What makes DeMolay different from other young men's organizations? What sets us apart from the other young men's groups is that we have a feeling of "brotherhood" that comes from belonging to our fraternity. DeMolay will provide you with many lasting friendships. What are the ceremonies I would go through? Ever since DeMolay began in 1919, all of its members have gone through the same initiation ceremonies. When you join you will go through the same one that all DeMolays went through, including John Wayne, Walt Disney, Walter Cronkite, and Dan Rather. What is the initiation like? To be a DeMolay you must go through two ceremonies, which we call "degrees". The first is the Initiatory Degree where the Seven Cardinal Virtues (Precepts) of a DeMolay are explained to you by the members of the chapter. The second degree is the DeMolay Degree. This one is great, it's where we dress up in costume and put on a play for you to watch. The play is about the trials of Jacques DeMolay (the person DeMolay is named after), and teaches us about the bonds of friendship and loyalty we share as DeMolay MEMBERS. What are the seven cardinal virtues? They are the basic principles that we feel help us to be better people. They are: 1. Filial Love (Love of Parents) 2. Reverence for Sacred Things (Respect for things you feel are important, or for things others feel are important.) 3. Courtesy 4. Comradeship (Friendship) 5. Fidelity (Being true to your friends and beliefs) 6. Cleanness 7. Patriotism Is DeMolay a religious group? No. DeMolay is not a religious group, DeMolay teaches no religion but expects each member to profess a belief in a Supreme Being and be tolerant in your opinion of others. What is a fraternity? A fraternity is an organization whose members have a special bond with one another regardless of age or position. It is a brotherhood built on common interests. Is DeMolay a secret fraternity? We are not a secret fraternity, and hold no secrets from non-members as to our type of organization, our purposes, activities and beliefs. What are your secrets? The only thing that someone might consider secret about DeMolay are our passwords, signs, and handshakes. This is our way, like all fraternities, to make being a member really special. Where does the name DeMolay come from?

http://www.scjdemolay.org/ritual/acinstall.html (2 of 2) [7/23/2000 2:08:57 PM] The Ceremony of Light

Ceremony of Light I stand before you at this sacred DeMolay altar, upon which we have placed the mighty bulwarks of our faith: the Holy Bible and the school books. Not far away rests the banner of our beloved country. Standing as sentries are these seven burning candles, beacons in the darkness, lights to illuminate our pathway as we journey ever onward down the road of life. They are symbols of all that is good and right with the world. They are the standards upon which we as DeMolays have pledged to base our lives.

The first candle symbolizes the love between parent and child, that love which existed before we were born, has remained with us all our life through and will follow us even beyond the grave. The sages named this love "agapé", love for no other reason than the sake of being.

The second candle is emblematic of reverence for all that is sacred. A young man crossing the threshold of DeMolay for the first time professes a deep and abiding faith in one living and true God. Without this steadfast faith and the grace of our Heavenly Father, our toil would be for nothing.

The third candle stands for courtesy, a courtesy that transcends friendships, a courtesy which reaches to the stranger, to the aged, to all men. It is this courtesy that brings a warm feeling and a smile and makes this life more pleasant for others as it lights the pathway before us.

The fourth candle, the candle in the center of our seven, stands symbolically for comradeship. Millions of young men such as ourselves have knelt as this symbolic altar and dedicated themselves to the same high principles of good sonship and good citizenship. As long as we remain faithful to these pledges, as long as there is an Order of DeMolay, we are one.

The fifth candle stands simply for fidelity. A DeMolay can never justly be false to his vows, his promises, his friends, his God. He is called upon daily to defend the bulwarks and precepts of the Order that he might never fail as a leader or as a man.

The sixth candle is symbolic of cleanness. Not only the bodily cleanness which we all practice, but the cleanness of every thought, word and deed. Only in cleanness can a DeMolay rightly be representative of the pureness of our teachings.

The last candle is emblematic of patriotism. Perhaps we shall never be called upon to defend our country on the field of battle, but each day affords new opportunities to stand as good and upright citizens on behalf of that beloved banner and our hallowed land. http://www.scjdemolay.org/ritual/col.html (1 of 2) [7/23/2000 2:08:59 PM] The Ceremony of Light

Yet we live in troubled times when the bulwarks of the Bible, flag and school books are in danger of sinking into the waste of doubt and uncertainty; when these seven glorious precepts may not be the most coveted standards upon which to base one's life; when trust and justice and brotherhood may not be considered the most virtuous of qualities.

And if we as DeMolays do not stand unswervingly in defense of the teachings of our Order, if we do not seek to perpetuate them in our daily lives, then perhaps these flames will be extinguished, muted in the shadows and darkness shall inherit the land.

Yet each of you, as a DeMolay, holds within your heart a flame, a beacon to guide you through the darkness. If you can make this light shine upon another, if you can reach into the innermost depths of his soul and set his flame afire, then therein lies the purpose of the Order of DeMolay, and therein lies your purpose for living.

After the brethren have greeted the Executive Officer, MC welcomes him in his own words and then invites Executive Officer to join him in the East. They ascend to the East. Adj either ascends to the East behind them or goes to another seat in the Chapter room. Mar, moves U Z X, faces West.

MC - Dad...... , in token of our loyalty and devotion to our Order, to its Supreme Council, and to the principles and precepts inculcated by our ritual and by the pledges we have made, I tender you the gavel and the chair. Executive Officer accepts the gavel and seats the Chapter.

EO - * (rap) All sit down.

At his pleasure, he then takes the MC's station and presides or he returns the gavel to the MC who proceeds with the Chapter's affairs. The EO may at any later time in the proceedings assume the gavel and the chair. When the EO is presiding, all further proceedings are under his sole control unless and until he resigns the gavel and chair to MC. When the MC is presiding, the EO sits in the chair immediately to the North of the MC. If the EO desires to retire before the Chapter is closed, the Adj. moves to U, says:

Adj - Brother Master Councilor and Brethren, the Executive Officer is about to retire from the Chapter room.

MC - * * * (3 raps) All stand. EO, escorted by MC, descends to U, where Adj and Mar. join them. They form a line facing West, in Order North to South: Adj, EO, MC, Mar. MC takes one step back and others face South and move U T A. As they reach point T, JD moves X Z A, opens door. As they exit, MC moves U X, faces West. Mar immediately returns to Chapter room. JD closes door, moves Z X, faces East. Mar moves A T Z X, faces west.

CHEVALIER INVESTITURE The Degree of Chevalier is an open investiture and must be given exactly as herein stated without any deletions or additions hereto. No designate may be invested with the degree unless his regalia is in the possession of the presiding officer.

The investiture as written has taken into account the opportunity for splendid musical effects and choral accompaniment.

The entire ritual must be delivered from memory except for the reading of Psalm 91. If not presided over by the Executive Officer for the jurisdiction, only Chevaliers, or such other persons whom he may designate, shall be used in the investiture. The presiding officer is known as the Grand Commander. An escort of Knights Templar, members of the Legion of Honor, Chevaliers, or members of a DeMolay Chapter may be used at the Altar and in processions.

Required parts: Grand Commander in the East: G.C.; Commander in the West: C.W.; Commander in the South: C.S.; Grand Marshal: G.Mar.; Grand Chaplain: G.Ch.

Required Paraphernalia: Holy Bible open on Altar; school books on Northeast corner of Altar; a lectern placed in the East, to the South of the G.C; a sample ring must be on hand in the event no one receiving the degree elects to purchase ring; kneeling pads.

