Simon Franglen SIMON FRANGLEN BIO Simon Franglen is a Grammy-winning and Golden Globe-nominated composer, arranger and music producer. He served as arranger and synth programmer on scores for four of the top grossing films of all time (Avatar, Titanic, Skyfall and Spectre), and his credits include six of the best-selling pop albums of all time. He received a Grammy Award for Record of the Year for his production on the smash hit “My Heart Will Go On” from James Cameron's Titanic, and received Golden Globe, Grammy Award and World Soundtrack Award nominations for co- writing and producing the theme song “I See You” from Cameron’s Avatar. Upcoming projects include co-composing the score for director Antoine Fuqua’s The Magnificent Seven, which he completed following the tragic death of his long-time colleague and friend, composer James Horner. He and Horner collaborated for the past several years on the music for Disney World’s upcoming Avatar World, a highly-anticipated, immersive attraction scheduled to open in 2017. He has written music for Terrence Malick’s astonishing Voyage of Time to be released late 2016. Other projects include a groundbreaking immersive suite for four orchestras, choir and bells to be premiered in 3D at the top of the 2000ft high Shanghai Tower at the end of 2016. Franglen has worked for decades as an arranger, programmer and producer with many of Hollywood’s leading composers including John Barry, Howard Shore, Thomas Newman, Alan Silvestri and most notably James Horner, with whom he worked for nearly twenty years. Franglen contributed to projects as diverse as creating the disturbing electronica for David Fincher’s seminal Se7en, producing the vocals for Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge and scoring One Direction’s chart topping 3D concert film This is Us. With over four hundred music credits, Franglen also has worked with an array of pop, RnB and classical artists including Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Celine Dion, Luciano Pavarotti and Madonna. He had a very successful decade-long relationship with David Foster. During the 1990’s, Franglen’s credits included a quarter of the US Billboard No.1 records during a single five-year period. Franglen is a visiting professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and a Guest Professor at the China National Academy of Art. DESCRIPTORS *Bands (Music); Content Analysis; Discographies; *Music; Musicians; *Popular Culture IDENTIFIERS Media History; Music Ensembles; *Rock and Roll; *Rock Music ABSTRACT Based on the argument that (contrary to critical opinion) the musicians in the various bands associated with Bosstown Sound were indeed talented, cohesive individuals and that the bands' lack of renown was partially a result of ill-treatment by record companies and the press, this paper traces the development of the Bosstown Sound from its beginnings in the nightclubs of Boston in 1967 to its end in 1969. In addition, the paper provides complete discographies, including critical commentary, of records produced by bands associated with the Bosstown Sound. The bands of the Bosstown Sound include: The Apple Pie Motherhood Band, The Bagatelle, The Beacon Street Union, Bo Grumpus, Eagle, Earth Opera, Eden's Children, Sure Looks Real, The Ill Wind, Jolliver Arkansaw, Orpheus, Phluph, Puff, and Ultimate Spinach. • "The Culture of the 1970S Reflected Through Bruce Springsteen's Music"
"The Culture of the 1970s Reflected Through Bruce Springsteen's Music" Senior Honors Thesis Presented To The Honors College Written By Melody S. Jackson Spring, 1983 Advised By Dr. Anthony Edmonds .;,- () -- "The Culture of the 1970s Reflected Through Bruce Springsteen's Music" I have seen the future of rock and roll and it is Bruce Springsteen. Jon Landau the advent of Bruce Springsteen, who made rock and roll a matter of life and death again, seemed nothing short of a miracle to me . Bruce Springsteen is the last of rock's great innocents. Dave Marsh Whether these respected critics see Springsteen as the future of great rock or the end of it, they do regard him with respect for his ability to convey the basic feeling of rock. And they are not alone in this opinion. From the start of his career, Springsteen has received a great deal of critical acclaim. This acclaim, in part because of his performing ability, seems quite fitting since his shows usually last for two and a half hours and often continue for four or even five hours. Relentlessly, he gives of himself to the thousands of fans -- his cult following -- who have come to see their own Rock Messiah. Upon analysis of the lyrics of Springsteen's songs, lyrics which he has written, one sees that he has a unique talent f()r reflecting the situation of the lower-middle class which he grew up in. In fact, in all of the albums he has released up to this time, he has written about the culture of the lower-middle class.

