Garfield’s home. From 1938 until 1983 a version of the Lake County Historical Socie- ty maintained President James A. Garfield’s home in Mentor, Ohio. In 1983, the National Park Service assumed operation and we moved op- erations to Shadybrook in Kirtland Hills, Ohio. The site included a muse- um, living history village, and research center. In 2007, the Lake County History Center was created through a pur- chase of 8-acres from Riverside Schools and the former 30,000 sq.ft. Lake County Home. Today, we offer a wide range of changing exhibits, programs and workshops for both adults and youth, site rentals, special events, publications, and outreach programs. This is an illustration of the Lake County Home as it originally looked when it was built in 1876. Required by state law, each county had to build a home for those less fortunate. Lake County hired Benjamin Morse, architect and Col. Arthur McAllister to build the home for $30,000. McAllister is known for building the Soldiers and Sailors monument in Cleveland. The building is 30,000 square feet in size and held 22 bedrooms. A hos- pital was added in 1897 and is still part of the building. The Lake County Home closed in 2004. 5 Our Mission Originally founded in 1938, we believe in providing the best histori- cal and educational experience for residents and visitors. The Lake County Historical Society is committed to ensuring, through our collections, research library, educational outreach activities and publications, the preservation of Lake County historical records and cultural traditions and to use Society resources and partnerships to en- gage the community, assess changing needs and be a responsible ad- vocate for the local arts and culture community. The Lake County History Center today. The main building contains exhibit areas, gift shop, rental party room, caterer’s kitchen and a reception area. The second floor con- tains staff offices, research library, classrooms, and collection storage. There is an elevator rising from ground level in the parking area to the 2nd floor, making the site available to special needs guests. Outbuildings house maintenance equipment, event barn with stage and the historic Pioneer Village. 6 7 Education Offerings - Youth SCHOOL & HOMESCHOOL PROGRAMS Gingerbread Christmas – PreK Experience the holiday with taste, sound, and activity as kids decorate their own gingerbread cookies and help act out some fun stories!
