BAFFERT GOES INSIDE, OUTSIDE IN STARLET By Lenny Shulman

rainer has his foes surrounded in Los TAlamitos' $300,000 Starlet Stakes (gr. I). Baffert, who has three victories in the race formerly known as the Hollywood Starlet, starts Treasuring from the rail and Pretty N Cool from the outside post in the 1 1/16-mile event for 2-year-old fillies. With champion-to-be Songbird sitting out, the race is highly competitive. Pretty N Cool took the Sorrento (gr. II) in August and shipped to New York to annex the Matron (gr. II) before stopping late in the Desi Arnaz. She tries two turns for the first time. Treasuring, from a strong female family, has the speed to gain the lead from the inside, and showed a strong late kick when second in the Arnaz. Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer also has a formidable pair: multiple stakes winner Stays in Vegas, who switches back to the main track after two turf scores, and Anoakia Stakes winner Tiara. Pacific Heat and Mama's Sugar, who have been brilliant in their young careers, adds more spice to the field. BH
