Rather than constituting an anomalous, ironical, or revolutionary episode in American political history, the Confederacy sought to conserve their definition of American liberty and democracy, with its racial grants, privileges, and sanction of slavery, through the power of government. The embrace of federal power was an intentional, central, and desirable feature of government, and one that Confederates embraced in order to sustain and project their nation and its vision of American democracy. vi INTRODUCTION At a reunion of the Stonewall Brigade in 1892 former commanding General James Walker looked back and observed, “In fact if you take out of the Confederate history the deeds of her armies and the devotion and the sacrifices of the Southern women there is nothing left.”1 Walker’s comment usefully illustrates the overwhelming degree of attention afforded to the battlefield, with its seemingly innate allure attested to by the unrelenting legion of volumes published on the Civil War. Walker’s observance also highlights the vital contributions and varying roles of women in the Civil War. There is, however, a notable omission in Walker’s preferred rendering of the Confederate past - the complete absence of politics. In memoriam Walker renders the memory of the Confederate government invisible. Walker’s quote also usefully highlights the degree to which Confederate nostalgia has influenced scholarly interest. Modern scholarship continues to enrich our understanding of the Civil War, with ongoing inquiry resulting in the field’s remarkable and vital diversification. From medicine and death to gender, destruction, and environment, scholarship on the Civil War has never been more exciting and dynamic.2 Despite scholars’ rich historical explorations, the question 1 South Branch Intelligencer (Romney, W.V.) While scholars have broadened our understanding of the Confederacy, most works that discuss politics explain why the Confederate government failed rather than how it functioned. As a result there is a tendency to approach Confederate federalism and central state organization as evidence of a venture gone wrong. According to scholars’ varying conclusions, the betrayal results from either the failure of leadership, the shortcomings of political culture, the general depravity of planter’s parochial worldview, an insistence on state’s rights, or merely the irony of unintended consequence. Shifting the analytical approach away from culpability yields important insights. Confederate leaders embraced federal power and government, viewing its control essential to protect and advance the grants of American liberty as defined by the Constitution. By asserting that eighteenth-century definitions of political liberty were essential to American democracy, Confederates claimed to preserve constitutional liberty and to affix its definitions for all time. Linking racial hierarchy, economic prosperity, and political power through the auspices of federal power constituted the central thrust of Confederate desire. They did not desire to revolutionize, reject, or transform the government or the political culture of the American state, but to embrace its powers and cement slavery’s status as a vital elucidation of white liberty. They sought to conserve and control rather than to transform or revolutionize. The Constitution’s political grants of liberty, according to the breakaway Southerners, were rooted in racial division, which defined the body politic according to race and afforded white citizens the privilege to own slaves and command black labor. Indeed, Confederates argued, this makeup was necessary and essential to creating unity and the model of classical republican virtue set forth by the Founding generation. As Alexander Stephens explained in his vast apologia, A Constitutional View of the Late War Between the States, what some viewed as farce, a definition of liberty that rested upon slavery, instead constituted an essential component of the white South’s understanding of liberty. Judge Bynum, Stephens’ synthetic Republican, interrupted the Sage of Liberty Hall in his fictional salon as he recalled a speech spelling forth

    Civil War 150 Years Ago June 1864 Grant pounds away in the East while Sherman maneuvers through Georgia. June 1 Major Union attack at Cold Harbor, Virginia June 3 All-out Union assault at Cold Harbor, Virginia. On May 31, Sheridan’s cavalry seized the vital crossroads of Old Cold Harbor. Early on June 1, relying heavily on their new repeating carbines and shallow entrenchments, Sheridan’s troopers threw back an attack by Confederate infantry. Confederate reinforcements arrived from Richmond and from the Totopotomoy Creek lines. Late on June 1, the Union Sixth and Eighteenth Corps reached Cold Harbor and assaulted the Confederate works with minimal success. By June 2, both armies were on the field, forming on a seven-mile front that extended from Bethesda Church to the Chickahominy River. At dawn June 3, the Second and Eighteenth Corps, followed later by the Ninth Corps, assaulted along the Bethesda Church-Cold Harbor line and were slaughtered at all points. Grant commented in his memoirs that this was the only attack he wished he had never ordered. The armies confronted each other on these lines until the night of June 12, when Grant again advanced by his left flank, marching to James River. On June 14, the Second Corps was ferried across the river at Wilcox’s Landing by transports. On June 15, the rest of the army began crossing on a 2,200-foot long pontoon bridge at Weyanoke. Abandoning the well-defended approaches to Richmond, Grant sought to shift his army quickly south of the river to threaten Petersburg.

