Winners of the ISPS Handa Halberg Awards Decade Champion announced 25 March 2021 As a key sponsor of the Halberg Foundation (the Foundation), we would like to express our warmest congratulations to the winners of the ISPS Handa Halberg Awards Decade Champion. Named after Olympic champion Sir Murray Halberg (ONZ), the Halberg Awards is the country's pre-eminent event to honour and celebrate New Zealand sporting excellence over the last decade by New Zealand athletes, teams and coaches. The award winners were announced at a gala dinner on Wednesday 24 March at Spark Arena and broadcast live on Sky Sport. The Buddle Findlay Coach of the Decade award was presented to canoe coach Gordon Walker, who led Lisa Carrington to become the first New Zealand female to win multiple medals at a single Olympics in Rio in 2016. Walker also coached four boats to win gold at the 2017 Canoe Sprint World Championships and Carrington to her gold medal in the K1 200m at the same event. He also coached the New Zealand’s women’s team to five medals at the 2018 Canoe Sprint World Championships in Portugal and Carrington to win the K1 200m. Walker is pictured below with partners Lisette Hood and Sherridan Cook. Finalists for the award included all previous winners of the Coach of the Year award from the last decade: Ricki Herbert 2010 (football) Sir Graham Henry 2011 (rugby) Richard (Dick) Tonks 2012 (rowing) Sir Steve Hansen 2013 and 2015 (rugby) Anthony Peden 2014 (cycling) Gordon Walker 2016, 2017 and 2018 (canoe racing) Dame Noeline Taurua 2019 (netball).

Leander New s Leander Club Newslette r Winter 2010 Totally Oarsome… Leander has had another very strong year in 2010. We have produced winning crews at every level and with the World Championships less than a week away, there is promise of yet more success for Leander athletes and coaches in New Zealand. These Championships are two months later than usual to fit in with the New Zealand summer, and as a result it seems strange to be reflecting on the season thus far when it is not yet finished. One of the positives of this situation is that it reduces the amount of winter training that many of us will have to do for the 2011 season! The most recent addition to the team is Beijing silver medallist Debbie Flood, who following a training camp in Germany has been confirmed as competing in the women’s quad - the boat in which she has twice won silver at successive Olympic Games. Leander won four trophies in total, and in my first year as Captain it was exciting to experience the nerves and excitement of the Regatta as a spectator.

Very good rowing readBy CustomerGood books on rowing are few and far between. Halberstamrsquo;s the Amateurs and Topolski's True Blue being notable exceptions. If you like autobiographies Pinsent's and Foster's are both good. Murray and Bond's new book is on par with the latter two and very much deserves five stars. It's an engaging read that moves along at a decent pace and does an insightful job of showing the reader the life (including challenges) of a an elite endurance athlete. Both men come across as interesting characters, albeit with very different personalities and it is fascinating to see how together they overcame some fairly substantial disappointments to form what is arguably the greatest rowing crew of all time. The relationships with their various coaches are also covered and it is interesting to see how they achieved the results they did under the different styles. Two very minor criticisms. The finals chapters were written shortly after the Rio final and as such don't provide much in the way of retrospective observation, and as a rowing fan it would have been really interesting to have seen a table of their 2k erg times through the years.

Many were wearing REID NZL T-shirts and almost all had on bushy wigs to emulate Reid’s mop of blond hair, although the 24-year-old cut his hair in anticipation of the hot and humid Tokyo weather. Unfortunately, the New Zealand team were well adrift of the leaders after the first leg completed by Ainsley Thorpe, with Reid running the second of the four legs.