Optional Paraphernalia: Seven candlesticks with candles; the National flag in a standard; the Chapter banner in a standard, all placed as indicated on Diagram One; Altar cloth; Altar flowers; pedestal covers; baton for Grand Marshal.

After a prelude by the organist, the Officers enter single file as follows: G.Mar., G.C., C.S., W.W., and G.Ch., followed by escort of Knights Templar, etc. G.Mar. leading the procession moves C E V T C E V Z X dropping off the G.C., CS, WW, and then G.Ch. at their respective stations. G.Mar. faces West. Escort floorwork will be devised for the individual situation.

G.C. - * (rap) All except G.C. sit down.

G.C. - I count it a privilege to be permitted to preside at this conferring of the Degree of Chevalier. In a few moments we shall witness a ceremony that is as symbolic of citizenship as the Athenian Oath and as profound in religious significance as the creation of a knight in the days of chivalry. Even before the tine of Nineveh or the building of King Solomon's Temple -- ere the Egyptians built their pyramids and Jason sought the Golden Fleece, or soldiers of fortune followed the Eagles of Rome, it was an ancient custom to honor those to whom honors were due.

Brother Grand Marshal, you will present those who are about to be created Chevaliers of the Order of DeMolay. G.Mar. moves X Z T, thence to place where designates are seated, and conducts them to point U, facing East.

G.Mar. - Brother Grand Commander, I present to you and to the members of the Order of DeMolay and the assembled guests ...... (speaks name of each designate) who have been designated by our Supreme Council to be elevated to the rank and dignity of a Chevalier of the Order of DeMolay.

G.C. - My brothers, you have just been presented to me for elevation to the highest honor for distinguished DeMolay service within the gift of The International Supreme Council. Only one other honor, the Legion of Honor, for outstanding adult leadership and service to humanity, outranks the distinction I am about to confer upon you.

You have been selected from the membership of ...... Chapter as having rendered exceptional service in behalf of the Order of DeMolay and this Chapter in particular. Your efforts in the various activities of the Order have been numerous and have reflected beyond our Order to a lasting benefit of all youth. Your material gains are beyond price, but great as they are -- they are of little consequence when compared with their spiritual significance. In every willing act of your life, you have performed -- let us say -- divine service, because he who acts nobly does God's will. If this is not true, then your performances have been in vain. The work in which you have

http://www.scjdemolay.org/ritual/chev.html (2 of 8) [7/23/2000 2:09:05 PM] The Chevalier Investiture been engaged cannot be measured by the standards of men. Therefore, as inspired workers in our cause, you have been called here to receive honors in the presence of your brethren and friends. I can think of no better approach to this investiture than that we heed the Grand Chaplain as he reads to us the inspired words of David who sang of the security of the godly in the ninety-first chapter of the Psalms. G.Ch. rises, moves X Z, thence to lectern placed in East and to the South of G.C., and reads the ninety-first Psalm.

G.Ch. - He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;

Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.

Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;

There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.

They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.

With long life I will satisfy him, and show him my salvation. G.Ch. moves from lecturn Z X, faces West, and sits down.

G.C. - My brothers, in the days that are to come, may these words of the Psalmist ever be before you, a beacon to light your way to the very throne of God. As children of a universal Father, acknowleding that He is "All and in All," it is fitting that you who are about to receive this honor should, throughout all the years of your life, be a humble and consecrated son of God. Outward observance of religion means little http://www.scjdemolay.org/ritual/chev.html (3 of 8) [7/23/2000 2:09:05 PM] The Chevalier Investiture unless there is within a deep sense of soul. In the character of a Chevalier of the Order of DeMolay, may you in every act, manner and circumstance, prove worthy of this universal sonship. I, therefore, dedicate you anew to the service of God and all humanity.

Brother Grand Marshal, you will conduct these brethren to the Commander in the South. Suggested Music cue:

G.Mar. conducts designates U T C E V T L, faces South.

G.Mar. - Brother Commander, I present to you these brethren who have been designated by our Supreme Council to be elevated to the rank and dignity of a Chevalier of the Order of DeMolay.

C.S. - My brothers, in this hour of consecration I again remind you of that sacred thing called home. There is a magic in that little word, home; it is a mystic circle that surrounds comforts and virtues never known beyond its hallowed limits. It is the cradle -- the very bulwark of our civilization. Ever since you first knelt at the Altar of DeMolay you have been committed to the high purpose of being a better son, a better husband, a better father, and a better man as the years move on. As a Chevalier, I dedicate you anew to the DeMolay ideal of home and all that the word implies.

Brother Grand Marshal, you will conduct these brethren to the Commander in the West. Suggested music cue:

G.Mar. conducts designates L C E V T C D, faces West.

G.Mar. - Brother Commander, I present to you these brethren who have been designated by our Supreme Council to be elevated to the rank and dignity of a Chevalier of the Order of DeMolay.

G.W. - My brothers, I receive you upon one of the cardinal points of DeMolay -- love of country; the deeper patriotism that does not unfurl the flag on holidays alone, or rattle the flashing saber in a manacing threat, but rather that patriotism which, while making known to every man his rights, still makes him mindful of the rights of every other man. Our forefathers gave us a heritage that gives to all the sincere hope of being brave men and serving patriots. It is well that we here should rededicate ourselves to the threefold purpose of DeMolay -- love of God, love of home, and love of country. Your leadership through the years, if charted on these principles, "will make you live worthily for your country as well as die bravely for it if the need shall come." I dedicate you anew to the DeMolay ideal of patriotism. You will now be conducted to our Holy Altar.

G.Mar. causes designates to face East, then move D J. An escort of Knights Templar, Legion of Honor members, Chevaliers, or Chapter members with swords may be used with good effect in making an arch of steel over designates and Altar.

G.C. - My brothers, you have already signed your Vows of Allegiance that it may be deposited in the archives of the International Supreme Council. You now appear at this Altar to assume a public obligation of service before being created a Chevalier of the Order of DeMolay and receiving its regalia. G.C. - Then you will kneel on both knees.... Designates kneel.

G.C. - ... and place both hands upon the Holy Bible. Done.

G.C. - You will say "I", speak your name in full, and repeat after me: Done.

G.C. pauses after each phrase of convenient length in the Obligation, to give designates an opportunity to repeat it. A diagonal is placed at suggested points for pausing, but G.C. should understand that he may phrase as he chooses.

G.C. - In the presence of Almighty God / and these witnesses here assembled, / do solemnly promise, covenant, and vow / that I will, from this time forward, / militantly and with the deepest devotion, / serve the Order of DeMolay / and the truths it teaches.

I do now, and hereon, / renew and rededicate myself / to all of the vows / I have heretofore taken / in the Order of DeMolay.

Dad Land Talk

In DeMolay history, November the 8th marks the anniversary of the Death of the founder of our order: Frank S. Land. DeMolay began with nine boys and a man; tonight I would like to look back on that beginning, our beginning.

Frank Land was a mason who was asked by a fellow member to find a job for young Louis Lower, whose father had died the year before. Although Louie's mother had taken a job, the family was still having a tough time of it, so Louie had decided to do his part in helping his family get by. Frank said he would be glad to help and hired Louie to work with him. Frank wasn't just an employer to Louie though he became a friend and a confidante, he took time to listen to Louie, to learn about his hopes and problems to find out his dreams and help him to achieve them. It was clear to Land that Louie needed more than just a job, and Louie with many other young men might need the same things.

