Vorbereitung, Durchführung und Auswertung des Projekts Die Teilnahme des Englisch‐Leistungskurses erfolgte im Rahmen des 4. Kurssemesters zum Thema „Herausforderungen der Gegenwart“ mit dem Unterthema „Urban, Suburban and Rural Lifestyles.“ Im vorhergehenden Unterricht hatten sich die Schüler mit Fragen der Besiedlungsgeschichte der USA, der Raumerschließung und der Raumüberwindung auf dem nordamerikanischen Kontinent und der u.a. daraus abzuleitenden typischen Siedlungs‐ und Mobilitätsmuster beschäftigt. Unter anderem wurden in Kurzreferaten amerikanische Road Movies vorgestellt und auf ihre kulturellen Implikationen hin gedeutet (Freiheitsdrang, Initiation, Suche nach Identität etc.). Die Möglichkeit einer Vertiefung dieser Thematik am Beispiel des indischen Films Road, Movie traf auf großes Interesse der Schülerinnen und Schüler, wobei insbesondere von Bedeutung war, dass es sich bei Road, Movie nicht um einen Bollywood Film handelt, sondern um eine kleinere Produktion. Der Kinobesuch der Schülerinnen und Schüler erfolgte im Rahmen der Berlinale am 12.02. -

Every Good Boy Deserves Fun: One Dog’s Journey to the North “North...of all geographical terms it is the most personal, the most emotional, the most elusive. And perhaps the one which evokes the most powerful feelings” (Davidson, 2009) Davidson’s description of the powerful symbolism of the North as a destination, as a dream, echoes the romantic hyperbole of the early polar explorers searching for the last untamed wilderness in an increasingly industrial world; “the great adventure of the ice, deep and pure as infinity...nature itself in its profundity” (Nansen,1894). It establishes North as the direction of adventures. This chapter will examine The North as the site of mystery and adventure… one of the last wildernesses to explore but one which is paradoxically comfortable; populated only sparsely by oddly familiar characters. Through the examination of the author’s own short animation North, it will look at the use of narrative devices and media references to reflect on the symbolism of the North –and investigate the British relationship with it; not with the media construct of The North-South divide but rather with a broader, more complex idea of a conceptual, an imagined North-ness. This is seen in relation to certain stereotypes of iconic Britishness – our relationship with the sea, and its poetic evocation through the shipping forecast, with our dogs... and with our TV-facing sofas. Drawing on its author’s own travel experiences, and field research in Norway and Iceland, the short animation North can be viewed as a Road Movie, a Hero’s Journey, with Colin the dog as unlikely hero. -

Why Call them "Cult Movies"? American Independent Filmmaking and the Counterculture in the 1960s Mark Shiel, University of Leicester, UK Preface In response to the recent increased prominence of studies of "cult movies" in academic circles, this essay aims to question the critical usefulness of that term, indeed the very notion of "cult" as a way of talking about cultural practice in general. My intention is to inject a note of caution into that current discourse in Film Studies which valorizes and celebrates "cult movies" in particular, and "cult" in general, by arguing that "cult" is a negative symptom of, rather than a positive response to, the social, cultural, and cinematic conditions in which we live today. The essay consists of two parts: firstly, a general critique of recent "cult movies" criticism; and, secondly, a specific critique of the term "cult movies" as it is sometimes applied to 1960s American independent biker movies -- particularly films by Roger Corman such as The Wild Angels (1966) and The Trip (1967), by Richard Rush such as Hell's Angels on Wheels (1967), The Savage Seven, and Psych-Out (both 1968), and, most famously, Easy Rider (1969) directed by Dennis Hopper. Of course, no-one would want to suggest that it is not acceptable to be a "fan" of movies which have attracted the label "cult". But this essay begins from a position which assumes that the business of Film Studies should be to view films of all types as profoundly and positively "political", in the sense in which Fredric Jameson uses that adjective in his argument that all culture and every cultural object is most fruitfully and meaningfully understood as an articulation of the "political unconscious" of the social and historical context in which it originates, an understanding achieved through "the unmasking of cultural artifacts as socially symbolic acts" (Jameson, 1989: 20). -

Lauren Bliss, The Cinematic Body in View of the Antipodes: Philip Brophy’s Body Melt as the bad copy LAUREN BLISS The Cinematic Body in View of the Antipodes: Philip Brophy’s Body Melt as the bad copy ABSTRACT Through a wide ranging study of Philip Brophy's academic and critical writings on horror cinema, this essay considers how Brophy's theory of the spectator's body is figured in his only horror feature Body Melt (1993). Body Melt is noteworthy insofar as it poorly copies a number of infamous sequences from classical horror films of the 1970s and 1980s, a form of figuration that this essay will theorise as distinctly Antipodean. Body Melt will be related as an antagonistic 'turning inside out' of the subjectivity of the horror movie spectator, which will be read in the light of both the usurped subject of semiotic film theory, and the political aesthetics of Australian exploitation cinema. Philip Brophy’s Body Melt, made in 1993, is a distinctly antipodean film: it not only copies scenes from classic horror movies such as The Hills Have Eyes (1977), Alien (1979), The Thing (1982) and Scanners (1981), it also copies the scenes badly. Such copying plays on and illuminates the ‘rules’ of horror as the toying with and preying upon the spectator’s expectation of fear. Brophy’s own theory of horror, written across a series of essays in academic and critical contexts between the 1980s and the 1990s, considers the peculiarity of the spectator’s body in the wake of the horror film. It relates that the seemingly autonomic or involuntary response of fear or suspense that horror movies induce in a viewer is troubled by the fact that both film and viewer knowingly intend this response to occur from the very beginning. -

