However, as the game wore on, the Badger offense frustrated the depleted Bruin defense. Wisconsin rushed for 123 yards in the second half. On defense, the Badgers crowded the line of scrimmage and held Foster to just seven yards on the ground in the second half. After Wisconsin closed to 20-14 on a late third quarter scoring pass, the Bruins responded by moving to the Badger 32. On fourth- and-4, a fake field goal attempt was thwarted when Griffith, after taking a handoff from holder , was stopped 2 yards short of the first down. With Thomas and Anderson now on the sidelines, Wisconsin drove 70 yards in 12 plays for the lead score on its first possession of the fourth quarter. The Bruins could not manage a first down on their subsequent possession and the teams traded punts. On its next opportunity, McEwan moved the Bruins into Badger territory. On the drive, Mitchell grabbed his ninth pass of the day for 180 receiving yards to set a Sun Bowl game record. However, on fourth-and 3 from the Wisconsin 40-yard line, Jon Dubravac could not hang on to a McEwan toss and the ball went over with just over two minutes left on the game clock. The depleted Bruin defense, which became just the third team to limit Michael Bennett to less than 100 yards, responded to the challenge and forced a Wisconsin punt with about one minute remaining in the game. However, on UCLA’s first play from scrimmage, what turned out to be McEwan’s final pass of the day was tipped, misdirected and intercepted to seal the Freddie Mitchell (3) Bruins’ fate. McEwan played well in his relief role, but did not take the Bruins into the endzone on the day. He did manage to complete 12 of 18 passes for 135 yards.