It was February of 1919, and Louie Lower arranged for himself and eight of his friends to meet with Frank Land to discuss the formation of a club. The boys were all eager to do so but first they wanted a name. Frank Land told them of the heroic figures from the past and the one that stuck in their minds was Jacques DeMolay who had given up his life in the spirit of Comradeship. Less than a month later the Order of DeMolay held its first meeting. It wasn't long after that, that perhaps the biggest milestone in DeMolay was passed, the membership of DeMolay had grown from its initial nine members to over sixty. And one of the young members put forward a motion to limit the club to seventy-five members, there was only a short discussion and the motion was passed unanimously.

Frank Land, or Dad, as he had simply come to be known as by the boys, stepped forward to speak. The members where silent, for Frank had always told them that it was their organisation and he had not spoken except at the end of meetings since he first met. But "Dad" did indeed have something to say that night. He told the boys that they were making a mistake that they where being selfish. He pointed out that all their members were from a single school in Kansas City had gained from there membership, and that there was no reason that other boys from other schools should not be allowed to gain from and contribute to DeMolay. He reminded them that "To become big, we must be big." The motion to limit membership was reconsidered and defeated.

Dad Land was right when he said that many boys could gain from and contribute to DeMolay, but he probably had no idea just how many boys. By January of 1921, DeMolay had grown to 52 Chapters across the United States with membership over 2200 members. A year later there was over 165 Chapters with membership in excess of 28000, by 1924 the membership had surged to well over 100,000 young men and Frank Land was known as "Dad" to all of them.

http://www.scjdemolay.org/ritual/landtalk.html (1 of 2) [7/23/2000 2:09:07 PM] The Dad Land Talk Since that time DeMolay has prospered and fallen, and prospered again. All of our Advisors are known as Dad's just as Frank Land was and all of them try to live up to his commitment to our Order. Dad Land spent his entire life in service to DeMolay; he gave tirelessly of his time and energy because he believed in the order that he insisted was not created by him, but by nine young men.

One story about Frank Land that sticks in my mind, is how when the members of the mother Chapter travelled to New York City to institute a new Chapter. Frank Land gave them the run of the town telling them that they must be back in their hotel by 11:00pm. When they weren't back by midnight, he gathered up the other advisors to go look for them. Frank Land claimed that it was perhaps the saddest moment of his life when he saw a "Black Maria," a paddy wagon of the New York police go by on the road filled with each and every one of his DeMolay. His heart sank to think that these boys who he had spent so much time with, whom he had taken so much pride in could be in such trouble with the law that they had to be taken to jail in a Paddy Wagon. Then the Black Maria came around the corner and pulled up beside the startled advisors, 22 sets of arms stuck out of the bars to wave as 22 voices cried out "Hi Dad." The police then offered to give Dad Land and the other advisors the same tour of the City as they had offered the DeMolays.

When he passed away on Nov. 8th 1959, his final words were "It is the beginning". Dad Land was a deeply spiritual man and his final words expressed his hope of the hereafter, however I would like to think that he was also thinking of DeMolay when he uttered them. It is up to each of us, to carry on him to strive to make DeMolay a better organisation, to help it grow to make it something that we and Dad Land could take pride in. Because Brethren, "it is the beginning."

FATHER TALK (Speaker goes to apex of the candles and stands in front of the fourth candle, facing West)

The Order of DeMolay honors womanhood as one of its seven cardinal virtues. And we realize our more important duty to honor motherhood; but we as young men also need to recognize the other portion of Filial Love that shapes our growing years: Fatherhood. Tonight, my Brothers, we dedicate this evening to our fathers; men who desire to guide and mold their sons to emulate or better their manhood years. A son, to rear a son; that is one of the splendid things of life. A son is as good as an absolute assurance of immortality. To take your son by the hand when he is young, to lead him out into the spring, to show him the glories of God, the way he will go. Well, you should know how it is. A father wants to leave the best part of himself to someone else, his son. And we as sons may be aware of our father's desires to do so, or may seldom even appreciate the task that he tries to accomplish. We, growing up in a confused world as an adolescent, find it unusually difficult to really communicate with our dad. He does not seem to understand us, our beliefs, our speech, our behavior, our wants. We think he and perhaps his beliefs are wrong, or he is unable to help us with our big problems. But later, we as grown men, will eventually see his side of the story and face the problems in raising our own sons, even though it is hard to believe now. It is the Order of DeMolay that enables us to grow up to be better men, better citizens for tomorrow's world. Our Chapter dads also try to aid us if we think our fathers unable to do so. Or perhaps we lost a father and then look to an advisor as a father substitute. Such as the founder of our Order when Dad Land saw fatherless Louis Lower groping for an adult guiding hand. DeMolay, based on such a foundation, has given three and a half million young men a helping and guiding hand along the path. We, therefore, wish to extend to our fathers and Chapter dads the most heartiest token of our appreciation as sons and as DeMolays'. Father, help us further to be good men. Father, light our way the best you possibly can

For when we reach the ripening years of manhood

Teach us to live in the spirit of the universal Brotherhood.

My Brothers, when you go home tonight, you should give due thanks and tribute to your father. Flowers are inappropriate token material; but walk up to him tonight, smile and grip his hand firmly, saying: "Thank you, dad, for all you have given me so far. May I, with the help of the lessons of DeMolay, grow up to be worthy of your name." DeMolay asks you to do this small favor as an appreciation of your fathers and of the manhood you hope you will come to inherit.

http://www.scjdemolay.org/ritual/fathertalk.html [7/23/2000 2:09:08 PM] The Flower Talk

The Flower Talk My brothers, you have just been permitted to take upon yourselves the name of one of the world's most heroic knightly figures. Now you can say, "I am a DeMolay." To be deemed worthy of the privilege of entering into the comradeship of that great army of youth both here and abroad who have dedicated themselves to the ideals of Jacques DeMolay, demonstrates our confidence that the fineness of your purposes will guide your development into the highest type of manhood. To be accepted as a DeMolay is, therefore, an honor of which any young man can be justly proud.

In being received into our ranks, you have been instructed in the seven cardinal virtues of this great Order. We hope you have been deeply impressed with the lessons they teach. There is no better foundation on which to build your character and future life than the practice of these virtues. The Order teaches many beautiful lessons, but none is more important than honor and true respect for womanhood, and more especially for motherhood. It is fitting, therefore, that you have been called upon to stand again before this altar in a few moments of special emphasis upon the virtue which has been given first place among the jewels adorning the Crown of Youth: Filial Love.

For my purpose now, this altar is dedicated to our mothers, whose love never fails. You may rise to positions of great influence in commercial, political, or professional life, but you can never reach the heights of your mother's secret hopes for you. You may sink into the lowest depths of infamy and degradation, but never below the reach of her love. The memory of it will always stir your heart. There is no man so entirely base, so completely vile, so utterly low, that he does not hold in his heart a shrine sacred and apart for the memory of his mother's love. Were I to draw you a picture of love divine, it would not be that of

A stately Angel,

With a form that is full of grace.

But a tired and toilworn mother

With a grave and tender face.

