chapter 6 The Macedonian Dynasty and the Expanding Empire, Ninth–Tenth Centuries Basil i’s Use of the Elect Nation Concept Basil i seized the throne after having murdered the legitimate emperor Mi- chael iii on 24 September 867.1 In spite of this inglorious rise to power, Basil founded a dynasty which ruled the Byzantine empire for nearly 200 years. The Macedonian dynasty’s legitimacy relied to a great extent on the successful basis of legitimacy which Basil i formed and upon his own personal image, as transmitted through the Macedonian imperial ideology. This chapter will focus on the reign of Basil i. The main thesis of the chapter is that Basil gained his legitimacy as a ruler through the use of the Byzantine enc and its incorporation into the imperial ideology, creating a bond between the ruler and the Byzantine population: both were promoted as two facets and collaborating guardians of the Elect Nation identity, as formed after the Triumph of Orthodoxy in 843. Basil’s Image and Its Relationship to ot Models The image that Basil promoted and its relationship to ot models have been studied extensively by scholars such as Paul Magdalino,2 Gilbert Dagron3 and Leslie Brubaker.4This image was intended to legitimize Basil as a God-sent righ- teous king who rightly succeeded the former emperor, who had gone astray and whom God wished to supplant. Michael iii plays in this narrative the part 1 Basil was crowned by Michael iii as co-emperor on may 26, 866. When Basil felt that his position might be threatened and that Michael might supplant him, he murdered Michael and became sole emperor. -

The research took place at the Centre for Byzantine Research in Athens (IVE) with the financial support of the Ministry of Science and Technology of Serbian Government and the Serbian Orthodox Metropoly of Montenegro. The first preliminary results on the supposed, now lost source of Constantine Porphyrogenitus, were published in an article in Byzantina Symmeikta (2010) and the results I presented at that time allowed me to try to make a more profound analysis of that source and eventually to reveal the most significant number of its fragments preserved in the Croat and Serb chapters of De administrando imperio – its original purpose – as well as the possible background of its composition. -

The Development of Early Imperial Dress from the Tetrarchs to the Herakleian Dynasty General Introduction The emperor, as head of state, was the most important and powerful individual in the land; his official portraits and to a lesser extent those of the empress were depicted throughout the realm. His image occurred most frequently on small items issued by government officials such as coins, market weights, seals, imperial standards, medallions displayed beside new consuls, and even on the inkwells of public officials. As a sign of their loyalty, his portrait sometimes appeared on the patches sown on his supporters’ garments, embossed on their shields and armour or even embellishing their jewelry. Among more expensive forms of art, the emperor’s portrait appeared in illuminated manuscripts, mosaics, and wall paintings such as murals and donor portraits. Several types of statues bore his likeness, including those worshiped as part of the imperial cult, examples erected by public 1 officials, and individual or family groupings placed in buildings, gardens and even harbours at the emperor’s personal expense. -

This is in the foreground. The work is concerned with textbooks which were: 1) Compiled by Macedonians and published between1857 and 1880. 2) Written in Macedonian or with many elements of the language of our people. 3) Used in Macedonian schools or generally among the people (e.g. for self- education). We mention a total of sixteen such books by the following writers: Parteni Zografski, Kuzman Šapkarev, Dimitar V. Makedonski and Gjorgji Pulevski. The period of their publication is an especially important and interesting one for our new national history. It was the time when, though still in embryo, some of the basic historical factors which were later to influence our further national development were emerging. The publication of Macedonian text-books together with their use in schools, reflecting, as it does, the independent development of the Macedonian people, represents for us an important cultural and historical phenomenon. Interest in them is, therefore, not restricted solely to surveying them from the linguistic and pedagogical viewpoint. It is directed first of all to the question: what does the publication of these text-books reveal of our national development about the middle of the last century and later. -

Introduction Speaking in Ljubljana in 1913, the Slovene poet Ivan Cankar called for a political union of the South Slavs, lamenting the historical circumstances that had brought about the cultural estrangement of the “Yugoslav tribe”: “By blood we are brothers, by language cousins, by culture -- which is the fruit of centuries of separate upbringing -- we are less familiar with one another than the Upper Carniolan peasant is with the Tyrolean, or the Gorizian vintner with the Friulian” (Cankar 2009). The postulate of cultural separation, or “separate upbringing” as Cankar eloquently expressed it, is built on the premise that ethnic and national features are forged over the longue durée, through centuries of constant and unwavering exposure to one cultural model or civilization. The national predispositions and inclinations thus acquired are believed to supersede evident commonalities such as language and local custom -- as in the case of the Serbs and Croats, who are bound by language but separated by confessional and perceived historical allegiances. This premise is central to the narratives of the Balkan nationalisms. Thus, according to Croatian nationalists and historians such as Ivo Banac, Franjo Tuđman, and Branimir Anzulović, the Orthodox Serbs, whose medieval principalities bordered the Byzantine Empire until their destruction by the Ottomans in the fifteenth century, had over the centuries developed different habits and worldviews from the Catholic Croats. Their cultural origins, these authors claimed, lie in the Byzantine civilization (Banac 1984: 65 et passim; Tuđman, cit. in Bellamy 2003: 68; Anzulović 1999: 17 et passim). Many nationalists in Serbia would agree with the assessment that the Byzantine civilization left a deep imprint on the formation of their culture and identity (Perica 2002: 6-9). -

Euripides Scenes in Byzantine Art
EURIPIDES SCENES IN BYZANTINE ART (PLATES 25-36) N EXT to Homer's Odyssey and Iliad no classical text has stimulated the imagina- tion in the representational arts of classical antiquity more than the dramas of Euripides. A few decades after they were written vase painters of the fourth century B.C. depicted significant moments of Euripidean plays, the two Iphigenias, the Medea, the Oenomauas,the HypsipylCe,the Andromeda and many others in complex compositions.1 Hardly a century later, at the beginning of Hellenism, the desire of the artists to represent the content of a single drama more fully than was possible in even the most complex vase paintings led to the invention of narrative picture cycles in which scene follows scene as the narration proceeds with constant repetition of the chief actors. It is significant that even in the earliest group of monuments on which this new principle of pictorial narration can most clearly be studied, the so-called Megarian bowls, illustrations of Euripidean dramas already rival those of Homeric poems for numerical superiority.2 In both methods, the monoscenic and the cyclic, illustrations from Euripides enjoy a rare popularity throughout the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Numerous Pompeian frescoes which seem to copy earlier panel paintings of great masters depict moments of highly dramatic tension such as the sudden recognition of Jason by Pelias, the brooding of Medea before the killing of her children, or Iphigenia's encounter with Orestes and Pylades,' scenes which undoubtedly are dependent on the Peliades, the Medea, and the Iphigenia Among the Taurians of Euripides.
