The Kansas City Royals agreed to a three-year deal with Jeremy Guthrie that pays him $5 million on 2013, $11 million in 2014 and $9 million in 2015. He went 8-12 with a 4.76 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. Bailey went 13-10 with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. Latos went 14-4 with a 2.48 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. It’s a bit apples and oranges: Guthrie is a free agent; Bailey is arbitration-eligible for the second time, Latos for the first. But the point is starting pitching — even mediocre starting pitching — is expensive. SIX ADDED: The Reds added right-handers Carlos Contreras, Daniel Corcino, Curtis Partch and Josh Ravin, left-hander Ismael Guillon and outfielder Yorman Rodriguez to the roster in order to protect them from the Rule 5 draft.     MEDIA CLIPS – Oct. 29, 2018 Rockies decline Parra's option for 2019 Do-Hyoung Park | MLB.com | Oct. 30th, 2018 The Rockies have declined a $12 million club option on outfielder Gerardo Parra for the 2019 season, exercising a $1.5 million buyout on Tuesday to make him a free agent. Parra appeared in 142 games in 2018 but started only 97 of them as a platoon outfielder, primarily in left field. He hit .284/.342/.372 in the final year of a three-year, $27.5 million contract inked prior to the 2016 season. The two-time National League Gold Glove Award winner lost playing time toward the end of the regular season when David Dahl returned from injury and Matt Holliday made his return to Colorado in August. The left-handed-hitting Parra, 31, struggled to live up to expectations in his first year with Colorado in 2016, hitting .253 with a .671 OPS, but he rebounded in '17 with career highs in average (.309) and RBIs (71). He spent the first five-plus seasons of his 10-year career with the D-backs before brief stints with Milwaukee and Baltimore prior to his arrival in Denver. Still, the Rockies will entertain the idea of agreeing to a less expensive deal with Parra, who showed value as a pinch- hitter this season by batting .393/.433/.536 with one homer, one double and two walks in 30 plate appearances. Franchise mainstay Carlos Gonzalez and Holliday are also free agents again for the Rockies. Colorado has two starting outfield positions locked up for 2019 between Dahl and three-time All-Star Charlie Blackmon, who in April was extended through the '21 season with player options for '22 and '23.

    MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

Jensen Abstract A plethora of statistics have been proposed to measure the effectiveness of pitchers in Major League Baseball. While many of these are quite traditional (e.g., ERA, wins), some have gained currency only recently (e.g., WHIP, K/BB). Some of these metrics may have predictive power, but it is unclear which are the most reliable or consistent. We address this question by constructing a Bayesian random effects model that incorporates a point mass mixture and fitting it to data on twenty metrics spanning approximately 2,500 players and 35 years. Our model identifies FIP, HR/ 9, ERA, and BB/9 as the highest signal metrics for starters and GB%, FB%, and K/9 as the highest signal metrics for relievers. In general, the metrics identified by our model are independent of team defense.

With a 4-2 loss to the Marlins on Thursday night at Truist Park, the Braves’ magic number for clinching the National League’s No. 2 postseason seed remained at one. If they secure this spot, they would play the No. 7 seed, which means they likely won’t know their opponent until the still crowded NL playoff race ends on Sunday or Monday (if the Cardinals need to make up at least one game). One thing the Braves know is they will play the entirety of next week’s Wild Card Series in Atlanta. That has proven to be a good thing, as the team has spent the past couple months constructing an 18-9 home record, which ties them with the Dodgers for the NL’s best mark. Here are a few other things to keep an eye on: Get the kids ready Thursday began in encouraging fashion when Braves manager Brian Snitker announced Max Fried’s sore left ankle will not prevent him from starting Game 1 of the Wild Card Series. The day got even better as Ian Anderson held the Marlins scoreless through the first five innings, but he encountered some bad luck while allowing three unearned runs in the sixth. Now, the Braves will hope Kyle Wright also impresses as he makes his final regular-season start against the Red Sox on Friday.