It was your mother who loved you before you were born--who carried you for long months close to her heart and in the fullness of time took God's hand in hers and passed through the valley of shadows to give you life. It was she who cared for you during the helpless years of infancy and the scarcely less dependent years of childhood. As you have grown less dependent, she has done the countless, thoughtful, trouble-healing, helpful and encouraging things which somehow only mothers seem to know how to do. You may have

http://www.scjdemolay.org/ritual/flowertalk.html (1 of 4) [7/23/2000 2:09:10 PM] The Flower Talk accepted these attentions more or less as matters of course, and perhaps without conscious gratitude or any expression of your appreciation. You are rapidly approaching the time in life when you will be entirely independent of your mother. The ties with which dependency has bound you to her may be severed as you grow older, but the tie of mother-love can never be broken.

Thinking back upon the years of your life when you have reached the threshold of manhood, your mother might well say in the words of the poet: My body fed your body, son,

But birth's a swift thing

Compared to one and twenty years

Of feeding you with spirit's tears.

I could not make your mind and soul,

But my glad hands have kept you whole.

Your groping hands

Bound me to life with ruthless bands. And all my living became a prayer,

While all my days built up a stair

For your young feet that trod behind

That you an aspiring way should find.

Think you that life can give you pain

Which does not stab in me again?

Think you that life can give you shame

Which does not make my pride go lame?

And you can do no evil thing

Which sears not me with poisoned sting.

Because of all that I have done,

Remember me in life, O son.

Keep that proud body fine and fair.

My life is monumented there.

For my life make no woman weep,

For my life hold no woman cheap.

http://www.scjdemolay.org/ritual/flowertalk.html (2 of 4) [7/23/2000 2:09:10 PM] The Flower Talk

And see you give no woman scorn

For that dark night when you were born.

These flowers which you see on our altar are symbols of that mother-love. The white, the love of the mother who is gone. And the red, the mother who still lives to bless your life. Far in the dim recesses of her heart

Where all is hushed and still,

She keeps a shrine.

'Tis here she kneels in prayer

While from above long shafts of light upon her shine.

Her heart is flower fragrant as she prays.

Aquiver like a candle flame,

Each prayer takes wing

To bless the world she works among,

To leave the radiance of the candles there.

We want each of you to take a flower from the altar. If your mother has passed over to the other shore, you will choose a white flower and keep it always sacred to her memory. May the sight of it always quicken every tender memory of her and strengthen you anew in your efforts to be worthy of her hopes and aspirations for you. If your mother is living, you will choose a red flower. When you go home tonight, give it to your mother. Tell her it is our recognition of God's best gift to a man: his mother's love. Take her in your arms and say, "Mother, I've learned a great lesson tonight. The ceremonies have helped me realize more fully how much you really mean to me. I'm going to try to show you daily how much I appreciate the sacrifices you have made and the love and care you give me."

Someday you'll find that flower, I know not where, perhaps in her Bible or prayer book or some other sacred place, a silent witness to what this night has meant to the one whose love for you, her son, is beyond the comprehension of any son. My brothers, each of you will please take a red or white flower from the altar. (Done.)

DeMolay can ask no more of you than that you shall endeavor so to live as to be worthy of your mother's love.

http://www.scjdemolay.org/ritual/flowertalk.html (4 of 4) [7/23/2000 2:09:10 PM] Majority Service

Majority Service MC- Brethren, some of our number have reached the years of manhood and now cease to be active members of our Order. It is fitting and proper that we give due consideration to this fact and bid them a formal and fraternal farewell as active DeMolays. Will all who are qualified please rise?

MC- Brother Marshall, you will conduct the brothers to the East.

MC- My brothers, as you have attained the age of 21 years, it becomes our solemn duty to bid you farewell as active members of the Order of DeMolay and it is our privilege to congratulate you on having crossed the threshold which ushers you into the broader life of manhood. The years have set up a boundary line between you and active membership in our Order. They may widen that line into a gap, the gap into a chasm, and the chasm into a great gulf. But across them all, your zeal for DeMolay, the memory of your active membership, and your continuing interest in its behalf will build a bridge which will span the broadest and deepest abyss the years can carve. Only you yourself can destroy that sacred means of communication and we believe and pray that you will maintain your enthusiasm for our Order throughout the broader life upon which you have now entered. The ancient world held no higher civic honor than Roman citizenship. When the Roman youth attained his majority, he laid aside the tunic for the toga virilis, the emblem of life's new dignities, duties and responsibilities. To you has come our country's noblest honor, that of being a citizen. You have symbolically laid aside the garb of youth for the toga of citizenship. Across the threshold of manhood you have passed as it were in one brief but tremendous moment. It is to bid you farewell at the door of this larger life, to wish you Godspeed in the new journey you have begun, to urge you to maintain your affection for our Order and to welcome you on frequent visits to the Chapter around which so many happy associations cling that we have summoned you again to the East, symbolic of the youth you have left behind. It is no longer proper for us to admonish, instruct or direct. We can only remind and request. I therefore ask you to permit yourselves to be conducted to the South, symbolic of the noon of life and the manhood years you have attained.

JC- My brothers, on the symbolic journey of our ceremonies you have often heard inculcated the cardinal teachings or our Order. To this station your eyes have been directed as toward a goal worth all your striving. That goal you have now reached.

It is not for me, as the incumbent of the office that is emblematic of the meridian years of life, to urge you to continued loyalty to the teachings and the practices which are designed to fit youth for useful and honorable citizenship. I may, however, with propriety suggest that there is no invisible line at which you are justified in disregarding the lessons taught you in your Chapter. The virtues which adorn youth honor manhood even more. The true spirit of

http://www.scjdemolay.org/ritual/majority.html (1 of 3) [7/23/2000 2:09:12 PM] Majority Service a DeMolay will make a man or boy loyal and loving to his parents while they live, and loyal and loving to their memory when they have passed away. He will revere sacred things and weave into the fabric of his manhood the essentials of his religious faith. He will love the flag of his country and hold it high above all other banners of the earth, fighting for it if need be, defending its honor in battle or on the field of good citizenship, where the victories of peace are won. He will be loyal to the widened circle of his friendship. He will be faithful to all the broadened responsibilities and the new pledges he has assumed. He will be courteous and kindly and considerate because the Crown of Manhood holds no jewel that can replace true refinement. The step of greeting, the sign of welcome, the token of brotherhood will be the instinctive gestures of his life and always in his heart will abide reverence for the heroic fidelity of the great exemplar of our Order.

You know best of all whether as a DeMolay your achievements have measured up to your promise. You know best where and why you fell short of accomplishment as fallible humanity must fail at times. But I take pleasure in testifying that ant he eyes of your brethren you have been loyal DeMolays, worthy wearers of the Crown of Youth, which you have now exchanged for the Crown of Manhood. We rejoice if we have helped to prepare you for the solemn tasks upon which you now enter. We glory in the hope that the companionship of the Order has strengthened you in hours of weakness, cheered you in times of loneliness, perhaps saved you in moments of temptation. As the Master Councilor has suggested, it would be presumptuous for us now to remind you of the pledges you have made in the past. We ask none of you now. Your future is in your own hands. We can only accompany you to the threshold which we ourselves shall soon reach in turn. We can only remind you that what you promised yesterday is the task of today; that pledges have become duties and obligations opportunities. The hand of welcome will be extended more eagerly than the hand of farewell whenever you revisit the scenes in which you have borne so pleasant a part in the past. Brother Marshal, you will escort our brothers to the West.

