If young Mike Meldman had passed his law school admissions test, gone to law school and become a lawyer, would Discovery Land Company have been created? We’ll never know. Because he did “bomb” his LSAT, he didn’t go to law school and he did create Discovery, now widely recognized as the modern gold standard for residential golf-course developments. Meldman, 59, is founder and CEO of Scottsdale, Arizona-based Discovery Land Company, a name that conjures images of the world’s athletic, industrial and social elite enjoying the fruits of their labor in thoughtfully-designed spaces, on golf courses built by the best and in residential estates that melt into the landscape. Yet he got into real estate development purely by chance. After graduating from Stanford in 1981, law school plans scuttled, Meldman began dealing blackjack at Harrah’s Casino in Stateline, Nevada. There, he met Bruce Ashwill, who’d just formed Bishop-Hawk. The rest is history. “[Bruce] asked me if I wanted to make as much money as I wanted and work as little as I wanted, and I said, ‘sure,’” Meldman recalls. “He put me in an area called Fremont, which was all farms. My whole training was, ‘Put up a sign, someone will call.’ It was all commission and I’d go to Tahoe on weekends to deal blackjack just to have some money to live on.” Then Fremont started selling and he said to himself, “Well, that was easy.” Meldman sold Fremont and spearheaded a development in Portola, California, learning to develop in concert with the environment. He turned to residential golf development in 1994, creating Scottsdale’s Estancia with course-designer Tom Fazio. With its natural appearance, dream location, stunning golf course and dramatic residential lots, Estancia was an instant success. “It’s basically Pinnacle Peak mountain, where we dropped a golf course in without a lot of grading, de-veg[etation] or re-veg[etation],” Meldman says. “By the time we opened the course and started assigning real estate, it looked like it had been there forever.”

hanges and improvements are happening so fast, and the event date is approaching so quickly, organizers of the 2019 Desert Classic can’t drive C55. They’re going 100 miles per hour. The Desert Classic was the CareerBuilder Challenge until early November, when CareerBuilder’s new parent company made the decision to pull out of its five-year contract two years early. The company will fund the upcoming event, meaning not much will change for this year’s event other than signage. The purse By Matt McKay is set at $5.9 million, charitable donations to local charities are once again expected to range near $1million and Golf Channel remains the television partner, broadcasting all four rounds. This year’s event is scheduled for January 17-20 at PGA West’s Stadium and Nicklaus Tournament courses, and La Quinta Country Club. With the name CareerBuilder Challenge no longer an option, organizers went back to the past and tapped the tournament’s history, restoring the name it had when it first began in the late 1950s. That’s a nice tie-in to the tournament’s 60th anniversary, which it will celebrate this year. According to the tournament’s director, Pat McCabe with Lagardere Sports, as soon as the announcement was made, the tournament apparatus immediately began 1) the process of securing another title sponsor, and 2) making changes to the visible aspects of the tournament to reflect its new title. He says changes will have to be made to branding elements, some of the signage and the tournament’s website and social media outlets. “And we’ve had to let all of our volunteers, partners and sponsors know what’s up,” he adds. “Other than that, things are just getting a little bit bigger. All three of our public fan venues are back this year, including the Michelob Ultra Beer for Birdies and the Casamigos Club 17, and the Von’s Fan Pavilion is back bigger and better than ever,” McCabe says. “And they’re all available for the $30 ticket; we didn’t raise ticket prices, either.” One aspect of this year’s tournament that will change are the performers for the Friday and Saturday concerts, conducted on the driving range at PGA West. This year’s concerts will have a harder-rocking edge, as the Red Rocker, Sammy Hagar, and his band The Circle will play on Friday night. Saturday night, it’s 70s English Rock giants Bad Company, with original members Paul Rodgers (guitar/vocals) and Simon Kirke (drums). The duo split from the band Free in 1973. “We saw how well Huey Lewis drew last year, and this is certainly maybe a little bit harder rock, but still in that classic rock genre,” McCabe says. “ And I think the community will dig it, the kids and the older folks will enjoy it, so we’re excited.” As for a future sponsor, Lagardere agents have fanned out with the company’s substantial contact list. They’re hoping to secure a long-term sponsor that, first and foremost, believes in the golf product. That sponsor will have to pony up the $8 to $10 million dollars it takes to put the event on, but the potential worldwide exposure, introduction to new business avenues and contacts and an association with the PGA Tour and Coachella Valley could make for a substantial return on its investment. “We’re out tilling the soil right now. Hopefully it won’t take very long to get someone in, we truly believe that,” McCabe says. “We don’t have any specific targets but the bulk of our pro-am players are prominent individuals from corporations from around the world. So it’s at least nice to know that they know this is an opportunity that’s available.” The group is pursuing its list of longtime clients, of course. “But we’re not looking for anyone or anything particular, no region, no exact needs so to speak,” McCabe says. “It’d be hard to get a Palm Springs or a La Quinta company, but it would certainly be nice to have a Southern California company. That would make a lot of sense.” ______Matt McKay is a staff writer with Desert Golf & Tennis

