This week-Readings Epistle Romans 6:18-23 Gospel Mat 8:5-13 - 4th week after Pentecost Tone 3 Wishing Sr Nicodema Zemliak and Mrs M Stasiw a safe journey on their travels to Canada and for next 3 weeks ======Epistle Romans 6:18-23 6:18 Being made free from sin, you became bondservants of righteousness. 6:19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh, for as you presented your members as servants to uncleanness and to wickedness upon wickedness, even so now present your members as servants to righteousness for sanctification. 6:20 For when you were servants of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 6:21 What fruit then did you have at that time in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. 6:22 But now, being made free from sin, and having become servants of God, you have your fruit of sanctification, and the result of eternal life. 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Gospel Matt 8:5-13 8:5 When he came into Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking him, 8:6 and saying, “Lord, my servant lies in the house paralysed, grievously tormented.” 8:7 Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.” 8:8 The centurion answered, “Lord, I’m not worthy for you to come under my roof. Just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8:9 For I am also a man under authority, having under myself soldiers. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and tell another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and tell my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 8:10 When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to those who followed, “Most certainly I tell you, I haven’t found so great a faith, not even in Israel. 8:11 I tell you that many will come from the east and the west, and will sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the Kingdom of Heaven, 8:12 but the children of the Kingdom will be thrown out into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 8:13 Jesus said to the centurion, “Go your way. Let it be done for you as you have believed.” His servant was healed in that hour.

======Reflection of the Week

The complementarity of liturgical traditions The history of liturgies shows us how this can be so. Early in the 20th century Baumstark wrote his landmark book, “Comparative Liturgy”.

Both the Roman and the Byzantine traditions reflect the societies in which they were born. The Roman character was legal, simple and disciplined. It is now acknowledged by many scholars that the Roman Rite is a work of genius in its simplicity and directness of expression. The presidential prayers of the Roman Rite are a fine example of this. Eucharistic prayer 1 (Roman canon) is also a fine example of succinct liturgical expression. There was a series of German popes around the 11th century who brought the Gallican rite to Rome, and used elements of it. An example of this is the creed. This was totally foreign to the Roman Rite. It was introduced as at the request of the Holy Roman Emperor.

The Byzantine character on the other hand was expressive poetic and dramatic. It needed to express the fullness of theological thought in the form of liturgical prayer. The Byzantine Rite is acknowledged and praised for the synthesis of monastic and cathedral rites in its liturgical works. Theologically it is strongly pneumatic in contrast to the Christological emphasis in the Roman Rite. One of the big strengths of the Byzantine rite is its cultural adaptability. It very easily fits into the culture in which it finds itself. This is because it has a history of synthesising different elements such as the monastic, the cathedral, and elements from the Church of Jerusalem and the Church of Antioch Essentially, this is a liturgical tradition born in a multicultural environment. The only condition is a church has to be a cruciform floor plan. Other than that, there is no correct way to build a Byzantine church. This is a matter of local tradition. Even in Ukraine, each local region has churches which Page 1 have very different architecture, depending on economics and local material.

Pope John Paul 11, spoke of the universal church as breathing with both lungs. At no time like the present where communication for most people is both global and easy, it is necessary for us to understand not only ourselves, but also other societies and how people live. Pope John Paul recognised this, and wrote the Apostolic letter Orientale Lumen. The Church needs to breathe with both lungs both Eastern and Western, to be fully alive. Unless we experience both lungs of the church, it is somewhat questionable if we are truly Catholic . Rt Rev. Olexander Kenez

The pilgrimage to Zarvanytsia has ended: tens of thousands of faithful walked and prayed in the rain 15.07.13

On July 14, 2013, with a Pontifical , led by His Beatitude Sviatoslav (Shevchuk), UGCC Head, and the blessing of a monument to Pope Ivan Paul II, the Roman Pope, the All-Ukrainian and Youth Pilgrimage to Zarvanytsia ended. The Pilgrimage included faithful from all corners of Ukraine and abroad, 10 UGCC hierarchs, close to 300 priests and state representatives. A significant number of faithful walked to Zarvanytsia. The largest group, close to 1500 people, traditionally began their pilgrimage from the Cathedral in Ternopil. The pilgrims from Khmelnytsky Vicariate spent the longest time en route – almost a week. For the most part, young people walked; others came by buses, automobiles, and bicycles.

His Beatitude Sviatoslav greeted all guests and pilgrims who, in spite of the heavy rain, prayed at the Divine Liturgy. He imparted his Apostolic Blessing, thanked the organizers for their persistent work, thanked the priests who accompanied the pilgrims and heard confessions during the pilgrimage, and the authorities who assisted in organizing the pilgrimage.

This year the Pilgrimage was dedicated to the 1025th anniversary of the Baptism of Ukraine-Rus and the Year of Faith, which 2013 in UGCC was proclaimed. His Beatitude Sviatoslav touched on these themes in his sermon.

After the Liturgy there were requiem services held for the victims of the Ukrainian-Polish confrontations in Volyn in 1943 and the blessing of the monument to Pope John Paul II, the Roman pope, found near the Baths of Saint Anne.

His Excellency Archbishop and Metropolitan of Ternopil and Zboriv, Vasyliy (Semeniuk) as the vicar of the Marian Spiritual Center in Zarvanytsia, thanked the head of the church for the visit and gave him an of Zarvanytsia Mother of God. Ar cheparchy Press Service

If God is the light, then the light of life is faith in God.” His Beatitude Sviatoslav in Zarvanytsia 15.07.13

UGCC Head stated this during the night leading to July 11th after thousands of faithful marched with lit candles to the monument of the Mother of God on the place where she appeared. “Through the assistance of faith we unite ourselves with the living and eternal God, we become illuminated through him, we become his light, the bearers of God’s rays.”

The Primate appealed to the faithful to testify their faith through their actions, and then to raise high the candle holders: “Let us light our way through our faith; let us not be lost in the darkness; let us illuminate today our families, our Homeland – all the people who are next to us.” Then he asked each pilgrim to look closely at one’s candle and recall those people from whom they received their faith in God. “Let us look closely at our flames, because today we bear the responsibility that God forbid, in our hands and in our lives, this light of faith should ever burn out. Let us look closely at that light which we should carry within us.”

Since this year the Pilgrimage to Zarvanytsia is dedicated to the Year of Faith which coincides with the 1025th anniversary of the Baptism of Ukraine-Rus, His Beatitude Sviatoslav talked about the significance of the event of Baptism as a time of illuminating our people. “Be believers, be the Christians of that time when Almighty God gave us this greatest treasure of

Page 2 our land. And it was precisely the Christian faith itself that was the inner strength of our people for over a thousand years.” UGCC Head urged that we transfer the light of our faith to children, friends, and close ones, “that this light always continues.” “It is us that the Lord sends to illuminate their darkness… “that the people who sat in darkness” see the light exactly through our Church.”

The procession with the candles began by the parish church of Zarvanytsia which houses the Icon of the Zarvanytsia Mother of God. After the liturgy which was headed by Bishop Dmytro (Hryhorak), Eparch, the faithful carried the candles through the central street of the village, accompanied by the orchestra and singing the song “From the city of .” Then at the miraculous location, the bells rang and the pilgrims got closer to the monument of the Mother of god where the Major Archbishop together with bishops and clergy, began the Vespers to the Mother of God.