SC- My brothers, at this station, emblematic of the eve of life, you have heard inculcated many times the great truth that the wisest young man is he who looks well to the ending of the journey as well as to its beginning. You have reached the zenith years which point backward to what you have done and forward to what remains to be achieved. Half your years are behind you and half before. We can only repeat the hope that when you reach the evening of your lives you may be able to look back upon a long and happy journey, filled with memories of duties well performed, the western sky glowing with the promise of the everlasting morning. We ask you to turn your eyes again to the wonderful opportunities and the golden tasks of the afternoon that are now before you. Among those opportunities is the happy privilege of knowing that the doors have not closed upon you and that you will always be a welcome visitor. Brother Marshal, you will cause our brothers to face the altar.

Help these brothers to be true and faithful men as they have been true and faithful DeMolays. Help them to realize that the teachings of our Order are fundamental truths that know no dividing line of years and that the true spirit of a good DeMolay will make each one a better man. Wilt thou help us reconsecrate ourselves to the great purposes of our Order that when we, like our brothers, reach the noon of life, we may be better fitted for all its tasks. The Shield Talk My Brothers, I stand before you at this sacred DeMolay altar so that I may explain to you the symbolism of the beautiful insignia of our Order.

The INSIGNIA was designed by the founder of our great Order: Dad Frank S. Land. He designed it as a pin and symbol that recognizes us as DeMolays and their representatives. Every part of this insignia has a particular significance, and we as DeMolays should know them by heart.

The CROWN is symbolic of the Crown of Youth and constantly reminds a DeMolay of his obligations and the seven precepts of this Order: filial love, reverence for sacred things, courtesy, comradeship, fidelity, cleanness and patriotism.

The TEN PRECIOUS STONES of the crown honor our founderr, Frank S. Land, and the nine youths whose ties of friendship drew them together in the formation of the Order of DeMolay. The Red Rubies honor those who have passed away. The pearls represent those living members of the original nine. When, as comes to every man, the final summons for each of this honored group, a red ruby takes the place of a pearl.

The HELMET is emblematic of chivalry which we as DeMolays display through our courtesy and respect for womanhood and without which there can be no fineness of character.

The CRESCENT is a sign of secrecy and constantly reminds DeMolays of their duty never to reveal the secrets of our Order or to betray the confidence of a friend.

The five-armed WHITE CROSS symbolizes the purity of your intentions to always remember the motto of the Order: No DeMolay shall fail as a citizen, as a leader and as a man.

The CROSSED SWORDS denote justice, fortitude and mercy. They symbolize the increasing warfare of DeMolay against arrogance, despotism and intolerance.

The STARS surrounding the crescent are symbolic of hope and should always remind us of those obligations and duties which one Brother of the Order owes to another.

Be sure to wear this insignia proudly, whether it be on a pin or on a crest. Don't wear it to any place where you would be ashamed to take your mother, sister or "best girl". Remember, in all humility, when you wear this emblem, you are representing and speaking for over four million other DeMolays scattered throughout the world and who cannot, for the moment, speak for themselves.

DeMolay is dedicated to providing a safe environment in an organization for young men who govern and direct their own activities under the "advisorship" of adults. The organization develops leadership skills and character building in the young men who work within the organization. It helps members to develop civic awareness and responsibility. Leadership Opportunities DeMolay provides young men the opportunity to practice leadership techniques and the real world application of the same through its chapter activities. The organization assists young men in growing into responsible adults with good moral character while providing them a place to go, have fun, companionship, be accepted by peers and develop solid values. DeMolay is not only teaching young people about the working tools of life, it is serving as the cornerstone of our next generation.

http://www.scjdemolay.org/info/what.htm [7/23/2000 2:09:21 PM] Biography of Frank S. Land

Biography of Frank S. Land The Order of DeMolay was founded in 1919, in Kansas City, Missouri, by a young man named Frank S. Land. Land was a community leader who, at the age of 28, already had a successful business career as a restaurateur behind him.

The main event that lead to the founding of the DeMolay movement was World War I. This was a time when the nation was caught up with a passion and desire to bring democracy to the world. When the United States joined in the fight against German power, every resource of men and materials was poured into the war effort. America suffered not only the loss of its men who had fallen in battle, but on the homefront as well. A positive response to this critical situation came about with the development of many charitable organizations. Frank S. Land was selected to act as the director of the Masonic Relief and Employment Bureau of the Scottish Rite of . This charity would come to help hundreds and hundreds of families.

Near the end of the war, Land became concerned with the problems of boys who had lost their fathers. He thought "how lonely it must be for a boy not to have a man to talk with, or a man to provide some type of inspiration and direction." Frank decided there was a need for an organization where boys would have the opportunity to associate with other boys, a place they could share common interests, learn responsibility and other skills that would benefit them throughout their lives. His ideal model for this organization included having business or professional men, Masons, taking interest in the young people, being a friend to them, advising them, and perhaps even providing them with employment opportunities.

In March, 1919, Land met with young Louis Lower. Louis' father had died, leaving the young man without a father figure in his life. Land took the time to listen to Louis, learn about his dreams, and to help him. He learned that others, like Louis, sought companionship, leadership, inspiration and competition. He asked Louis to invite some friends to a meeting, the original group of nine DeMolays: Louis G. Lower, Ivan M. Bentley, Edmund Marshall, Gorman A. McBride, Jerome Jacobson, William W. Steinhilber, Elmer Dorsey, Clyde C. Stream, and Ralph Sewell. At the second meeting, there was a total of 31 young men present. They were excited about their new club!

The group needed its own identity and its own name. After Dad Land related the story of Jacques DeMolay, the group decided to name itself for this historical figure connected with Masonry.

Dad Land, as he came to be called, provided the philosophy and principles to be embodied. As interest in DeMolay spread, Land answered many requests for

http://www.scjdemolay.org/info/bio.htm (1 of 2) [7/23/2000 2:09:24 PM] Biography of Frank S. Land information and authority to start chapters. Initiations and ceremonies took place in all locations. By the fall of 1920, Mother Chapter had developed activities for its members as well. These included an outstanding baseball team, a DeMolay marching unit, and even a 100-piece band!

By the end of 1921, Dad Land realized he had to devote full time to this new organization and become a full time DeMolay employee. As DeMolay chapters grew in numbers and strength, the organization as a whole grew in prestige. With this greater prestige, interest developed in the Masonic fraternity. Official recognition and approval by Masonic groups began giving their seal of approval to foster DeMolay in their states. Many distinguished organizations endorsed DeMolay including the General Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons, Grand Lodges, Knights Templar, etc.

A devoted champion of Freemasonry and of its teachings, Land would become a figure of international prominence within Masonry, eventually becoming Imperial Potentate of the Shrine of North America. He counted among his friends U.S. Congressmen, state governors, movie and radio stars, military leaders, leaders of industry, Presidents of the U.S. and a veritable legion of young men in their teens.

Dad Land worked tirelessly for the Order of DeMolay until his death on , 1959. Hundreds of other devoted workers aided in the creation and extension of the Order of DeMolay, but looked to one man for guidance. Frank S. Land was the charismatic leader of the Order. Frank S. Land was truly a great man, a proud American, and a person who came to be known by millions, simply as "Dad". Frank Land's life touched, and continues to impact generation after generation of young people, young men looking to better themselves by emulating the lessons and examples by which he himself lived.

