A’s Trade 1B to Seattle for OF

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s traded first baseman Yonder Alonso to the for outfielder Boog Powell, the club announced today.

Alonso is batting .266 with a career-high 22 home runs in 100 games after hitting 39 home runs in 664 games over his first seven seasons. He ranks 10th in the American League in OPS (.896) and has the most home runs by an A’s first baseman since Jason Giambi in 2001. The 30-year-old left-handed hitter was named to his first All-Star team this year. Alonso is batting .213 over his last 47 games after hitting .314 over his first 53 contests.

Powell made his Major League debut with Seattle this year and hit .194 with two RBI in 23 games over three stints with the Mariners. He is batting .340 with six home runs, 33 RBI and 11 stolen bases in 58 games with Triple-A Tacoma. The 24-year-old left-handed hitter played eight games in left field and one in right field with Seattle and has appeared in 25 games in right field, 24 in center field and nine in left field with Tacoma. Powell was originally selected by the A’s in 20th round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft. He was traded to Tampa Bay Jan. 10, 2015 as part of the deal and dealt to the Mariners following the 2015 season. Powell is a .306 hitter with a .391 on-base percentage in 416 games over six seasons in the minors.
