Key Facts Ambassadors KEY FACTS - LAUREUS AMBASSADORS • Laureus Ambassadors are a select group of current and retired sportsmen and sportswomen who have achieved sporting greatness, and high profile individuals who, through their life and career, have achieved great things and have become an inspiration, plus non-sporting personalities who are passionate about sport. • New members of the Laureus Ambassadors can only be admitted at the discretion of the Laureus World Sports Academy. • Laureus Ambassadors are encouraged to bring their participation, insight and experience to the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation social action programmes and to play a vital part in their endorsement. • Currently there are 106 members of the Laureus Ambassadors programme. • Laureus Ambassadors raise awareness and participate in various fundraising and awareness activities. • The Ambassadors programme has been established by Laureus to act as goodwill ambassadors and further support the benevolent work and initiatives undertaken by the Laureus World Sports Academy members and the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. • Laureus Ambassadors share a belief in the power of sport to break down In the past, Nike has dealt with a number of celebrity sponsorship scandals where the media has shone a negative light on the brand in response to the actions of its sponsored athletes. These issues include, celebrities such as Lance Armstrong in 2012 after his doping scandal, Tiger Woods after his extramarital affairs, Marion Jones after issues with ‘performance-enhancing drugs’ (Sydney Morning Herald), Justin Gatlin after using testosterone and Michael Vick after being involved in dog-fighting. These scandals have reflected poorly on Nike as a brand, by the athletes they have chosen to represent their brand. In addition to these scandals, Nike is currently facing another celebrity sponsorship scandal involving Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius after being charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp on Tuesday the 14th of February, 2013.

    EUROPEAN TRIATHLON UNION ETU EVENT STATUS: 2001 – 2016 1. INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this document is to provide details about the status of the past and current ETU Events, including strengths and weaknesses. Recommendations will follow each section to provide an opportunity for further discussion with ITU and at the various levels at ETU. ETU main goals on events are: a) Increase the general participation of triathlon and all related multisport in all age-group categories within Europe; b) Provide opportunities for young athletes to access the sport; c) Keep gender balance on all level of competitions; d) Provide a pathway to grow from youth athlete to elite athletes competing at the Olympic Games. 2. GENERAL: A thorough review of the Competition System is required due to: a) the growing number of ITU events in Europe; b) the increased number of participants in all categories; c) the growing demands of Paratriathlon being integrated in the sport; d) the increased number of private international event organising companies wanting to align with our system. 3. ETU TRIATHLON EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS: is the main event of ETU. The event package consist of the following races: elite Olympic Distance Triathlon, the junior Sprint Triathlon event, the Age Group OD and sprint Triathlon, the elite and junior mixed relay, an opening ceremony and the organisation of the ETU Annual General Assembly. ETU is asking to pay an event fee and prize money for both the elite individual event as the elite mixed relay. Having the event live broadcasting is recommended but not mandatory. This means that the LOC has to invest a substantial amount into this organisation.

    The Paralympic Movement and the Olympics in Germany The Paralympic Movement and the Olympics in Germany Gudrun DOLL-TEPPER, Prof.Dr. （Free University Berlin / German Olympic Sports Confederation） Introduction In 2006, the “German Sports Confederation” （Deutscher Sportbund） and the “National Olympic Committee for Germany” （Nationales Olympisches Komitee für Deutschland） merged, and the “German Olympic Sports Confederation”（Deutscher Olympischer Sportbund/DOSB） became the umbrella sport organisation in Germany. In this paper, the main goals of this merging process, some historical developments, as well as current structures and issues will be discussed with a focus on the relations between the DOSB and disability sport organisations, in particular the “German Disability Sport Organisation”（Deutscher Behindertensportverband）, which also serves as the “National Paralympic Committee Germany ” （Nationales Paralympisches Komitee）. Both organisations are working together in a variety of programmes and projects, e.g. in the preparation of bids to host Olympic and Paralympic Games. “Inclusion” has become a keyword for many initiatives in German sports, particularly regarding the implementation of the “UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities”, which entered into force in March 2009. 1. A look back: Sport developments in Germany after World War II After World War II Germany was divided into the “Federal Republic of Germany” （FRG, West Germany） and the “German Democratic Republic” （GDR, East Germany）. As a consequence, this division existed also in the newly established sport 1 Journal of Paralympic Research Group vol.5 organisations（see Deutscher Sportbund 1990）: the “National Olympic Committee for Germany”（NOK für Deutschland） was founded in 1949 and the “NOC for the GDR” followed in 1951.

As a site of global citizenship recognition, the mega-event of the Olympic Games, including the embodied participation of Olympic athletes, offers a rich venue through which we can understand the ways in which host nations, spectators, sponsors, and fans exalt and admonish particular citizenship performances. In this comparative feminist media analysis of the cases of athletes Caster Semenya and Oscar Pistorius, we map the ways in which categories of identity, including race, gender, and class, are mobilized in discussion of these athletes as more-or-less deserving Olympic athlete-citizens. Using discursive media analysis as a methodology, we focus on the framing of each athlete by the anonymous commentary of ordinary fans on a popular international track-and- field website called LetsRun. We suggest that citizenship theorists take seriously how hierarchies of power are enforced along intersectional lines of race, class, and gender, and ultimately contend that the disparate treatment of these athletes, as evidenced in fan commentary, extends and interrogates theories of exalted citizenship on the world stage.
