Document generated on 10/02/2021 5:08 p.m. Urban History Review Revue d'histoire urbaine Mapping Work in Early Twentieth-Century Montreal: A Rabbi, a Neighbourhood, and a Community Mary Anne Poutanen and Jason Gilliland Volume 45, Number 2, Spring 2017 Article abstract Rabbi Simon Glazer’s 1909 daily journal provides a window onto his role as an URI: https://id.erudit.org/iderudit/1051383ar orthodox rabbi of a largely Yiddish-speaking immigrant community, his DOI: https://doi.org/10.7202/1051383ar interactions with Jewish newcomers, the range of tasks he performed to augment the inadequate stipends he received from a consortium of five city synagogues See table of contents where he was chief rabbi, and the ways in which Jewish newcomers sought to become economically independent. Using a multidisciplinary methodology, including Historical Geographic Information Systems (HGIS), Glazer’s journal Publisher(s) offers a new lens through which to view and map the social geography of this community. Our study contributes to a growing body of literature on immigrant Urban History Review / Revue d'histoire urbaine settlement, which has shown that such clustering encouraged economic independence and social mobility. Characterized by a high degree of diversity in ISSN ethnicity and commerce, the St. Lawrence Boulevard corridor was an ideal location for Jewish newcomers to set down roots. We argue that the community 0703-0428 (print) served as a springboard for social mobility and that Simon Glazer played an 1918-5138 (digital) important role at a critical moment in its early development. It was on its way to becoming one of Canada’s most significant Jewish communities.

  • STAFF REPORT ACTION REQUIRED Intention to Designate Under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act – 1-95 Ellesmere Road
STAFF REPORT ACTION REQUIRED Intention to Designate under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act – 1-95 Ellesmere Road Date: June 15, 2012 Toronto Preservation Board To: Scarborough Community Council From: Director, Urban Design, City Planning Division Wards: Scarborough Centre – Ward 37 Reference P:\2012\Cluster B\PLN\HPS\SCC\September 11 2012\scHPS33 Number: SUMMARY This report recommends that City Council state its intention to designate the property at 1-95 Ellesmere Road under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act for its cultural heritage value. Located on the southeast corner of Ellesmere Road and Victoria Park Avenue, City Council listed the property on the City of Toronto Inventory of Heritage Properties in 2009. The property is being redeveloped with additional commercial buildings at the northwest corner of the site. As part of the development application, the property owners have agreed to the designation of the property under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act. Following research and evaluation, staff have determined that the property at 1-95 Ellesmere Road merits designation under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act, and meets Regulation 9/06, the criteria for municipal designation that is prescribed by the Province of Ontario. RECOMMENDATIONS The City Planning Division recommends that 1. City Council state its intention to designate the property at 1-95 Ellesmere Road under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act. Staff report of action – Intention to Designate – 1-95 Ellesmere Road 1 2. If there are no objections to the designation in accordance with Section 29(6) of the Ontario Heritage Act, City Council authorize the City Solicitor to introduce the bill in Council designating the property under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act.