Frank A. Marshall Author Of The DeMolay Ritual An interesting Story in the Author's Own Words (Reprinted from St. Louis Masonic Journal, 1928)

The beautiful ritual of DeMolay was written by Brother Frank A.Marshall of Kansas City, Missouri and the circumstances surrounding the writing of this marvelous work are very interesting, especially to those who have seen the exemplification of the Ritual.

Brother Marshall is one of those energetic, loyal and sincere members of the Fraternity, whom it is a pleasure to meet. He has been active in and received all of the official honors of both the York and Scottish Rite Bodies.

Brother Marshall and his wife are frequent visitors in St. Louis, spending time while here with their daughter, Mrs. Mamie Ocker, High Priest of Sprig of Acacia Conclave, U.D., True Kindred, wife of Wor. Bro. Erwin L. Ocker, W.M. of Magnolia Lodge No. 626.

The following history of the Ritual of DeMolay is in Brother Marshall's own words:

"I have often been asked, 'How did you happen to write the DeMolay ritual? The bare facts can be briefly stated. I wrote it because Frank S. Land asked me to do so and because Almighty God, whom I have thanked in my heart a thousand times, gave me the impulse to respond to the opportunity which the request involved."

"But behind the bare facts, there are others which might be of interest to the tens of thousands of DeMolays to whom my name means something less than nothing, and the Order and its ritual means everything."

"I knew Brother Land when -- that is to say he was an earnest and devoted member of Ivanhoe Lodge No. 446 A.F. & A.M. of Kansas City, Junior Deacon in the line and the proprietor of a business far removed from either Masonic or DeMolay activities. I prized his friendship which was cemented by the associations formed when I did considerable ritualistic work in Ivanhoe."

"Soon after becoming acquainted with Brother Land, he gave up his private business to become secretary of the Scottish Rite employment and relief association. Our personal relations became close through association in the official line of DeMolai Council, Knights Kadosh in the Scottish Rite bodies of the Valley of Kansas City."

http://www.scjdemolay.org/info/author.htm (1 of 3) [7/23/2000 2:09:39 PM] Frank A. Marshall Author of the DeMolay Ritual DeMolay His Hero:

"Let me say parenthetically that many years before I became a Freemason, Jacques DeMolay was one of my heroes. Forty years ago and more, I wrote a little private 'creed' in which I gave DeMolay a high place as an exemplar of loyalty to conscience."

"When, therefore, I became a member of DeMolai Council (it will be noted in passing that the name of the Consistory Body is spelled with an 'i' instead of 'y'), DeMolay appealed especially to my imagination. As a member of the line, while Brother Land was a commander, I became more and more closely drawn to DeMolay, perhaps unconsciously preparing for the work that was to come."

"Early in the summer of 1919, Brother Land invited me to write a ritual for the little club of boys whom he had drawn about him in the course of his work, which frequently brought him into contact with homes where the need of an uplifting influence was sharply defined. He explained in a general way, as well as in some detail, just what he had in mind and impressed upon me the dramatic instinct of the boy's nature which craved expression through a ritual. As I have previously suggested, I have thanked God a thousand times that Brother Land should have honored me with the invitation, but especially that He put it into my heart to feel the need and to try to meet it to the best of my ability. In a way, I was the logical selection for such a task, from Brother Land's standpoint, for I was one of the few newspaper men in the Scottish Rite bodies, though by no means the only writer. However, whatever the fitness of the situation, I was invited, accepted and wrote a ritual which none of us ever dreamed would be one of the rallying points for an army hundreds of American boys and lads in other lands."

"I had no sons of my own, though my home had been blessed with two dear girls. I had dreamed Ingersoll's beautiful dream of 'daughter's babes upon my knee,' and this wonderful dream has been beautifully realized as the years have gone by. I have two grandsons whom I pray I will live to see DeMolays."

Drafting the Ritual:

"I have had many sweet moments in my life, but one of the greatest joys I have ever experienced was vouchsafed me when I read my first draft of the Opening and Closing and the Initiatory and DeMolay Degrees to Brother Land. The very spot where I read it has a sanctity for me. Brother Land sat at the secretary's desk in the auditorium of the Scottish Rite Temple at Fifteenth Street and Troost Avenue in Kansas City, and I sat on the step."

"It seemed to me that I could see the great vision which was to become a reality forming in Brother Land's mind as I unfolded the ritual to him as far as it had progressed. His remarkable genius for executive detail later enabled him to develop the floorwork and the splendid boys who exemplified the ritual breathed into it the breath of life which made my first witnessing of the degree work another of the landmarks in my life."

"The auditorium of the Scottish Rite in Kansas City will always be a shrine to me. It was here I took the vows of the Rite; at its altar I received a ring presented to me by the boys of the Mother Chapter and which is one of my most treasured possessions. At the altar, I saw for the first time, splendid young fellows take the vows of DeMolay and the Ritual was unfolded in a manner which was a prophecy of the future growth of which none of us really dreamed at first."

http://www.scjdemolay.org/info/author.htm (2 of 3) [7/23/2000 2:09:39 PM] Frank A. Marshall Author of the DeMolay Ritual "Perhaps my greatest task in the beginning was to avoid Masonic phraseology, for in the pioneer days the fear of copying Masonry was a very real one and there was a very definite opposition to anything that suggested any connection with Masonry or that DeMolay should appear as a preparation for future Masons."

The Crown of Youth:

"I confess that for weeks nothing outstanding came to me until the little inspiration of the Crown of Youth furnished the keys to the Initiatory Degree. From that time on, the ritual virtually wrote itself. The East as in the morning of life; the South as the station of manhood and the West with its solemn lessons were fairly obvious."

"I purposely wrote the DeMolay degree in a key very different from the didactics of the Initiatory Degree. I tried to make it appeal to the dramatic instinct inherent in all boys and to make it avoid any monotony when compared with the Initiatory Degree."

"From time to time, Brother Land suggested verbal changes and interpolations in the foundation sections of the ritual. He later called for a memorial service, which is my personal favorite. He called for an Institution Service for starting new chapters and then requested a Majority Service to bid farewell to DeMolays who became of age. Still later, he asked for a Funeral Service, apart from the Memorial and last of all for the Legion of Honor degree. To all of these demands, I responded with all I had in me, and such as it is, the ritual of DeMolay is my most reverent contribution to the welfare of the community, state and nation."

"My modest little home at 4506 Jefferson Street and especially the pine and great hedge trees in the front yard are sacred places to me because in my home and under those trees, the DeMolay ritual was forged on the anvil of my heart and soul during the summer months of 1919, as I found time from the exacting daily duties of my profession."

"Originally, I called the units 'Councils', instead of 'chapters,' but as I was a member of DeMolai Council, it was most logical to call the principal officers 'Councilors': symbolizing the advisory functions of leadership."

"Perhaps if we had dreamed of the future proportions of the Order of DeMolay, I would have been appalled at the task I undertook. However, I did what I could. I tried to plant a little acorn which I hoped might grow into a tree beneath which a few hundred or a few thousand boys would find the helpful shade of an inspiration to a better life. That it has grown into a great forest of shade is the great joy of my life and of Brother Land's and all others associated with the movement in early and later days."

"I have also thanked Almighty God a thousand times that he brought to the aid of DeMolay in its beginning days, the great brain -- the great heart and soul and the wonderful influence of the late illustrious Brother Alexander G. Cochran of St. Louis, Sovereign Grand Inspector General of the Scottish Rite for Missouri and Grand Master Councilor of the Order of DeMolay."

