B30 RESPS Design & Manufacture of Miscellaneous Fabrication Completion of project for Sellafield Legacy Ponds & Silos

Historically B30 Plant was used to temporarily store Magnox fuel elements within a pond area prior to further processing. A pipework system was used to carry either Magnox sludge from skip washing operations or pond purge water containing a small amount of sludge solids. Over time sludge levels within the pipe work system built up and eventually became blocked in the late 1970s.

The legacy of this B30 process pipework is the Redundant Effluent Pipe work System (RESPS) and it is intended that the pipework be isolated and ultimately removed from the building drainage system connection B30 pond to the South Active Drain Trench (SADT). This work will be carried out as part of the Legacy Ponds and Silos Early Retrievals Project (LP&SERP) and will form part of a package of work designed to mitigate the risk of leakage from the pipe work system.

Previous work within the LP&SERP portfolio concerned the use of emergency termination equipment intended for use should a RESPS down comer become ruptured as a result of an initiating event. In order to provide permanent isolations within the down comers and associated weir boxes it may be necessary to enter the pipework system via a previously deployed emergency termination device. An area of sludge within the pipe would then be cleared in preparation for a permanent isolation plug to be deployed. Both hot and cold tapping techniques may also be required to allow sections of pipe work to be entered prior to an initiating event occurring.

A number of techniques and various items of equipment had been developed during the initial trial period of the B30 RESPS project and the purpose of this phase of the project was to develop the equipment such that the work could be carried out on site.

Phase 1 Design & Development The first phase of the project was to develop the existing designs into a practicable working solution that could be easily deployed by site personnel. This was achieved by a close working relationship between all parties. Regular meetings were held at which the buy in of client ensured hat any abortive work was minimised.

Phase 2 Manufacture The manufacture was divided into 2 areas:

1. Machining of Aluminium & Stainless Steel Components. 2. Fabrication of Carbon Steel Assemblies.

Orders were placed with a Gateshead company P.T.S.M. for the machining and the Workington based Tubros Engineering for the fabrication. Each supplier was visited on a regular basis to ensure that the B30 Washbox project was on programme.

Quality Control/Documentation Requirements As part of the quality control and documentation requirements of this project a Life Time Quality Record has been produced this demonstrates full traceability of every area of the project from design to manufacture through to customer acceptance.

The project is now complete and all equipment has been delivered to site for installation.
