Built between 1885 and 1888 in a gothic style, the church was destroyed by air raids in WWII, and rebuilt from 1951 to 1959 in a simplified form. In 1995 a comprehensive renovation was carried out, and the reconstruction provided for both religious and secular use.

This morning we visit the beautiful rococo Charlottenburg Palace and go on a guided tour to discover this once royal summer residence, today Berlin’s largest and most magnificent palace. The park and grounds are now designed as an English-style landscaped park which has highlights such as the mausoleum, the Belvedere tea house and the Neuer Pavillon, a small neo- classical house modelled on a Neapolitan villa. Following our visit, we return to our hotel.

The afternoon and evening are free for further exploration of Berlin.

DAY 5 | FRIDAY 3 JULY 2020 1ST OF 2 NIGHTS IN NEUBRANDENBURG

BERLIN TO NEUBRANDENBURG:

In the late morning we depart Berlin for Neubrandenburg, which is located on the shore of Lake Tollensesee, and is famous for its rich medieval heritage of Brick Gothic especially the world’s best preserved defensive wall of this style, and for the Concert Church, (Marienkirche), home venue of the Neubrandenburg Philharmonic. Neubrandenburg is part of the European Route of Brick Gothic, a route which leads through seven countries along the Baltic Sea coast.

The MYO is in Neubrandenburg as part of the Young Concerts Festival. The MYO has been invited to be a part of the Festival by the Festival’s Artistic Director, Stanley Dodds, a violinist in the Berlin Philharmonic and Principal Conductor of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. During the time the MYO is in Neubrandenburg they will have individual and joint rehearsals as well as two joint concerts with the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Youth Orchestra. We will attend each of the joint concerts.

On arrival in Neubrandenburg we check into a 3-star hotel.

The afternoon and evening are free, which gives you the opportunity to discover some of Neubrandenburg’s most fascinating features. The city has preserved its medieval city wall in its entirety. The wall, 7 metres high and with a perimeter of 2.3 km has four Brick Gothic city gates, dating back to the 14th and 15th-centuries. The walk around the walls is on flat, accessible paths suitable for any fitness level.

You might also enjoy visiting the tallest high rise in the city, the 56m Haus der Kultur and Bildung (HKB, House of Culture & Education). Its slender appearance has earned it the nickname Kulturfinger (“culture finger”).

DAY 6 | SATURDAY 4 JULY 2020 2ND OF 2 NIGHTS IN NEUBRANDENBURG

DAY TRIP TO RHEINSBERG PALACE AND NEUBRANDENBURG:

This morning we travel by luxury coach to Rheinsberg Palace, where we enjoy a guided tour. Between 1736 and 1740 Rheinsberg Palace, which is attractively situated on the banks of Lake Grienericksee, was the residence of Frederick the Great, who later said he spent the happiest years of his life here. The palace provided the setting for one of the love stories of Kurt Tucholsky, a German-Jewish journalist, satirist, and writer, after whom a museum on the site has been named. Visiting the palace transports one back to the 18th-century, as a result of the restoration work, art and period furnishings. Time is allowed to enjoy the beautiful grounds. Following our visit we enjoy lunch together and then return to Neubrandenburg.

This evening we will attend the MYO and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Youth Orchestra’s joint concert in Konzertkirche Neubrandenburg (also called Marienkirche).

The Brandenburg Gate, Berlin. An aerial view of Berlin. Berlin Cathedral on the River Spree. Marienkirche, an example of brick gothic, was badly damaged in the 17th and 18th centuries, and was then repaired and rebuilt from 1832 to 1841. In the final days of World War II, it was again seriously damaged. The town of Neubrandenburg decided to convert the ruined church into a concert hall, and restored and renovated it in the 1980s and 1990s. A European architectural competition was arranged in 1996. The implemented plan is based on the winning proposal of Finnish architect Pekka Salminen. It then was rededicated as the Konzertkirche (Concert Church).

DAY 7 | SUNDAY 5 JULY 2020 1ST OF 2 NIGHTS AT THE IRON GATE HOTEL & SUITES, PRAGUE

NEUBRANDENBURG TO PRAGUE:

Following the concert, we travel by private coach to Prague.

On arrival into Prague we check into our hotel, the Iron Gate Hotel & Suites. The hotel is set in a UNESCO-protected building dating back to the year 1400. It is located in a private inner courtyard, but is centrally situated, so that a few minutes’ walk down a picturesque cobbled side street leads to the famous Old Town Square. It is close to many shops and restaurants.

DAY 8 | MONDAY 6 JULY 2020 2ND OF 2 NIGHTS AT THE IRON GATE HOTEL & SUITES, PRAGUE

The workshop will take place in the Dvorak Hall at the Rudolfinum, one of the oldest concert halls in Europe and noted for its excellent acoustics.

The afternoon is free and you might like to visit Prague’s Old Town Square. Dating from the 12th-century it is one of the most beautiful and historic sites in Europe with its ancient buildings, the Gothic Tyn Cathedral, the Baroque St. Nicholas Church and the 80 metre high Prague Orloj, a medieval astrological clock located on the Old Town Hall. First installed in 1410, the clock is the third-oldest astronomical clock in the world and the oldest one still in operation. There are statues of heroes and martyrs in the square. There are also entertainers, and shops and stalls selling local food and wares.

Or you could visit Mozarthaus Vienna, Mozart’s residence from 1784 to 1787 or Café Sacher, a popular meeting place in the centre of Vienna where you can sample a typical Viennese coffee-house atmosphere and treat yourself to a slice of the legendary Original Sacher-Torte.

In the evening we attend the MYO’s concert in spectacular St Stephen’s Cathedral, Vienna’s most famous landmark. There has been a church of St Stephen in the heart of Vienna since 1147, which has been constantly redesigned and extended. There was no significant damage to the church for more than 800 years until the last 2 weeks of World War II when the cathedral was badly burned. Nonetheless, due to the love of the citizens it was rebuilt and ceremoniously reopened after 7 years, and as a result it is also a symbol for the reconstruction of Austria after the 2nd World War.
