Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 The Representation of Reality and Fantasy In the Films of Powell and Pressburger: 1939-1946 This thesis will examine the films planned or made by Powell and Pressburger in this period, with these aims: to demonstrate the way the contemporary realities of wartime Britain (political, social, cultural, economic) are represented in these films, and how the realities of British history (together with information supplied by the Ministry of Information and other government ministries) form the basis of much of their propaganda. to chart the changes in the stylistic combination of realism, naturalism, expressionism and surrealism, to show that all of these films are neither purely realist nor seamless products of artifice but carefully constructed narratives which use fantasy genres (spy stories, rural myths, futuristic utopias, dreams and hallucinations) to convey their message.

CALIGARI (I9I9), NOSFERATU (1922), to the recent Roger Corman-Vincent Price British series of adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe, represented here by THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH (I96IO. Milestones of American horror films, the Universal series in the 1950s, include THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925), FRANKENSTEIN (1951), his BRIDE (l$55), his SON (1929), and THE MUMMY (1953). The resurgence of the horror film in the 1940s, as seen in a series produced by Val Lewton at RR0, is represented by THE CAT PEOPLE (19^), THE CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE (19^4), I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE (19*£), and THE BODY SNAT0HER (19^5). Richard Griffith, Director of the Film Library, and Mr. Mayer, in their book, The Movies, state that "In true horror films, the archcriminal becomes the archfiend the first and greatest of whom was undoubtedly Lon Chaney. ...The year Lon Chaney died [1951], his director, Tod Browning,filmed DRACULA and therewith launched the full vogue of horror films. What made DRACULA a turning-point was that it did not attempt to explain away its tale of vampirism and supernatural horrors.

Alan Hughes, University of Central Lancashire The North of England is a place-myth as much as a material reality. Conceptually it exists as the location where the economic, political, sociological, as well as climatological and geomorphological, phenomena particular to the region are reified into a set of socio-cultural qualities that serve to define it as different to conceptualisations of England and ‘Englishness’. Whilst the abstract nature of such a construction means that the geographical boundaries of the North are implicitly ill-defined, for ease of reference, and to maintain objectivity in defining individual texts as Northern films, this paper will adhere to the notion of a ‘seven county North’ (i.e. the pre-1974 counties of Cumberland, Westmorland, Northumberland, County Durham, Lancashire, Yorkshire, and Cheshire) that is increasingly being used as the geographical template for the North of England within social and cultural history.1 The British film industry in 1941 As 1940 drew to a close in Britain any memories of the phoney war of the spring of that year were likely to seem but distant recollections of a bygone age long dispersed by the brutal realities of the conflict. Outside of the immediate theatres of conflict the domestic industries that had catered for the demands of an increasingly affluent and consuming population were orientated towards the needs of a war economy as plant, machinery, and labour shifted into war production.

Today we can look back at that primitive movie and see all the elements of what would evolve HISTORICAL into the Western genre.     Freeview 81 Film Club Sky 328 Freesat 306 JULY 2019 newsletter Virgin 445 Dear Supporters of Talking Pictures TV & Renown Pictures, Talking Pictures TV turned 4 a few weeks ago, so a jolly happy birth- day to us! Here’s to many more years of preserving film history and making sure films and series don’t get left on dusty shelves where no– one can see them! I hate to think how old Renown Pictures is now…. We had trip to Devon this month to meet the wonderful Joss Ack- land at his home. We filmed with Joss for four hours as he delighted us with childhood memories and snippets of the strange sequence of events in his life and career, I can’t say too much – so watch out for the interview that will be airing on the channel later this year. We also filmed with the wonderful Tom Owen this month, what a lovely chap, fond memories of fishing on Brighton pier with his dear dad Bill Owen and some great insights into both his and his father’s career. We have received a number of complaints from people staying in hotels around the country recently that TPTV was not available on their hotel TV set. We should be available in all hotels but sadly the management of the hotels can be very lax at completing the tuning process on their TVs. If you stay somewhere and TPTV is not available please demand they re-tune so we will be there next time – it’s amaz- ing how many people have found us while on holiday and continue to watch us when they get home! This month we bring you the wonderful Mr Pastry Collection, fully restored from the original elements WITH SUBTITLES and some exclusive snippets from Richard Hearne’s private film collection as bonus extra features.
