150 High Street Sevenoaks Kent TN13 1XE Francisco Valcarcel, President World Boxing Organization 1056 Munoz Rivera Avenue San Juan 00927 Puerto Rico BY EMAIL 6 October 2017 Dear President Valcarcel Notice of Complaint WBO Heavyweight Championship – Joseph Parker v Hughie Fury – 23 September 2017 Please accept this letter as a Complaint submitted to you as President of the WBO pursuant to Article 3 of the WBO Appeal Regulations. The Complainants and interested parties are: Boxer Hughie Lewis Fury Address Hollybank Park, Warburton Bridge Road, Rixton, Warrington WA3 6HC Domicile England Nationality British Telephone Number 07788 874 788 Email Address [email protected] Mailing Address As above Hennessy Sports Worldwide Ltd, 150 High Street, Sevenoaks, Kent, TN13 1XE England Tel: + 44 (0) 203 146 6000 Office Email: [email protected] www.hennessysports.com Promoter Mick Hennessy of Hennessy Sports Worldwide Limited Address 150 High Street, Sevenoaks, Kent TN13 1XE Domicile England Nationality British Telephone Number 0203 146 6050 Email Address [email protected] Mailing Address As above The Complainants and interested parties as referred to above are the challenger and promoter of the WBO World Heavyweight Championship bout that took place at the Manchester Arena on Saturday 23 September 2017. You may consider that Joseph Parker and Duco Promotions Limited are also interested parties. The Complainants consider that the scoring of two of the judges of the bout, John Madfis and Terry O’Connor, do not properly or correctly reflect the contest that took place during the above mentioned bout. Both judges scored the contest in favour of Joseph Parker by 118 to 110 points as compared to the other judge, Rocky Young, who scored the bout as a draw at 114 each (which we still consider to be extremely generous towards Joseph Parker). It is also clear from the reactions and expressions of Joseph Parker, David Higgins and Team Parker when the decision was announced that they were extremely surprised to have been awarded the decision in contrast to Team Fury who were confidently celebrating before the decision as they felt they had clearly and easily won the contest. A member of Hennessy Sports management team were also made aware that John Madfis has medical issues which affect his memory, such that he should not be permitted to judge boxing bouts, particularly bouts of this importance. You will also be aware of the issues regarding the appointment of both the referee and the judges leading up to the bout (and particularly the complaints and comments raised both privately and then in the final week publicly and via the media by executives of Duco Promotions) and the Complainants consider that this caused the judges to be subject to a substantial amount of duress and pressure in judging the bout and as a consequence they did not judge the bout fairly or correctly. It should not go unnoticed that Rocky Young was the only judge not to be criticised or changed in the lead up to the bout. The Complainant’s complaint that the bout was not judged correctly has been confirmed by many leading experts and journalists in the world of boxing. Attached as a Schedule to this letter is a list of articles and comments made after the bout by leading boxing experts on both sides of the Atlantic, Ring Magazine (the bible of boxing) and UK trade paper boxing news, both scored Fury as a clear winner. It is patently clear from the comments and analysis made that the scoring of the judges did not reflect what took place in the ring on the evening of 23 September. We have also been advised that after the contest Joseph Parker admitted to Tyson Fury that he thought that he had lost the bout as he didn’t think that he had “done enough”. In addition,David Higgins from Duco Promotions looking extremely relieved was telling all our team in Hughie Furys dressing room immediately after the bout that he thought "Hughie was going to get the decision”. We therefore respectfully request that the President makes an order that this contest be rescored by five independent judges by assessing video coverage of the bout. In the event that you decide not to order the Error! Unknown document property name. bout to be rescored, then in the alternative we respectfully request that you order a rematch in relation to the bout which should take place within the next six months. We are aware that similar orders regarding the rescoring of a contest have been made in the past and in particular we would refer you to the WBO World Welterweight Championship held on 2 July 2017 between Manny Pacquiao v. Jeff Horn in which the judging of this World Championship came under intense public and media scrutiny. The WBO subsequently used five judges from different nations to rescore the fight on video without any sound and we respectfully suggest that the same order should be made in relation to the above mentioned bout. More recently, September 16, 2017 inept scoring of Gennady Golovkin’s World Middleweight Unification against Canelo Alvarez saw the fight end controversially in a draw after the judges delivered irrational scores of 114-114, 115-113 (Golovkin) and 118-110 (Canelo) that prompted worldwide outrage. Subsequently, judge Adelaide Byre, who gave the wide score, has been temporarily stood down by the Nevada Athletic State Commission. The WBC are the only organisation to have ordered a rematch to date. Should you require any further information then please do let us know. We look forward to hearing from you.
