WE KEEP THE LIGHTS ON WHAT IS Did you know platinum is used to make devices called fuel cells that make and store electricity? CHROME Just one of the many ways Anglo American Platinum makes South Africa a better place to live. • Chromium is the most abundant of the Group 6 of metallic elements (Periodic Table of the Elements), comprising chromium (Cr), molybdenum (Mo), tungsten (W) and seaborgium (Sg). At a concentration of nearly 400 parts per million in the earth’s crust as various minerals, it is the 13th most common element. • Chromium metal is extracted from chromite (chrome ore) deposits of which were created when magma (molten rock) broke through the earth’s crust. The world’s major chromite deposits are in the eastern hemisphere in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kazakhstan, India and Turkey. Significant deposits are in the Western hemisphere in Brazil and Cuba. Did you know? Platinum is the world’s heaviest precious metal. 4 NEWS JANUARY 2017 AMANDELBULT TIMES DID YOU KNOW Chrome is a useful mineral that is used in several ways and about 80% of the world’s chrome reserves are to be found in South Africa. Here are some more interesting facts about the mineral… Chrome is mainly used to manufacture stainless steel.
