We help your neighbors 2014 as you would like to be helped if your family were in need. Dear Friends of Catholic Charities: WELCOME FROM HIS EMINENCE, What an exciting and memorable year it has been to have our Holy Timothy Michael Father, Pope Francis, in New York and see the Church’s great work. I was so pleased to be able to show Pope Francis our splendidly restored Cardinal Dolan St. Patrick’s Cathedral, to join with interfaith religious leaders at Ground Zero and to celebrate Mass at Madison Square Garden. At each of those events, Catholic Charities was present. Catholic Charities Trustees, who oversee this great work, prayed with us at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Social service workers who supported mourning families and displaced worker of the 9/11 attack were at the Ground Zero prayer service. The altar, pulpit and chair and altar linens for the Mass at Madison Square Garden were made by men, women and youth that Catholic Charities assists. As impressive as these events were, I think many found Pope Francis’ visit to East Harlem particularly moving. Here Pope Francis, in a more intimate way, saw the Church, through Our Lady Queen of Angels School and Catholic Charities, so vibrant, warm and effective in “welcoming the stranger” in the name of Jesus. Pope Francis commented to me on the diversity of immigrants served by Catholic Charities. He had expected the many Latinos in the room, but was a bit surprised to meet new Americans from so many different countries and continents. Pope Francis just had a peek at Catholic Charities. I am fortunate to see the enormous scope of these services throughout the year. Ninety affiliated agencies in almost all the neighborhoods of New York serve the most vulnerable, treating each as made in God’s image. When I visit these programs, food pantries, community centers, shelters, among others, I see those served treated with warmth, compassion and dignity. In 2017 Catholic Charities will celebrate its Centennial. I take pride at what Catholic Charities has done. I am saddened that so much pain and sufferings means more still needs to be done. I am confident we will be 1 up to the task of further enhancing our help to New Yorkers in need. I thank you for your help and urge you to continue to support Catholic Charities in helping to serve our neighbors in need. Faithfully in Christ, 2015 ANNUAL REPORT 2015 ANNUAL : TIMOTHY MICHAEL CARDINAL DOLAN ARCHBISHOP OF NEW YORK 2014 Dear Friends, As I reflect upon another year as Chair of Catholic Charities Board of Trustees, I am proud of all we have accomplished and the progress we have made on behalf of New Yorkers in need. It was an honor to be in the presence of Pope Francis, and give him the gift of a cross on behalf of Catholic Charities when he visited and blessed immigrants and refugees in East Harlem. His impact, not only on the Catholic community but on the entire world, is truly remarkable. The Papal visit inspires us to look towards Catholic Charities Centennial in 2017. Catholic Charities has come a long way in the last 100 years. When formally established in 1917 we were primarily a large caretaker for orphaned and unwanted children, proving dependent and institutional care for thousands of youngsters each year. Now almost 100 years later we serve over 300,000 New Yorkers, non-Catholics and Catholics alike, with services touching the most vulnerable, including, children and families, the hungry and homeless, the disabled and immigrants and refugees. The effectiveness and growth of Catholic Charities is made possible by the tens of thousands of trustees, donors, employees and volunteers working together with compassion, dedication and generosity. Our work ensures that the most vulnerable New Yorkers MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR are treated with dignity and have the basic necessities to live their OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES lives in dignity.
