  • Is the Greek Crisis One of Supply Or Demand?
YANNIS M. IOANNIDES Tufts University CHRISTOPHER A. PISSARIDES London School of Economics Is the Greek Crisis One of Supply or Demand? ABSTRACT Greece’s “supply” problems have been present since its acces- sion to the European Union in 1981; the “demand” problems caused by austerity and wage cuts have compounded the structural problems. This paper discusses the severity of the demand contraction, examines product market reforms, many of which have not been implemented, and their potential impact on com- petitiveness and the economy, and labor market reforms, many of which have been implemented but due to their timing have contributed to the collapse of demand. The paper argues in favor of eurozone-wide policies that would help Greece recover and of linking reforms with debt relief. reece joined the European Union (EU) in 1981 largely on politi- Gcal grounds to protect democracy after the malfunctioning political regimes that followed the civil war in 1949 and the disastrous military dictatorship of the years 1967–74. Not much attention was paid to the economy and its ability to withstand competition from economically more advanced European nations. A similar blind eye was turned to the economy when the country applied for membership in the euro area in 1999, becom- ing a full member in 2001. It is now blatantly obvious that the country was not in a position to compete and prosper in the European Union’s single market or in the euro area. A myriad of restrictions on free trade had been introduced piecemeal after 1949, with the pretext of protecting those who fought for democracy.

Editorial Welcome to the IALS Student Law Review Tuğçe Yalçin Welcome to the COVID-19 Special Issue of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies' Student Law Review (ISLRev). The COVID-19 pandemic threw not only the world into a serious shock to all intents and purposes but caused an historic decline in economic outputs in many countries and raised numerous questions for states and the societal functioning in general. The severe and challenging situation also ushered in a rethink of our old habits and seeming obviousnesses such as meeting friends or working in shared environments. It reminds us about what is really essential in life, or simply: recalling our humanity and reality – our natural limits of necessity. In this COVID-19 Special Issue, we will be reflecting on how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected local legal systems, the introduction of legal regimes to confront the new realities, economies, governments and the society at large. We are pleased to introduce the following articles of this COVID-19 Special Issue of the ISLRev: Dr. Marijana Opashinova Shundovska discusses whether emergency measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic are a threat to the democracy by analysing the case of North Macedonia. This new world order ‘Covidism’, both autocratic and liberal, proved to be more dangerous in the long run than the virus which took thousands of lives and infected millions of people worldwide. The ‘COVID-19 victimisation’ and ‘de-democratisation’ made representative houses revert to old emergency situations, conveying the lead to the executives to carry on the entire decision-making process, putting into question their definition as pillar institutions in the systems of representative democracy.

  • Turkey's New Moves in the Eastern Mediterranean
Turkey’s New Moves in the Eastern Mediterranean by Dr. George N. Tzogopoulos BESA Center Perspectives Paper No. 2,110, August 1, 2021 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: In July 2021, Israel expressed full support to the Republic of Cyprus in the wake of the unilateral reopening of the Varosha coastline by Turkey. Last year, it also showed solidarity with Athens during Greek-Turkish tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean. While the tripartite partnership is progressing, Ankara is seeking to expand its footprint in the region and is pursuing a two-state solution in Cyprus. It is also applying a new foreign policy methodology to Greece while remaining adamant in its demands. Turkey’s new policy vis-à-vis Cyprus, based on a two-state solution, is being heavily criticized by the international community. In a press statement, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken expressed American support for a Cypriot-led comprehensive settlement to reunify the island as a bizonal, bicommunal federation. Also, the decision by Ankara to reopen the coastline of Varosha, a city on the eastern edge of the island that was abandoned after the 1974 military invasion, united the 15 members of the UN Security Council in condemnation. On July 23, the Security Council reaffirmed the status of Varosha as set out in previous resolutions, including 550 (1984) and 789 (1992). Israel is committed to strengthening its collaboration with both Greece and Cyprus. The July phone call between presidents Isaac Herzog and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan did not prevent Jerusalem from expressing deep concern about Turkish announcements regarding Cyprus. FM Yair Lapid hosted his counterparts Nikos Dendias on July 21 and Nikos Christodoulides on July 27.

[email protected] Szerkesztésért felelős személy: CHen Xin Kiadásért felelős személy: Huang Ping china-cee.eu 2017/01 The New Greek President The first female President of Greece undertook its duties in a very difficult period for the Greek economy and society, in March 2020. Katerina Sakellaropoulou, the former President of the Council of State, was the personal choice of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to succeed Prokopis Pavlopoulos. Pavlopoulos played a constructive role in the summer of 2015, when Greece’s stay in the Eurozone was jeopardized, but is considered a politician with close ties to SYRIZA by most New Democracy members, even the Kostas Karamanlis’ wing which largely supports him. Mitsotakis nominated a woman to become the President to make a symbolic gesture in line with European guidelines and send a message of unity to Greek citizens. Chinese President Xi Jinping immediately congratulated Sakellaropoulou after her election. The new President of Greece, Katerina Sakellaropoulou was sworn in on 13 March 2020. As in mid-March the government ordered a lockdown to fight against COVID-19, the ceremony was only attended by a small number of people. In particular, instead of 1000 people who would have been able to participate under normal circumstances, 150 people were present in the plenary. Political parties, for example, were represented by the heads of their parliamentary group.
