Additions, Deletions and Corrections to the Staphylinidae in the Irish Coleoptera Annotated List, with a Revised Check-List of Irish Species

Cork, Republic of Ireland. e-mail: <[email protected]> 21 Belvoirview Park, Belfast BT8 7BL, Northern Ireland. e-mail: <[email protected]> Abstract Since the 1997 Irish Coleoptera – a revised and annotated list, 59 species of Staphylinidae have been added to the Irish list, 11 species confirmed, a number have been deleted or require to be deleted, and the status of some species and names require correction. Notes are provided on the deletion, correction or status of 63 species, and a revised check-list of 710 species is provided with a generic index. Species listed, or not listed, as Irish in the Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera (2nd edition), in comparison with this list, are discussed. The Irish status of Gabrius sexualis Smetana, 1954 is questioned, although it is retained on the list awaiting further investgation. Introduction The Staphylinidae (rove-beetles) comprise the largest family of beetles in Ireland (with 621 species originally recorded by Anderson, Nash and O’Connor (1997)) and in the world (with 55,440 species cited by Grebennikov and Newton (2009)). Since the publication in 1997 of Irish Coleoptera - a revised and annotated list by Anderson, Nash and O’Connor, there have been a large number of additions (59 species), confirmation of the presence of several species based on doubtful old records, a number of deletions and corrections, and significant nomenclatural and taxonomic changes to the list of Irish Staphylinidae. -

Entomol. 86(2): 494-504 (1993) ABSTRACT Pitfall traps were used to monitor the seasonal activity of arthropod preda tors, parasitoids, and decomposers in replicated plots of centipedegrass turf for 3 yr (1989-1991) at two locations. During 1990 and 1991, the influence of single or combined herbicide, insecticide, and fertilizer applications on these beneficials was assessed. In total, 21 species of carabids in 13 genera and 17 species of staphylinids in 14 genera were represented in pitfall-trap collections. Nonsminthurid collembolans, ants, spiders, and parasitic Hymenoptera were adversely affected in the short term by insecticide applica tions targeting the twolined spittlebug, Prosapia bicincta (Say). Other taxa, notably orib atid Acari, increased over time in response to pesticide or fertilizer applications. Although various taxa were reduced by pesticide application during three of four sample intervals, a lack ofoverall differences in season totals suggests that the disruptive influence ofcertain chemical management practices may be less severe than expected in the landscape. The corpse was found in a mixed deciduous forest of Biscay (northern Spain). Soil fauna was extracted by sieving the soil where the corpse lay and placing the remains in Berlese–Tullgren funnels. Necrophagous fauna on the human remains was dominated by the fly Piophilidae: Stearibia nigriceps (Meigen, 1826), mites Ascidae: Proctolaelaps epuraeae (Hirschmann, 1963), Laelapidae: Hypoaspis (Gaeolaelaps) aculeifer (Canestrini, 1884), and the beetle Cleridae: Necrobia rufipes (de Geer, 1775). We confirm the importance of edaphic fauna, especially if the deceased is discovered in natural environs. Related fauna may remain for days after corpse removal and reveal infor- mation related to the circumstances of death. The bionomics of both species are discussed based on European data in addition to new obser- vations of their ecology in Nova Scotia. The role of port cities, such as Halifax, in relation to the introduction of exotic Coleoptera is discussed with examples of other species introduced to North America from this location. The earliest known record of Meligethes viridescens (Fabricius) for North America and the second and third reported locations of Dromius fenestratus Fabricius are also presented. On the Lomechusini Fauna of Vietnam (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Aleocharinae)

Beitr. 47/2 1257-1282 30.12.2015 On the Lomechusini fauna of Vietnam (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Aleocharinae) Volker ASSING A b s t r a c t : Five species of Lomechusini from the environs of Sa Pa, North Vietnam, are described and illustrated: Amaurodera projecta nov.sp., Drusilla perforans nov.sp., Orphnebius fansipanicus nov.sp., Peltodonia atripalpis nov.sp., and Zyras (Zyras) fansipanicus nov.sp. Three probably undescribed species remain unnamed for want of males. Type material of nine described species is revised and illustrated. The previously unknown male sexual characters of Peltodonia chinensis (PACE, 1998) and Tetrabothrus bicolor CAMERON, 1939 are figured for the first time. Two synonymies and two new combinations are proposed: Tetrabothrus japonicus NAKANE, 1991 = T. vietnamiculus PACE, 2013; nov.syn.; Zyras neoparageminus HLAVÁČ, NEWTON & MARUYAMA, 2011 = Z. subgeminus PACE, 2012, nov.syn.; Zyras (Zyras) funestus (DVOŘAK, 1996), nov.comb. (ex Orphnebius MOTSCHULSKY, 1858); Zyras (Glossacantha) laocaiensis PACE, 2008, nov.comb. (ex Pella STEPHENS, 1833). A lectotype is designated for Tetrabothrus bicolor CAMERON, 1939. Three species and three genera are recorded from Vietnam for the first time. The Lomechusini fauna of Vietnam is currently represented by 29 species, partly of doubtful status, in seven genera. Introduction According to a recent catalogue (HLAVÁČ et al. 2011), the aleocharine tribe Lomechusini was represented in Vietnam by 19 species, one of Drusilla LEACH, 1819, two of Orphnebius MOTSCHULSKY, 1858, five of Pedinopleurus CAMERON, 1939, one of Pella STEPHENS, 1833, and ten of Zyras STEPHENS, 1833. -

Na druhé stran však dochází sou asn k jejímu ochuzování v souvislosti s rozvojem lidské spole nosti. Z pohledu ochrany p írody se proto horské ekosystémy adí mezi jedno z nejcenn jších a nejohrožen jších prost edí v globálním m ítku. V rámci p edložené doktorské práce byly studovány vybrané potenciáln významné antropické vlivy na biodiverzitu horských bezlesí Hrubého Jeseníku prost ednictvím modelové bioindika ní skupiny brouk (Coleoptera). V prostoru primárního bezlesí arkto- alpinní tundry byl studován vliv sjezdových tratí a invazivní d eviny borovice kle e ( Pinus mugo ) na spole enstva brouk . Na území sekundárních bezlesí podhorských luk a pastvin byl hodnocen vliv zem dlského hospoda ení na brouky a další bezobratlé. Studium vlivu lyža ského areálu prokázalo, že p estože jsou sjezdové trat v alpínské zón zájmového území provozovány zp sobem šetrným k vegetaci, tak pr kazn m ní pvodní spole enstva epigeických brouk . -