"At a time when even indifference in high quarters, for any reason, would have meant oblivion for DeMolay, he was fired by the vision of Brother Land and his kind words of commendation for my own efforts have been among the most precious memories of my association with the Order."

"As it occurs to me in this random and rambling fashion, the foregoing is the answer to the question, "How did you happen to write the DeMolay Ritual?" http://www.scjdemolay.org/info/author.htm (3 of 3) [7/23/2000 2:09:39 PM] One Hundred DeMolays

One Hundred DeMolays One Hundred DeMolays Of any 100 young men who join DeMolay, five of those 100 will become Master Councilor of their DeMolay chapters. And at least one of them will later say that he valued that experience above his college degree. Eighty or more of the 100 will go on to complete some form of post high school education.

Many of the 100 will find their vocation through other DeMolay involvement, such as Merit Bar work. DeMolay has produced a good number of men, who after serving as chaplain of their local chapters, went on to become ministers or pastors. Along those same lines, several of the 100 DeMolays will first be introduced to some form of organized religion by attending some church or temple through a chapter function.

Of any 100 young men who become a DeMolay, thirty will drop out in their first year. Perhaps this may be regarded as a failure. But in later life, most of these will remember that they have been in DeMolay and speak well of the program and the lessons it teaches.

Of any 100 DeMolays, only rarely will one ever appear before a juvenile court judge or be in any trouble with the law. In fact, DeMolay produces a great many lawyers. And, although the percentages are not known, many of the 100 will join the military. Each of the 100 will learn something from DeMolay and most all will benefit from their association with the fraternity. Again, the percentages are not known, but a considerable number of the 100 will also go into the Masonic Lodge in later life. Of the 100 who join Masonry, many will serve as a head of one of the Masonic organizations.

A number of the 100 come from single parent families and look to their advisors (Masons) as positive role models. One out of the 100 will be awarded the rank and honor of Chevalier, the highest honor granted to an active DeMolay. Approximately sixteen of the

Although only one out of every 1,000 young men in the United States, age 13 to 21, will join DeMolay, it is interesting to note that many of this nation's leaders in business, religion, and politics belonged to DeMolay in their teens. In fact, one out of every twelve State Governors is a Senior DeMolay and one out of every ten United States Senators is a Senior DeMolay.

One hundred DeMolays ... equals a high number of leaders.

The DeMolay Stained Glass Window Dad Frank S. Land passed away on November 8, 1959 and was buried with honored ceremonies at Mt. Moriah Cemetery.

On the night of the funeral, Active Members of the International Supreme Council who attended the services, met and discussed the future of DeMolay. At this meeting, H. Malvern Marks, Past Grand Master and then Executive Officer in Texas, suggested thinking about a memorial for Dad Land. They were to bring their recommendations to the next Executive Committee meeting.

In the fall of 1960, a Memorial Committee was appointed for this purpose. Members included H. Malvern Marks (Chairman), George M. Saunders, Stanley Garrity, Harold Schafer, Chandler Cohagen, Albert McNally, and Dr. Claude F. Long.

This committee recommended that Dad Land's office should remain as he left it, to be forever a shrine to his memory, and his work. They further recommended that the room adjoining his office should be converted into a museum or exhibit room to house his jewels, Masonic regalia, his painting, and the bronze head that was presented at his testimonial dinner.

The International Supreme Council authorized the committee to proceed with their plans. DeMolays also sent in donations for a Dad Land Memorial. The committee knew then that DeMolays all over the world wanted to have a memorial for Dad Land. In November, 1961 the two rooms were completed.

The idea for the stained glass window came from H. Malvern Marks. He had taken it from a drawing that was part of the Members Record Book. This record book was sent to all new members beginning in 1925.

The window was placed in the memorial room so it could be seen from the street. It was also lighted so that it would be visible at night. The window is in beautiful colors and shows a DeMolay young man robed and kneeling at the DeMolay altar, on which is the Crown of Youth, the Bible, and the school books. The bottom of the window reads, "I do so promise and vow..."

When the DeMolay Service & Leadership Center relocated in 1986, a decision was made to move the stained glass window inside. Through the generous donation of Past Grand Master Robert F. Hannon, the window was refurbished and dedicated on March 18, 1988.

The stained glass window is a representation of the most meaningful moment in our organization -- when a young man takes his vows as a DeMolay.

History Of The Order (Nine Boys and a Man) It has been said that a day can be changed or a great moment launched by a single phone call.

Such a call came in January of 1919. As Frank answered the telephone he recognized the voice of Sam Freet, newly installed Senior Warden of Ivanhoe Lodge. "Frank, I have a favor to ask. One of our members, Elmer E. Lower, who had been initiated as a Fellow Craft, died a year ago. Could you find a part-time job for the oldest boy, Louis? He is one of the finest young men I have ever seen.

"Sam, you called at just the right time. I would be glad to talk to this boy. Send Louis to me, say after school tomorrow if you can arrange it. I shall look forward to meeting him."

The next afternoon Louis arrived promptly for his interview. Shaking hands with this youth brought a response to Land that seemed to blend them into a common experience that would unite them for years to come. Louis radiated an honesty of character, a natural aptitude for leadership, and the grace of movement of the athlete. Frank thought, "If I had a son, I would want him to be just like this lad."

They talked for a while about school. Louis told him of his aspirations for a place on the track team, of his position as a pitcher on a baseball team, and in response to a question said, "I am a fairly good student. Even with the hard time we are having, I want to finish high school and then help with the education of the others."

Frank responded, "It is a good goal. You will meet the challenge. Now, tell me about your father. I knew him but only from very casual meetings."

Louis hesitated as though reluctant to look into the past but finally said, "My father was the finest father a boy ever had."

That evening, as Nell Land cleared the dinner dishes, she said, "Frankie, something happened today. You look like you have found a long, lost friend."

"Not a lost friend but a new young friend. This boy I talked to today is tremendous. One of the finest young men I have ever met. He is going to work with me in the office and I know I shall enjoy having him around. Perhaps we could take him to church with us Wednesday evening. The teachings of Christian Science would be good for him and you could meet Louis Lower."

"Yes, we should do just that," she said. "I suggest that you have him bring a few friends over to the apartment some evening. I would like to meet him."

It was not until the middle of February that the opportunity for such a meeting took place. "Louis," said Mr. Land, "who do you run around with?"

"I have some friends in my neighborhood," said Louis.

"How would you like to form a Club and meet here at the Temple?" http://www.scjdemolay.org/info/history.htm (1 of 3) [7/23/2000 2:09:56 PM] History Of The Order ( Nine Boys and a Man)

Louis thought the idea had possibilities and showed up the next week with eight other boys. That was February 19, 1919.

The boys came early that Wednesday evening and each in turn was introduced to Mr. Land by Louis Lower with, "I want you to meet Ralph Sewell, Elmer Dorsey, Edmund Marshall, Jerome Jacobson, William Steinhibler, Ivan Bentley, Gorman McBride, and Clyde Stream. There are nine of us."

They were a group destined to form a great youth organization and each was to advance through his efforts and determination to prominence in his chosen field of work.

Mr. Land acknowledged each introduction with a handshake and word of welcome. "Before we get down to business, let's make a tour of this building. I think you will find it just about right if we should decide to form a Club and use it as a meeting place."

