Summary of career:-

1969 – 1971 Research Officer at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, UK. Undertook research into the aerodynamics of high lift devices on aircraft.

1971 – 1974 Doctoral studies at McGill University Montreal, Canada into prediction and control of turbulent boundary layer flows over high lift devices on aircraft.

1974 – 1980 Research Officer at the National Research Council of Canada, Ottawa. Undertook research and consultation assignments on wind effects on large structures (tall towers, long span , stadia). In this period Dr. Irwin published a number of important papers on instrumentation for wind tunnel tests, and the response of long span bridges and stadium roofs to wind. In this period he also invented the Irwin Sensor, a device for rapidly measuring wind speeds around scale models of buildings and other structures that is now widely used at wind tunnel laboratories around the world.

1980 – 2012 Progressed through a variety of roles at Rowan Williams Davies and Irwin Inc. (and its predecessor companies), a leading private wind tunnel testing and wind consulting firm based in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Dr. Irwin was the Principal Engineer responsible for the company’s work on many major projects, examples of which are listed below. He was also the

1 firm’s Director of Technical Services, leading its development of wind tunnels and a number of special techniques for predicting wind and snow loads on structures. In 1999 he became President and CEO, a role in which he served until 2008. While he was CEO he expanded the firm’s international presence, opening offices across Canada, in the UK, in the USA and . The firm’s volume of business tripled under his leadership and it became the largest private wind engineering firm in the world. In 2008 he stepped down as President and CEO and served as Chairman of the Board until 2012. Currently he is a Senior Executive Consultant, providing technical advice on projects and technical development, assisting with business development, and providing management advice to the firm’s current executive team.