Television Sharknados and Twitter Storms: Cult Film Fan Practices in the Age of Social Media Branding Stephen William Hay A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the regulations for the degree of Master of Arts in Media Studies Victoria University of Wellington 2016 Abstract This thesis examines the Syfy channel’s broadcast of the television movie Sharknado and the large number of tweets that were sent about it. Sharknado’s audience engaged in cult film viewing practices that can be understood using paracinema theory. Paracinema engagement with cult films has traditionally taken place in midnight screenings in independent movie theatres and private homes. Syfy’s audience was able to engage in paracinematic activity that included making jokes about Sharknado’s low quality of production and interacting with others who were doing the same through the affordances of Twitter. In an age where branding has become increasingly important, Syfy clearly benefited from all the fan activity around its programming. Critical branding theory argues that the value generated by a business’s brand comes from the labour of consumers. Brand management is mostly about encouraging and managing consumer labour. The online shift of fan practices has created new opportunities for brand managers to subsume the activities of consumers. Cult film audience practices often have an emphasis on creatively and collectively engaging in rituals and activities around a text. These are the precise qualities that brands require from their consumers. Sharknado was produced and marketed by Syfy to invoke the cult film subculture as part of Syfy’s branding strategy. -

Mills Title: Hollywood: Bad cinema's bad ‘other’ Journal: Continuum: Journal of Media & Cultural Studies ISSN: 1030-4312 1469-3666 Year: 2010 Volume: 24 Issue: 5 Pages: 667-677 Abstract: Paracinema is widely defined in terms of its binary opposition to Hollywood cinema, making it Hollywood's 'bad other'. This proposes Hollywood as the opposite of bad, and therefore good. Underlying this conceptualization is a Hollywoodcentric approach to studying film in which the globally dominant cinema sets the standard by which all other cinemas are judged - and often to be found lacking. Paradoxically, cinemas seen to oppose Hollywood often tend to be valorized at the expense of the globally dominant cinema which is denigrated. Thus good becomes bad and bad is perceived as good. Hollywood, however, is seen to be doubly bad: not only is it accused of 'ruining all the cinemas in Europe', it is the 'significant bad other' from which all other cinemas need to be protected. In this scenario, cinemas are imagined to possess rigid and impermeable boundaries preserving distinctions of taste. These borders supposedly keep Hollywood conservative and immune from the ideas, images and sounds of bad cinema while those erected around bad cinema are thought to keep Hollywood out and protect paracinema's essence and 'otherness'. This article proposes replacing the notion of fixed cinematic borders within a Hollywoodcentric screenscape with that of a chaotic, fluid screenscape in which global cultural flows carry 'badness' between cinemas in a transnational imaginary. -

In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Abstract Classic Indonesian exploitation films (originally produced, distributed, and exhibited in the New Order’s Indonesia from 1979 to 1995) are commonly negligible in both national and transnational cinema contexts, in the discourses of film criticism, journalism, and studies. Nonetheless, in the 2000s, there has been a global interest in re-circulating and consuming this kind of films. The films are internationally considered as “cult movies” and celebrated by global fans. This thesis will focus on the cultural traffic of the films, from late 1970s to early 2010s, from Indonesia to other countries. By analyzing the global flows of the films I will argue that despite the marginal status of the films, classic Indonesian exploitation films become the center of a taste battle among a variety of interest groups and agencies. The process will include challenging the official history of Indonesian cinema by investigating the framework of cultural traffic as well as politics of taste, and highlighting the significance of exploitation and B-films, paving the way into some findings that recommend accommodating the movies in serious discourses on cinema, nationally and globally. -

II Abstract In 2004, annual Australian viewership of Australian cinema, regularly averaging below 5%, reached an all-time low of 1.3%. Considering Australia ranks among the top nations in both screens and cinema attendance per capita, and that Australians’ biggest cultural consumption is screen products and multi-media equipment, suggests that Australians love cinema, but refrain from watching their own. Why? During its golden period, 1970-1988, Australian cinema was operating under combined private and government investment, and responsible for critical and commercial successes. However, over the past thirty years, 1988-2018, due to the detrimental role of government film agencies played in binding Australian cinema to government funding, Australian films are perceived as under-developed, low budget, and depressing. Out of hundreds of films produced, and investment of billions of dollars, only a dozen managed to recoup their budget. The thesis demonstrates how ‘Australian national cinema’ discourse helped funding bodies consolidate their power. Australian filmmaking is defined by three ongoing and unresolved frictions: one external and two internal.
