    GENERAL ELECTIONS IN LUXEMBOURG 20th October 2013 European Elections monitor The Christian Social People’s Party of Prime Minister Jean- Claude Juncker in the lead but Corinne Deloy Translated by Helen Levy breakthrough by the Democratic Party in the general elections in Results Luxembourg The Christian Social People’s Party (PCS/CVS) of outgoing Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker and led by Michel Wolter is still the country’s leading party: it won 33.68% of the vote and 23 seats (-3 in comparison with the previous general election on 7th June 2009). It drew ahead of the Socia- list Workers’ Party (POSL/LSAP) of Alex Bodry which won 20.28% of the vote and 13 seats (=). The Democratic Party (PD/DP), led by the Mayor of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel seems to be the other victor in the election with 18.25% of the vote and 13 seats (+4). Sam Tanson and Christian Kmiotek’s Greens/Dei Greng (LV-DG) came fourth with 10.13% of the vote and 6 seats (-1). The Alternative Democratic Reform Party (ADR), led by Roby Mehlen won 6.64% of the vote and 3 seats (-1). The Left/Dei Lenk (LG/DL) won 4.92% and 2 seats (+1). Sven Clement’s Pirate Party, the Communist Party (KPL) led by Ali Ruckert and the Party for Integral Democracy (PID) respecti- vely won 2.94%, 1.64% and 1.51% of the vote. The Communists therefore failed to return to the Chamber of Deputies from which they have been absent since 2004 and the leader of the Party for Integral Democracy, Jean Colombera lost his seat.

    Joint letter by 442 parliamentarians from 22 European countries to European governments and leaders against Israeli de facto annexation of West Bank 28 February 2021 Dear High Representative Borrell, dear Foreign Ministers, The beginning of the Biden presidency provides a much-needed opportunity to address the Israeli- Palestinian conflict with renewed effort. The previous US administration left the conflict farther away from peace than ever. The Biden administration presents a chance to correct course and creates greater space for meaningful European engagement and leadership. In parallel, the announcement of Palestinian elections to be held in the coming months offers an opportunity for Palestinian political renewal and reunification. The recent regional normalization agreements with Israel led to the suspension of plans to formally annex West Bank territory. However, developments on the ground clearly point to a reality of rapidly progressing de facto annexation, especially through accelerated settlement expansion and demolitions of Palestinian structures. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, last year saw the highest number of demolitions of Palestinian homes and structures in four years, including humanitarian structures funded by European donors. This included the demolition of nearly an entire community in Khirbet Hamsa al-Foqa, in what the UN described as the largest forced displacement incident in over four years. At the same time, the advancement of illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory has skyrocketed, reaching the highest numbers since 2012, according to Peace Now. The recently approved construction of the Givat Hamatos settlement, previously referred to as Europe’s red line, is of particularly serious concern. Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate under the Israeli blockade, which is compounded by intra-Palestinian divisions.

    Joint letter by 1.080 parliamentarians from 25 European countries to European governments and leaders against Israeli annexation of West Bank 23 June 2020 We, parliamentarians from across Europe committed to a rules-based global order, share serious concerns about President Trump’s plan for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the imminent prospect of Israeli annexation of West Bank territory. We are deeply worried about the precedent this would set for international relations at large. For decades, Europe has been promoting a just solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the form of a two-state solution, in line with international law and relevant UN Security Council Resolutions. Regrettably, President Trump’s plan departs from internationally agreed parameters and principles. It promotes effectively permanent Israeli control over a fragmented Palestinian territory, leaving Palestinians with no sovereignty and giving a green light to Israel to unilaterally annex significant parts of the West Bank. In line with the Trump plan, Israel’s new coalition agreement states that the government can move forward with annexation as soon as 1 July 2020. Such a move will be fatal to the prospects of Israeli- Palestinian peace and will challenge the most basic norms guiding international relations, including the UN Charter. We are profoundly concerned about the impact of annexation on the lives of Israelis and Palestinians, as well as its destabilizing potential in a region on our continent’s doorstep. These concerns are no less serious at a time when the world is struggling with the COVID- 19 pandemic, the largest collective emergency we have faced for decades.