It was a radiant group that gathered about the long table in one of the meeting rooms that night. There was no doubt that they should continue to meet as a Club. The only question was a name. One suggested they use Greek letters as the college fraternities did but this was instantly voted down as making them only a part of other organizations. The name must be distinctive and carry meaning. They turned to Land for suggestions. He pointed to a recent series of prints on the wall that showed the adventures of Sir Galahad and the Knights of the Round Table. There was a negative shaking of heads.

The greatest of wars had ended only a few months before and the adventures of knights of old seemed far away. Then names were mentioned from history and from the Bible. Stories such as Damon and Phythias, David and Jonathan and of Nathan Hale. Nothing seemed to click until one of the boys, Clyde Stream, said "Mr. Land, tell us something connected with Masonry. They must have great names and we are meeting here in one of their buildings."

Frank smiled, "This year I am serving as the head of one of the Masonic Groups. I am the Commander for the DeMolai Council of Kadosh. There are many names and stories directly connected with Masonry, but I think I should tell you about the last leader of the Knights Templar. His name was Jacques DeMolay or as they say in history books, James of Molay."

The story and the name caught the imagination of the boys. Here was heroism. Here was a great example of loyalty, of courage. Here was a theme from knighthood and chivalry, at its best, and the name of a martyr to fidelity and toleration. The boys were ready without further consideration to accept this name as the name of the group. But Land interrupted, "Now let's wait just a little bit and sleep over this. Let's not rush into it. Perhaps with a little more thought we can come up with a better name. One that might be more in keeping and more appropriate. It is growing late and you should all be going home. Come back next week and bring a few more of your friends. We will talk more together about it then. Good night and thanks for coming."

While the boys talked to Land about the Club when they came to the Temple, it was their long talks together at school and as they walked from school to home that heightened their interest and gave momentum to their organization. One afternoon after a chemistry class, Elmer Dorsey caught up with Louis Lower to ask, "Louis, I think this club idea is terrific. But what is it all about? What does Mr. Land get out of it? Do they want us to become junior Masons?" "I don't have all the answers, Elmer, I only know that Frank Land is one of the greatest. His only motive is the one he tells us. He likes to be with young people and sincerely believes that if we do form such a group each of us will benefit from it. How he ever talked the older boys into letting us use their temple is beyond me. They must be

http://www.scjdemolay.org/info/history.htm (2 of 3) [7/23/2000 2:09:56 PM] History Of The Order ( Nine Boys and a Man) interested in us as Land is, because he has told me that we are not to be a junior Masonic group. He told me these men are concerned about only one thing and that is that we should grow into decent men who will be respected in the community."

March 24, 1919 was the day in history that launched the Order of DeMolay. During the next few years, however, the date of March 18, the date in the past that had witnessed the death of Jacques DeMolay, came to be more frequently used.

Thirty-one boys, all from the same high school, came to the Scottish Rite Temple that night. Frank Land made each boy welcome and then explained briefly his ideas of a Club. Land said, "This is your meeting. I will serve as Advisor but it is your meeting. Why not proceed with an organization and elect a few officers. I will take charge until you have completed your election."

During the next few months the group grew in numbers, in activities and interest. Then a fear came to some of them that they were growing into too large a Club.

Someone suggested that a committee talk with Mr. Land and endeavor to convince him that membership should be limited to 75. Land neither criticized or admonished the committee at the time. In fact they didn't know whether he agreed or disagreed to their suggestion.

Later when the meeting was called to order, the chairman reported and moved that the membership of DeMolay be limited to 75. The motion quickly received a second and was unanimously adopted. It was then that Dad Land rose from the back of the room where he had been more or less out of sight for he wasn't the type to take the spotlight, or the forefront in their meetings. He wanted them to conduct their own meetings.

As he came to the front of the room that night, he proceeded to tell them --and in no uncertain terms--how selfish and how inconsiderate they were. He told them that they were operating and thinking absolutely contrary to every idea that he had in mind for this organization. He reminded them that there were three other high schools in Kansas City which had young men who were just as capable, just as qualified, and just as upstanding as they were. In fact, he indicated he thought they were probably much, much better than what they thought they were. He said that if it was good for one boy, it must be good for all eligible boys. He reminded them that 'to become big, they must be big.' The motion to limit membership to 75 was rescinded. It was then that DeMolay was permitted to grow and develop.

And grew it did. DeMolay continued its growth initiating new member and instituting new chapters in all states of the continential USA. DeMolay then crossed the oceans and the organization was developed in many foreign countries. Thousands upon thousands of young men have had their life enriched by the recinding of the motion to limit the Order of DeMolay to just 75 members.

This information was taken from the "HI, DAD!" book--a story about Frank S. Land and the Order of DeMolay authored by Herbert Ewing Duncan. This book can be purchased through the DeMolay & More Store by calling 1-800-DEMOLAY.

Commemorating the Martyr death of , 18th March 1314.

Jacques De Molay, last Grand Master of the Holy Kinghts Templar. At this dark day you died. The Inner Church you protected with great vigil and with discipline, as your predecessors had done before you, fell at the hands of those who were set to serve it , but betrayed it instead. King Phillip, he that were called fair, because he didnt tax those who were taxable, but ruthlessly abused those who were poor, ordered you killed on account of the kinds of rumours that always circle around true servants of the Inner Church. About Jesus the impious said, "look at him, he associates with whores and tax-collectors" and also "what good can come out of Nazareth?". It befalls a Christian to endure such abusive remarks without the thought of revenge, although I know that you swore at the time they strapped you to the pyre , that you would have yours. We will have mercy according to our hearts and the fruits of our hearts - for those ears that would hear I will say that you were chaste and you very vigilant, when others where bound as slaves to desires wild horses and hid beyond every possible lie to escape the scrutiny of the Spirit of Truth. If that does not count, I cannot imagine what will. Two days has past since I prayed in memory of the Cathars, my dear brother, we both know what happened to them, and I find it praiseworthy that you, of all, armed to the teeth, did not partake in that crime against humanity. At our times there are no Knights, there are no chivalry and there are no mission for the Church except that of growing with guile and self-deceit, on behalf of Anti-Christ, our masters enemy. When I look at this world, I cannot see any battle in the open, I see the hidden conflict, to which you among so many others where offered up as a sacrifice, in honour of the Cruel Lord of this World Which is Darkness. Mani crawled and limped through years in prison as you did, when the torturers whose minds are not whole but are sheer evil and the reverbations of the laughter of the devil at last killed you, as they did him, they had let you suffer long and cruel. I thank our good Lord that there is an end to such pain and infliction! Also for you, whose conscience are weighed with lives. So brother, I remember you well, for those good things you added, and the good work you did in guarding untill the alotted time came, the noble tradition to which we both, by means of Spirit, belong to. I do remember and I am thankfull. Lord Our God In Heaven, Christ most blessed Testimony to His Glory, I pray you to keep me as you kept Jacques De Molay. I pray you to guard me as you guarded Jacques De Molay, and him as you keep and guard me. I ask for forgiveness of my trespasses, and at this day I pray for forgiveness for the trespasses of my good brother, Jacques De Molay - I ask that our victory be at hand, and I ask that our progress may be so swift that we will not ourselves become poverty, although it is in poverty we are immersed. For all those vigilant, who has fought and fallen, I have remembrance. As far as the War has gone, since there is no return, be with us, and have mercy. As far as the siege which the Body has against the Whole goes, God, help us pass.