Some will dream that they might accomplish a decisive victory, and in this Robert E. Lee was no different. By the late spring of 1863 he already had notable successes in battlefield trials. But now, over two years into a devastating war, he was looking to destroy the military force that would again oppose him, thereby assuring an end to the war to the benefit of the Confederate States of America. In the late spring of 1863 he embarked upon an audacious plan that necessitated a huge vulnerability: uncovering the capital city of Richmond. His speculation, which proved prescient, was that the Union army that lay between the two capitals would be directed to pursue and block him as he advanced north Robert E. Lee, 1865 (LOC) of the Potomac River. He would thereby draw it out of entrenched defensive positions held along the Rappahannock River and into the open, stretched out by marching. He expected that force to risk a battle against his Army of Northern Virginia, one that could bring a Federal defeat such that the cities of Philadelphia, Baltimore, or Washington might succumb, morale in the North to continue the war would plummet, and the South could achieve its true independence. One of Lee’s major generals would later explain that Lee told him in the march to battle of his goal to destroy the Union army.

    Carl Sandburg, The Confederate States of America, and the UNC Herbarium by Herbarium Natural Science Technician Carol Ann McCormick This summer Rickie White, Regional Vegetation Ecologist with NatureServe, spent many weeks in the University of North Carolina Herbarium identifying and mounting plant specimens that he and fellow botanists Alan Weakley, Tom Ferguson, and Anne Ulinski had collected at the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site in Flat Rock, North Carolina. In addition to managing the antebellum home, the National Park Service preserves the 264-acres of surrounding pastures, rock outcrops, forests, and woodlands. NatureServe is working collaboratively with park service staff and volunteers to update the herbarium at the park and to attempt to collect and to voucher at least 90% of the vascular plants located in the park. As Rickie glued and sewed herbarium sheets, I asked him to tell me about the Sandburg Home. I learned that Carl Sandburg, poet and essayist whom I’d always associated with the Midwest, moved to Flat Rock, North Carolina in 1945. Lilian Sandburg used the pastures around the antebellum house to raise champion goats, while Carl continued to write. The house, Rickie had learned, was built ca. 1838 by Christopher Gustavus Memminger, the first Secretary of the Treasury of the Confederate States of America. Memminger, a banker from Charleston, South Carolina, built this house in the mountains of North Carolina to escape the summer heat of the coast. The name “Memminger” rang a bell in my mind, and being neither a Sandburg scholar nor deeply informed about Confederate fiduciary matters, I was confident it was a botanical bell.

This study argues that a series of events of violent antislavery and southern perceptions of northern support for them caused white southerners to rethink the value of the Union and their place in it. John Brown’s raid at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, and northern expressions of personal support for Brown brought the Union into question in white southern eyes. White southerners were shocked when Republican governors in northern states acted to protect members of John Brown’s organization from prosecution in Virginia. Southern states invested large sums of money in their militia forces, and explored laws to control potentially dangerous populations such as northern travelling salesmen, whites “tampering” with slaves, and free African-Americans. Many Republicans endorsed a book by Hinton Rowan Helper which southerners believed encouraged antislavery violence and a Senate committee investigated whether an antislavery conspiracy had existed before Harpers Ferry. In the summer of 1860, a series of unexplained fires in Texas exacerbated white southern fear. As the presidential election approached in 1860, white southerners hoped for northern voters to repudiate the Republicans. When northern voters did not, white southerners generally rejected the Union.

Charles Babbage Institute Center for the History of Information Technology University of Minnesota, Minneapolis Copyright 2004, Charles Babbage Institute Sam Wyly Interview 6 December 2002 Abstract Wyly begins by recounting his childhood, and education prior to going to work for IBM’s Service Bureau Corporation, and then joining Honeywell as an area sales manager. He discusses how he left Honeywell to form University Computer Corporation (UCC), a firm that sold computer time, but transitioned into a software services business. Wyly explains his growing focus on computing and telecommunications, his formation of Datran, and his unsuccessful attempt to acquire Western Union. Much of the interview focuses on ongoing developments at UCC, the eventual sale of this firm to Computer Associates, his formation of Sterling Software, its acquisition of Informatics, the sale of Sterling, and his ideas on the future of information technology. Throughout Wyly’s discussion of UCC and Sterling, he elucidates upon his leadership philosophy, and the strategic, technical, operational, and financial management of these firms.
