Thank you for being bold and taking the time to share your work! Poetry Challenge Prompt #6 & Description Writing Prompt: Who you wit’? (crew love and shout outs!) Tools and ideas to help inspire your original poem Something to think about: Bernie Mac is the late, great, comedian known for shouting "who you wit?" at the top of the theme song for his self-entitled tv show, The Bernie Mac Show. Mac’s show was a family-centered comedy showcasing the laughter, trials, and tribulations of his sister’s children who he helped raise. It’s filled with heartfelt moments and life lessons while celebrating the love and triumph of the black family unit. ‘Who you wit’ is a roll call for those in your circle, crew, or clique that you represent and who represent (or rep.) you! Now that 2020 is coming to a close, it might be nice to think about the people in your life (or even someone that you’ve never met) who has been inspirational, motivating, supportive, resilient, energizing, talented, funny, or stylish etc. So, with this poetry prompt - the last one of the year - we invite you to shout out your clique and show some love to those special people in your life! So... who YOU wit’?!! Questions to ask yourself: ● Who in your life do you appreciate and value? ● What do you love most about your friends, loved ones, or community leaders? Science teacher, minister, store clerk, auntie, writer, dancer, bus driver...the list can go on! ● Who have you never met but would be a good fit for your clique or inner-circle? And why? ● What attributes or accomplishments about yourself are you most proud of? ● What attributes or character traits do you aspire to have for the new year? ● What are some adventures that you'd like to embark upon or goals you hope to achieve with the support of your crew in the future? Quote to think about: Song in relation to the topic: ❖ “Brown Skin Girl” by Beyonce, Blue Ivy, SAINt JHN, WizKid Poem in relation to the topic: An indirect or roundabout example of affirmation or celebration ❖ “Uncle Sam” by Joshua Abah Cheers to you and your crew, Jessica Hutchinson aka 3rd Eyesis DewMore Baltimore .

  • We're Taking Africa to the World
“We’re Taking Africa to the World”: Commercial Self- fashioning as a Vehicle for Collective Aspirations in the 21st Century JAANA SERRES “It’s finally cool to be an ‘African’” (Kaumbutho). This 2017 blog post by Kenyan poet Kimathi Kaumbutho echoed the performative claims heard throughout the African middle class in the wake of the changing narrative about “Africa,” from “The hopeless continent” (The Economist 2000) to “Africa rising” (The Economist 2011). Elements and signs of “Africanness” have indeed been increasingly featured in “global” popular culture, from clothing lines to films, and even the practice of capitalism is rebranded with “African traditional principles” through the Africapitalist and Ubuntu “economic philosophies.” But as suggested by Kaumbutho’s list of achievements “Africans can take pride in,” one cultural medium has proven particularly instrumental to this new wave of positive identification with “Africa”: Nigerian music. As Nigeria was arguably entering a post-oil era in the 2010s (Burns and Owen), its renewed popular music industry benefitted from the development of digital technology and the expression of corporate interest by telecom companies, retail brands, and foreign-educated young professionals, making it an exemplary manifestation of a new pan-Africanism founded on neoliberal aspirations (Shipley Living the Hiplife). Global professional services firm PwC announced that total revenue for Nigeria’s entertainment and media industry was expected to grow to US$8.1 billion in 2019, calling it the “fastest-expanding major market globally” (Oxford Business Group). However, only a very small share of this revenue occurs from the actual sale of cultural products (PwC 22).

  • Davido-Bio-November-2019.Pdf
DAVIDO Nearing the close of 2019, it’s hard for many to say they haven’t heard the name Davido, born David Adedeji Adeleke. The year marks another fete of huge achievements, from opening the year with a sold out date at London’s O2 Arena – making him the first solo African artist to do this – to creating mass hysteria across America with his 2018 single “Fall” which has gone on to have the longest run of an Afrobeats single on the Billboard charts, and saw it peak across Shazam as one of the most searched songs in the United States, and now gears up to release his second album A Good Time, all before a circuit of Christmas shows across Africa. If anything has framed where Davido currently is, it would his “childhood.” The youngest of five, growing up with his parents in Lagos, Nigeria, he was “exposed” to the world. Across summer breaks he would travel to visit his siblings in London and Atlanta, the latter being home to some of the artists that he today he can call his good friends – YoungThug, Gunna, Lil Baby – and the home to some of his favorite rappers growing up – Ludacris, Nelly – the sounds of noughties Hip Hop that he “loved.” It was most likely these trips that would drive a love for music that reflected global ambition. This exposure to the world, would in turn give Davido the opportunity to share with his University of Alabama friends music from Nigeria, that he knew if “given a chance” would go global.

NIELSEN MUSIC YEAR-END REPORT U.S. 2016 NIELSEN MUSIC YEAR-END REPORT U.S. 2016 Copyright © 2017 The Nielsen Company 1 Welcome to the annual Nielsen Music Year End Report, providing the definitive 2016 figures and charts for the music industry. And what a year it was! The year had barely begun when we were already saying goodbye to musical heroes gone far too soon. David Bowie, Paul Kantner, Glenn Frey, Leon Russell, Maurice White, Prince, Juan Gabriel, George Michael, Sharon Jones... the list goes on. And yet, while sad 2016 became a meme of its own, there is so much for the industry to celebrate. Music consumption is at an all-time high. Overall volume is up 3% over 2016, fueled by a 76% increase in on-demand audio streams, enough to offset declines in sales and return a positive year for the business. Nearly 650 solo artists, groups and collaborators appeared on the Top 200 Song Consumption chart in 2016, representing over 1,200 different songs. The rapid changes in technology and distribution channels are changing the way we discover and engage with content. Reaction times are shorter and current events ERIN CRAWFORD can have an instant impact on consumption. The last Presidential debate had SVP ENTERTAINMENT barely finished when there was an increase in streaming activity for Janet Jackson’s & GM MUSIC “Nasty.” The day after the news broke about Prince’s passing, over 1 million of his songs were downloaded. When a Florida teen set his #mannequinchallenge to “Black Beatles,” the song rocketed up the charts.