  • Elvisbrucefeaturefromstonepo
How an encounter that never happened might have helped to change history if it had By Shawn Poole Ever since he was a child, Bruce Springsteen has been strongly influenced by the artistry of Elvis Presley. Over the years, the “E Street”/”Elvis” connection has remained strong. Most recently, Springsteen participated along with E Street Band members Nils Lofgren and Patti Scialfa in the Elvis: Viva Las Vegas television special (now on DVD in the U.S., where it hit #1 on the Billboard DVD sales chart), and its accompanying soundtrack album. E Streeters Garry Tallent and Max Weinberg also were on hand at this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony to induct Elvis’ original drummer and bassist, D.J. Fontana and the late Bill Black. Presley was only forty-two years old when his life tragically ended. “They found him slumped up against the drain,” Bruce Springsteen would later sing of his fallen idol, “with a whole lot of trouble running through his veins; Bye-bye, Johnny; Johnny, bye-bye; You didn’t have to die; you didn’t have to die.” While Elvis’ premature decline and death did absolutely nothing to stop his immense cultural influence, it did rob the world of many more years of music from this great artist. It also ensured that Bruce Springsteen would never get another chance to meet the man who initially inspired his own musical career. (He had two chances: one famous unofficial chance when he jumped the wall at Graceland in 1976 and one not-as-famous in 1977 when local concert promoters offered Springsteen an official chance to meet Elvis backstage before his final Philadelphia concert.) But what if Bruce had gotten to meet Elvis before August 16, 1977? Might things have turned out any differently for either or both of them, as well as the many other lives they affected? In this work of speculative fiction, Shawn Poole ponders the possibilities, poignantly reminding us of the promise and potential that tragically disappeared in that long ago summer.

  • L. Kent Wolgamott: Digging T. Rex on Their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction
EDITOR'S PICK ON THE BEAT L. Kent Wolgamott: Digging T. Rex on their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction L. Kent Wolgamott Nov 12, 2020 SALE! Subscribe for $1/mo. I’d forgotten how much I like T. Rex until I was watching the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction show on HBO on Sunday night. Now available on HBO On Demand and streaming on HBO Max, the show is the COVID- 19 replacement for the usual induction ceremony. Ordinarily, honorees are introduced by a celebrated peer, deliver what passes for an acceptance speech and play a few songs with a jam session to wrap up the evening. That wasn’t possible this year. So the 35th class went into the Rock Hall with short films sketching the lives and careers of the inductees, capped by a remotely filmed acceptance speech. While it was missing the music, which is often the best part of the ceremony, the video version in some ways worked better than the live, in-person ceremony in providing looks at the honorees — Depeche Mode, the Doobie Brothers, Whitney Houston, Nine Inch Nails, The Notorious B.I.G., T. Rex and managers Irving Azoff and Jon Landau — that illuminated why they were deserving of induction. That, sadly, is likely most needed for T. Rex, which, in 2020, is largely unknown or forgotten in the U.S. You have likely heard the British band’s only American hit “Get It On (Bang a Gong).” But Marc Bolan and his band were never U.S. rock stars. When Bolan took out the electric guitar and transformed his hippie folk duo Tyrannosaurus Rex into a rock ’n’ roll boogie band, T.

    60) Murder Incorporated So the comfort that you keep's a gold-plated, snub-nosed .32 Not quite sure why this doesn’t get more plays. It is a real belter, pumps you up, would be a great show opener. Would have been right at home on Darkness. Has you rocking from go to woe. Bruce leaves nobody behind on this and you’re taken on a six minute power ride, and there is no time for stopping. This was initially recorded back in 1982 with the Born In The USA sessions, but did not see an official release until the release of greatest hits in 1995. From the get go it sounds like classic Springsteen. The thud of Max’s drums, followed with the intro of the guitars. The organs feature prominently too. And for the next six minutes, you feel compelled to tap your foot to the beat and fill with anger, because let’s face it, this song doesn’t exactly put a smile on your face. That’s not to say songs need to have a happy vibe about them to enjoy them. The sax solo feels like it’s just been shoved in for the sake of it. But somehow Bruce managed to make it work. Nils’ wows us with a blistering solo before the bridge and we are treated to one final verse and raspy Bruce belts out a “I could tell you were just frustrated livin with Murder Incoporated.” Bruce struts his stuff and nearly sets his guitar on fire, Stevie throws a punch back (much like the Saint duel at Hammersmith), but Bruce shows why he’s Boss.