n October 18, Randall Bone, chief executive officer of Sunrise Company, and Nolan Sparks, vice president of T. D. Desert Development Corporation, a Owholly owned subsidiary of the Drummond Company, made a joint statement announcing a change of ownership at Andalusia Country Club. The two clearly have high regard for one another as well as for the quality and core values that define each company. “Drummond Company has high regard for Sunrise, based on its reputation as one of the desert’s finest luxury golf-course community developers,” the announcement states, “and is confident that Sunrise represents the very best steward for Andalusia and will continue to operate the club and community consistent with the original vision of the Drummond family. Sunrise Company’s core values match the Drummonds’ long legacy of excellence in providing the highest quality of amenities, services and homebuilding. Also, like Drummond Company, Sunrise strives to create an environment where employees are nurtured to achieve personal and professional success.” Considering the level of excellence already in play at Andalusia, success seems guaranteed. To start, there’s the stellar Rees Jones-designed golf course, about which Jones himself said, “Every design element at Andalusia has been extremely well conceived. The orientation, rhythm, beauty and the ebb and flow of the golf course I designed is unlike any other layout in the Coachella Valley.” Add to that an amenity rich club, spectacular clubhouse and quality homes, and it’s easy to see why Jones said of Andalusia, “It is stunning and comfortable. It feels like a second home.” Now the community is poised to become even better, building on what already exists. “We specialize in private club and luxury residential development, and acquiring Andalusia allows us the opportunity to have a significant presence in La Quinta again,” Bone says. “It’s exciting to see what is happening in the thriving La Quinta market and to be a part of the continued growth and success of the city. Our vision is to continue to operate the club and community consistent with the original vision the Drummond family had for Andalusia.” Sunrise brings its own history of excellence to the project. “Since its founding in 1963, Sunrise Company has constructed more than 16,000 homes and condominiums, co-developed two resort hotels, a luxury fractional ownership resort and developed 22 resort communities, numerous apartment buildings, office buildings, shopping centers and commercial hotels,” Bone notes. “Sunrise Company’s legacy of success in the Coachella Valley includes Toscana Country Club currently under development in Indian Wells and the completed communities of Indian Ridge Country Club, Palm Valley Country Club, The Lakes Country Club, Monterey Country Club, Rancho Las Palmas Country Club and Sunrise Country Club. Sunrise also co-developed the Desert Springs JW Marriott Resort & Spa, PGA West and Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa.” Play Worthy

