Biographical Sketch Dr. Margarita Peraza-Rugeley is an Assistant Professor of Spanish in the Department of English, Foreign Languages and Philosophy at Henderson State University. Her scholarly interests center on colonial Latin-American literature from New Spain, specifically the 17th century. Using the case of the Spanish colonies, she explores the birth of national identities in hybrid cultures. Another scholarly interest is the genre of Latin American colonialist narratives by modern-day female authors who situate their plots in the colonial period. In 2013, she published Llámenme «el mexicano»: Los almanaques y otras obras de Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora (Peter Lang,). She also has published short stories. During the summer of 2013, she spent time in Seoul’s National University and, in summer 2014, in Kyungpook National University, both in South Korea. https://www.facebook.com/StringPoet/ The Best Players in New York Mets History Fred Worth, Ph.D.

A Point-Mass Mixture Random Effects Model for Pitching Metrics James Piette, Alexander Braunstein, Blakeley B. McShane, and Shane T. Jensen Abstract A plethora of statistics have been proposed to measure the effectiveness of pitchers in Major League Baseball. While many of these are quite traditional (e.g., ERA, wins), some have gained currency only recently (e.g., WHIP, K/BB). Some of these metrics may have predictive power, but it is unclear which are the most reliable or consistent. We address this question by constructing a Bayesian random effects model that incorporates a point mass mixture and fitting it to data on twenty metrics spanning approximately 2,500 players and 35 years. Our model identifies FIP, HR/ 9, ERA, and BB/9 as the highest signal metrics for starters and GB%, FB%, and K/9 as the highest signal metrics for relievers. In general, the metrics identified by our model are independent of team defense.

  • Heroes and Rallies Baseball
Heroes and Rallies Baseball Setup Pick two teams to go head to head, and fill out your lineups on the scoresheet. Each team receives 8 skill assignments to give to individual players. All of the skill assignments listed below must be used within your starting lineup for a total of 8. A player may possess two assignments if you wish. Rate your lineup by placing the appropriate notation beside a player’s name on the scoresheet. 1) star hitter (H) 2) star slugger (S) 3) star runner (R) 4) star fielder (F) 5) poor hitter (H-) 6) weak hitter (S-) 7) slow runner (R-) 8) poor fielder (F-) Once a player has a skill assignment, he cannot transfer it to another player. There is one additional skill assignment available for an ace pitcher (X). You may, however, choose not to start one. Make any pitcher a poor hitter as well (H-), so there will be two poor hitters if a pitcher is in the lineup. Game Play Roll the dice for each player who comes up to bat, reading the colored die first and the white die second. If a result occurs on the Batting chart which displays an image of a ballplayer, the inning is considered finished with no further scoring. Draw an X in the box on the scoresheet representing the current hitter’s at-bat. When his team next comes up to bat, the next player in the lineup will hit. If the color of a chart result corresponds to the color of the skill assignment of the player who is currently up to bat, the result changes to the one shown on the bottom of the Batting chart.

  • My Tom Seaver Memories
My Tom Seaver Memories This past week the world lost one of the greats as George Thomas Seaver passed away at the age of 75 in Calistoga, CA. For many around my age, this was the passing of one of our first sports heroes. The pitcher we knew as “Tom Terrific” and “The Franchise” is one of the biggest reasons I am a sports fan and along with Muhammad Ali, Walt “Clyde” Frazier and Joe Namath formed my personal childhood “Mount Rushmore” of sports legends. So, it really hit me when Seaver passed and opened a floodgate of memories that I felt compelled to write down. This won’t be short and definitely not “perfect” (I will blame Jimmy Qualls for any grammar errors), but if you have some time, sit back and enjoy. In September of 1969 I started kindergarten at Birchwood Elementary School (I shared Mrs. Kelly’s afternoon class with my future wife Sandy, but that is a story for another day). I was the fourth Maroney child to go to school there, following my older siblings Richard, Rosemary and Kevin. This was in the midst of a phenomenal New York City sports run that unfortunately I was a little young to truly enjoy. On January 12, 1969 the Joe Namath lead Jets shockingly upset the heavily favored Baltimore Colts to win Super Bowl III. I have no real time memories of this game but have read all about it, watched all the highlights and thanks to the NFL Network, currently have the game downloaded on my DVR (Try to explain to any of us back then the powers of the DVR and you would be locked up in an insane asylum).
