As I write, I’ve managed to trap and ring almost 3,500 different birds of 43 species, in six years in my garden. That’s quite a lot, isn’t it? Now, admittedly, a lot of them are common garden birds, for example, Chaffinches, House Sparrows and Greenfinch, but, I’ve also caught much less common birds, such as Treecreepers, Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Nuthatches and Bullfinches. It doesn’t end there, as I’ve been lucky enough to catch quite rare birds, such as Grasshopper Warbler, Whitethroat, Garden Warblers, Sedge Warblers, Blackcap and my favourite bird, the Firecrest, one of which you can see below. Now, I’m no expert, but I do know a bit about British birds and am still learning about Dartmoor’s birdlife. If you see any bird you can’t identify, an unusual one, or you have any questions, then do, please get in touch. I live at 7 Plymouth Hill, where Winnie Cooper used to live, so do come and knock on the door. My e-mail address is [email protected] and my telephone number is 890520. If I’m asked to write any more articles for the newsletter, then I’d like to let you know about where ‘ my birds’ have gone to, or come from, and to give you some idea of how long birds live, amongst other things. The moral of the story, however, is that if you keep your eyes on your garden as much as you can, even whilst you’re doing the washing up… you just never know! 4 In aid of Princetown Pre-school Individual Ticket: £2.00 Family Ticket: £6.00 Tickets available from the Library, Charity Shop, Pre-school & School. Dartmoor Firing Notice as at 26.5.11 provided by Terry Westacott. Warning signals, red flags by day and red lamps by night, indicate that live firing is taking place within the range boundaries, which are marked by red and white poles. When warning signals are displayed do not cross the range boundary. If the warning signals are not hoisted by 0900 (Apr-Sep) no live firing will take place that day and any bangs you hear will be blank cartridges or fireworks. DAY firing is between sunrise and sunset. NIGHT firing is between sunset and sunrise. Flags are lowered as soon as live firing ceases. For updates on the firing programme ring Freephone 0800 458 4868 or visit the website www.dartmoor-ranges.co.uk. The Group is affiliated to the national organisation of the Civil Service Retirement Fellowship through it’s membership of the Cornwall and West Devon Branch. Thus, it abides by that organisation’s constitution and aims. However, it is autonomous in all matters relating to the day to day running of the Group. The main aims of the C. S. Retirement Fellowship are to help relieve any problems, through friendship, which may be encountered in retirement. Our motto being “Caring, Sharing and Supporting”. We try to either visit or write to all Princetown Group members and beneficiaries each month to keep everyone up to date on our activities and encourage an active social programme. All of the activities arranged are in accordance with wishes of the members, being discussed and agreed at our regular get-togethers. The Group meets on the first Thursday of each month throughout the year. During the winter months we also invite a Guest Speaker to address the meeting on a variety of interesting subjects, each usually complimented by a photographic slide-show. In December we also organise a Christmas Lunch and Party in the Prince of Wales Hotel, and in April we organise a St George’s Day Luncheon, in a different venue each year.

This information has been produced by the Dartmoor National Park Authority in conjunction with Dartmoor For All, and is designed to help and encourage those who are disabled, less mobile or have young children, to relax, unwind and enjoy the peace and quiet of the beautiful countryside in the Dartmoor area. This information will help you to make the right choices for your day out. Nearly half of Dartmoor is registered common land. Under the Dartmoor Commons Act 1985, a right of access was created for persons on foot or horseback. This right extends to those using wheelchairs, powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters, although one should be aware that the natural terrain and gradients may curb access in practice. Common land and other areas of 'access land' are marked on the Ordnance Survey (OS) map, Outdoor Leisure 28.

Bellever Audio Walk Transcript Peter Nash – Presenter Jackie Ridley, Sustainable Tourism Officer, Dartmoor National Park Authority Jane Marchand, Archaeologist, Dartmoor National Park Authority Dru Butterfield, Manager, Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust Track One – Introduction Postbridge Information Centre (Grid reference SX 646 789) Hello and welcome to Dartmoor National Park and this audio walk from Postbridge pretty much in the centre of the park in to Bellever forest, which promises to be a fascinating walk, with a lot of prehistoric remains to be explored. We are starting off at the Information Centre in the Postbridge car park, and as with all Dartmoor National Park Authority audio walks, we have divided this audio tour in to several sections, each one being a separate track for you to download on to your player. That way you can simply switch off when you are walking and then start playing the new track at the next point of interest, and I will give you full directions when to do this on the audio itself. You will also find that the name of each track include the grid reference of where you should be, so that you can follow the tour using a standard Ordnance Survey map, Explorer OL28 for Dartmoor, in this case, or you can download the accompanying map so you have a back up to the instructions on the audio. Today’s walk is a circular one, beginning and ending at the Information Centre, taking us out of Postbridge to the south and in to Bellever forest, and then Krap’s Ring, a large enclosure of hut rings and then onward to Lakehead Hill.

The Trust met most of its strategic objectives for the year, exceeding targets for habitat creation and species protection, and inspiring thousands of people to connect with and act for wildlife. Our work as part of the Wildlife Trust movement (TWTs) has progressed significant legal protections for the natural environment – such as securing new Marine Conservation Zones and lobbying for a robust Environment Act - and we have worked closely with a range of partners, local communities, individual supporters and other stakeholders to drive local improvements for wildlife and to put the need to protect and restore our precious natural environment high on the public and political agenda. Key Achievements for the year against our Aims and Objectives are detailed in section 2 of the Trustees’ Annual Report and show the enormous range and depth of work we are doing, together, to protect Devon’s wildlife. Some of the highlights for me are: • The work we have done to restore and create better protected and better connected nature rich areas where wildlife can thrive, as well as improving our soils, rivers and the wildlife-richness of the wider landscape.

  • Y410012 Memoirs of Charles Allen Copy 2
Y410012 MEMOIRS of CHARLES ALLEN Memoirs of Charles Allen, regional secretary of the Youth Hostels Association, Devon and Cornwall Regional Group, for the period of 33 years, 1933-1965. Gifted to the YHA Archive by Roger Gaffney and transcribed by the YHA Archivist, August 2017 Note: these invaluable memoirs do throw up some discrepancies with dates. Where Allen’s dates differ from the archivist’s and others’ research, editorial alternatives are included in square brackets. Other additions are also included thus. Minor corrections of spelling and punctuation have been made without notification. The work seems to have been finished in 1977, as a spiral-bound typescript of 65 pages. There are a couple of afternotes into the 1980s. It is not known how widespread the issue was – only the single example in the YHA Archive has been seen to date. The thirty-three years work for the YHA D and C Region gave me a life full of interest and drive in the work of setting up of Youth Hostels in the West Country. I hope that my story relating in many cases to the humorous side of a secretary’s work will be of interest as to the pioneering days of YHA in the West Country. My comment on Hostels and in some cases the wardens of particular hostels will relate if the rotation as to the year in which the hostel was established. I realise that my work as secretary would not have succeeded without the help and expertise of a number of people who I will list hereunder, and to all of whom I tender a sincere THANK YOU.
