VIRGIN 2015 - Brenda Kinch

Five years on from coming first in the 64-69 age category at the London Marathon in 2010, after the first lady turned out to be a man and was disqualified, I could not believe that I was actually on the th green start nervously waiting the 35 Anniversary of the London Marathon. I suffered two stress fractures of the pelvis in 2011, which put me out of running the World Masters Marathon in Sacramento California, and then ten days before the London Marathon in 2013 I went down with th pneumonia. I felt that I had unfinished business, so I decided this years London (my 6 ) was to be my last London Marathon. I planned to enjoy every minute (if that’s possible!)

My plan was to run at an average of 10 minute mile pace, this would mean a finish time under four and a half hours. I felt I could sustain this pace with something left in the legs for the last few miles. The weather was perfect conditions for running, cloudy and around 10-12 deg. Once off, I settled into my own pace ready to face the challenge ahead, with everyone running past me. The crowd support was amazing along the entire route; I think Paula Radcliff running her last Marathon had brought out the whole of London. Miles seem to pass quickly; children were handing out jelly babies, others had hands out for a high-five, and people were calling out my name saying well done keep going, this is always a boost.

Approaching mile nine, I started looking for Graham at the pre-arranged place when I suddenly heard Bren, I had almost gone past him but managed to turn round and wave. Just under the half way point, approaching Tower Bridge the crowds went berserk; that helped me focus on the miles ahead. I was so surprised when Ian Smith suddenly came running beside me about mile 15, after a quick chat he ran ahead. Coming out of the tunnel on to The Embankment at twenty four miles, I was looking forward to a cheer from Graham at the Watford Joggers water station, I waved as I passed but Graham didn’t see me, he was busy changing his camera battery!! Digging deep leaving The Embankment behind, I passed Westminster, St James’s Park, and then Buckingham Palace. As I turned into The Mall it was a fantastic feeling: I put on a sprint as I went through the finish; I was over th the moon to finish in 4:21:32 and came 5 in the 70-74 age category. I can actually say that I did enjoy my LAST London Marathon.

BEHIND THE SCENES OF THE FLORA LONDON MARATHON – Graham Kinch (originally published in BRINE Spring/Summer 2007)

Most of you have collected water during your local races Whilst this is going or perhaps even helped out on the North Norfolk Seven on, which takes at race. Usually there is someone with a beaker of water, least an hour and which has been filled from a water container, waiting for a half, there are you to take it from them the children and wheelchair races Twenty six years ago it was almost the same procedure going through. on the London Marathon. The only difference being that About 11.00 o’clock the water the tension came out mounts as the of a dustbin noise of the TV (Clean) helicopters are that had heard overhead been filled and then the lead from a car comes through followed by the first female stand pipe. runner. The Times have crowds erupt and moved on the noise is deafening. Normally these elite runners and with have their own water pick up points but this year, as 35,000 it was so hot, they all took water from our station. runners Gradually the number of female runners increase more sophisticated procedures are required. and then the process is repeated as the first male runners come through. It is now time for the really Watford Joggers, my old club have been running the water station at 24 miles for the last 26 years. It is now hard work to start. down to an almost military operation requiring 60 plus people to give out the Vittel water bottles, and that is just one of 19 water stations and 24 Lucozade points.

At 7.30am the advance party of three people arrive up at the embankment opposite Temple Tube Station to start the set up. Ten pallets of water have been placed strategically on the pavement over about 100 metres. Each pallet is shrink wrapped and contains about 2,500 bottles of water. The first job is too secure the area with tape and barriers to stop Joe Public coming in and then set up the trestle tables. About 9.00 the coach with the volunteers arrives. Now the work starts. The pallets have the outer shrink wrap removed to reveal just over 100 Runners are coming through in droves and they all shrink wrapped units each containing 24 bottles. Each want water and they weave in and out of the other unit has to be de shrinked and then the tops taken off runners to grab a bottle, sometimes missing and each bottle. This is hard work and special gloves are showering you with water! You gradually get used supplied to stop your hands getting ripped to shreds. to who you think is going to take the bottle, as they make eye contact with you, occasionally though the

As each 24 bottles is de lidded it then has to be stacked bottle is grabbed from your hand when you are least to await the runners. expecting it. The vast stocks of water at your table go down rapidly as your arm aches from hanging over the railings to give the water out. The other exciting duty is gutter sweeping! Yes going out on the road and picking up the bottles dropped by the runners and trying not to trip them up.

Runners always seem to go for the water at the first possible point of the 100 metre table so what happens, the tables run out from the front back. This year I finished on my table (2 nd in line) by about 13.30.

It is great fun, very hard work and you have a wonderful view of the whole race and oh yes you get to see the wife run past and can give her a cheer.

Name: Hazel Wray Joined NNBR: 2013

I Joined North Norfolk beach runners in 2013 after trying parkrun in the January, We only moved to Norfolk late in 2012.

I started running Started running properly jan 2013 when my youngest son introduced me to sheringham parkrun. Then went on to beach runners in March/April. Before this after we lost our German Shepard 'Bruce ' I started to jog a mile or so somewhat self consciously where we lived. I looked at joining a local running group who turned me down over the phone! Have since raced one of their races which was quietly satisfying.

Most satisfying performance Most satisfying performance would have to be Loch Ness marathon 2014 first marathon and such a beautiful place. Wonderful challenge which Chris and i did to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary, we thought it would be an unusual way to remember it by.

Club Standards

Well done to the following club members who Achieved Club Standards

Age- Category Name Cat Race 1 Race 2 Race 3 Race 4 achieved Claim date

A qualifying race must be an official event of 5Km, 5 miles, 10Km, 10 miles, Half Marathon, 15 Miles, 20 Miles and Full marathon. (Note club Handicap races and parkruns count) Training runs do not count, neither do race splits (therefore achieving a standard for a half marathon whilst running a marathon would not be counted).

Awards • An award will be given once a runner achieves 4 of the times given in the standard tables from the 8 distances.

• Only one standard category (eg Silver) can be achieved by a runner during the 5 year age bands, you could not receive the same award category for four different races. However a runner can achieve different award categories (eg a Copper and a Silver) during the 5 year age bands providing they are of a higher standard.

• The age bands will begin on the runner’s birthday.

• When a runner achieves a particular distance category which are recognized annually by a certificate, this will remain valid for the whole of the 5 year age band, therefore a runner need only achieve the qualifying time for a distance once during this period.

• If you achieve three bronze standard times and one copper standard time in your races you would receive the copper award.

• Runners who achieve a standard should apply to the standards secretary, giving the race venues, distances, dates and the official time (which can be independently verified) for all 4 qualifying races.

• A certificate will be given to each member for each category achieved, and the awards achieved that month will be printed in the club newsletter

• An award claim can only be made for the current age band, and not back dated for a previous age band.

• If there is any dispute this will be brought up at the next committee meeting where the Committee’s decision will be final
