Matthews had an impressive season for a San Diego squad that finished tied for second in the PFL (6-2) while compiling an 9-2 overall mark. He finished the regular-season first among all Division I FCS players in total receptions (102), total receiving yards (1,478), touch- down receptions (21), receptions per game (9.27) and reception yardage per game (134.36). He had nine games of more than 100 yards receiving and five games with 10 or more receptions. DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR Scoot Vossler (DAY) Senior Defensive Lineman St. Marys, Ohio Vossler led a Dayton squad that also finished second in the PFL (6-2) while posting a 9-3 overall record. He finished 10th among all PFL tacklers with 6.3 tackles per game, posting 76 tackles in 12 contests. Vossler also was ranked second in sacks and tackles for loss, aver- aging 0.71 sacks and .21 tackles for loss per game. He also forced a league best three fumbles and recovered another three. Behind his performance, Dayton led the league in scoring defense and total defense. FRESHMAN OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR Josh McGregor (JAC) Freshman Miami, Fla. McGregor led Jacksonville to its first PFL title with a 7-1 conference mark and 9-3 overall record. He finished fifth among league passers in passing yardage (194.2 ypg) and second in touchdown passes (24) and passing efficiency (148.9). FRESHMAN DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR Al-Rilwan Adeyemi (SAN) Freshman Defensive Back Santa Monica, Calif. Adeyemi paced the San Diego defense with five interceptions, ranking fourth among league leaders. However, he returned two of those picks for touchdowns, tying the league lead, and was seventh in passes defended (1.00 pg). Adeyemi also was ranked 20th among the leagu’s defensive backs in tackles per game. COACH OF THE YEAR Kerwin Bell (JAC) Second Season Bell won Coach of the Year honors for the first time in his second season at Jacksonville. He led the Dolphins from a seventh-place finish in 2007 to the league title in 2008. Jacksonville posted a 9-3 record this season, a five-game improvement from the previous year while the Dolphins 7-1 PFL mark was a 4½-game improvement. and a five-game improvement overall. GRIDIRON CLASSIC STORYLINES PFL CHAMPION JACKSONVILLE: Jacksonville clinched its first PFL championship with a 19-14 victory against Dayton, Nov. 22. The Dolphins became the first member of the 2001 expansion class – which included Davidson, Morehead State and former member Austin Peay – to claim a PFL title. Jacksonville previously won the PFL South Division crown in 2001 and shared the title in 2004. The 2001 division title earned the Dolphins a berth in the PFL Championship game which they lost to Dayton. ABOUT THE DOLPHINS: Freshman quarterback Josh McGregor and sophomore running back Rudell Small are the Dolphins one- two punch. McGregor enters the Classic ranked 11th among all FCS in passing efficiency (148.93) and 53rd in total of- fense (202.76 ypg). Small is ranked 20th in the FCS in rushing yards per game (109.83 ypg) and 30th in scoring (7.5 ppg). Defensively, sophomore defensive lineman Shaun Lewis is the big threat, ranking 15th in sacks (.75 pg) and 20th in tackles for loss (1.42 pg) PFL IN THE GRIDIRON CLASSIC: The Pioneer Football League has won the two previous Gridiron Classics.