We will also evaluate the current trends in home design, with a view to keeping the housing product up to date.” Growth is one aspect of the housing and development side of the community, but always in keeping with what’s right for residents and members—which is how the Drummond Company envisioned Andalusia as well. “Currently 211 homes have been sold and closed,” Bone says. The message for current residents and members is equally ”There will be approximately 520 homes at the completion of the positive and exciting. “ Sunrise Company is privileged to be a part of community. here are a multitude of private golf and residential communities in the Coachella Valley, but The Reserve has Texcelled in creating a haven where the natural desert landscape and the best of human endeavors come together seamlessly. Today, 20 years after it first opened, The Reserve is still the pinnacle of harmony between nature and desert dwellers who want the very best of and for both worlds. Protecting and preserving the natural environment was a mandate from the start and it remains a mission today. Creating a golf course and homes that fit superbly into that natural environment guided the development of the land, and that has not changed, either. “Low density, high livability” continues to be the goal, ensuring that The Reserve remains true to what its original visionaries intended. The intention was for The Reserve to exemplify the near perfect melding of golf-lifestyle amenities and an exquisite, 700-acre expanse of land—and it does. It all starts with the stellar 21-hole golf course, a Tom Weiskopf/Jay Morrish design weaving through tranquil canyons and rock outcroppings, and rising and falling past lakes, streams, and natural flora and fauna of the desert. A challenge and a joy for every level of player, the course offers dramatic views of four mountain ranges, impeccable maintenance and an ease of play where no tee times are necessary. When it comes time for practice, members have access to a 382-yard, double-ended practice range, 18-hole putting course, and, of course, those three regulation length trophy holes for fine-tuning the short game, among other things. At the heart of The Reserve is the Club Village, the center for meeting, gathering, dining, sports, fitness, pampering and taking part in all that the private club has to offer. The Club Village is comprised of the 30,000 sq. ft. main clubhouse, golf shop and fitness center, as well as the Lakehouse, a favorite for casual dining. To commemorate The Reserve’s 20 th Anniversary, the clubhouse is undergoing a $10 million renovation that includes a comprehensive restyling and modernizing of the facility.

GAUGE THE STROKE As I make my stroke, I have an exact length of stroke in mind and I use my stance width to help clarify that length. The length of my backswing will always be to the instep of my right foot, meaning that on short putts I have a narrower stance than on longer putts. ickleball is the fastest growing sport in America. It’s a paddle sport with elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis. Two Por four players use a solid paddle made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball, similar to a Whiffle ball, over a net. Pickle Ball was invented in the mid 1960s as a children’s backyard pastime and named for the founder’s dog, Pickle, who constantly chased the ball. It’s played on a court with the same hard surface as a tennis court but half the size of a full tennis court. Pickleball’s popularity comes largely from the fact that it’s a game all ages and skill levels can enjoy and it’s easy for beginners to learn. It also doesn’t have the same physical impact on the body as tennis. It can be enjoyed as a single or couple’s sport and costs are minimal, primarily a pair of court shoes and a racquet that on average costs about $65. Add to that the fact that it’s played quickly without a lot of time wasted standing around, and while it can be competitive it’s also easily enjoyed in a social setting, such as a golf or tennis club and the communities surrounding them. This year for the first time the USA National Pickleball Championship was played at prestigious Indian Wells Tennis Garden, and it looks likely to be an annual event going forward. All of that makes it no surprise that when realtors in the Coachella Valley are showing country club properties these days, they’re more and more asked if the club also offers pickleball. It has become a priority for many homebuyers. Tennis seems to have taken a backseat to the emerging sport, and in many cases this is a boon for valley clubs. Pickleball is filling empty high-maintenance tennis courts and attracting new members to the clubs at a very low cost. Local country club tennis pros have been forced to play a dual role, learning pickleball quickly so they can teach it. At the same time, they have to continue offering a full-service tennis program. Yet pickleball offers a new social environment for members and it gives clubs another avenue for selling food and beverage, which adds nicely to profits. Andalusia Country Club

Pickleball Across the Valley

Here are just some of the Coachella Valley clubs that currently offer pickleball in a substantial way.

Most important, perhaps, these pickleball events give clubs a chance to showcase their facilities and attract new members.

As a realtor, I see it as a huge opportunity to attract a new generation to the valley to buy homes. Golf is still the primary sport for many of these buyers; however, having the option for pickleball is a big positive. It just might be the edge that attracts a buyer to one club over another in the highly competitive environment of country clubs as well as home sales. ______Jennie Robinson is a 26-year desert resident, top-producing realtor with Bennion and Deville Homes and single-digit golfer.
