AC. FAMILY OF IGNATIUS HAGAN OF THOMAS

AC. Ignatius b 1686, Charles Co.97 d 1765, Charles Co. 1m Rebecca Lowe probably in the early 1700's98 d/o Major John Lowe and Rebecca ?Wright?99 2m Magdalen Thompson d/o John Thompson and Mary Green100

97 On Aug 13, 1734, Ignatius Hagan of Charles Co. made a deposition that he was forty-eight years old and the neighbor of Thomas and Mary Bowling of Charles Co. Page 528 [of what?]

98 She was not 15 years of age when her father, Major John Lowe made his will on May 30, 1698. Rebecca Wright (sister of Tabitha Wright Mills, wife of Thos.. Blandford, I) then married Thos. Mudd, Jr.

99 From The Mudd Family, p 1478: "John Lowe is said to have been b in England in 1600 and was Major of the colonial Troops of St. Mary's Co. He married Rebecca (surname not certain, but possibly Wright). His issue were: 1. John 2d of Prince George Co.; d 1774; m Mary Hawkins 2. Elizabeth m (probably) Henry Mudd 3. Eleanor 4. Rebecca The children of John 2nd is also given. Cf. also National Genealogical Society Quarterly, March 1963, Lowe of Denby, County Derby, England and Maryland, Crowther, G. Rodney III, esp. p 42." Deed PG Co. Liber I, p 42 - 13 Aug 1720: Ignatius Hagan and Rebecca, his wife d/o Major John Lowe, dec'd of SM Co., of the one part and Thos. Addison of PG witnesseth that Major John Low late of St. M. dec'd did by Will beq. to dau. Rebecca a tract of land surveyed for Wm. Hutchison, late of PG called "The Garden" 150A in Chas. Co but now in PG with Thos. Hagan (signed) Ignat "X" & Rebecca "R". From Maguire File. Martha Pikell gives Wright as the maiden name of Rebecca who married John Lowe and states that she married secondly Thomas Mudd II. Pikell MSS, p 2. Also she says: Major John Lowe was Major of the colonial Troops of St. Mary's Co. His will was dated 1698 and probated 1701; it names his wife Rebecca, his son, John, and his daughters Elizabeth, Alie, Eleanor, and Rebecca (liber 21:208)

100 From the notes of Harry Wright Newman in the archives of Charles Co. Community College: He gives the parents of Magdalen Thompson and says that she was not married at the time of her father's will was proved (?) 2 Mar 1733; Liber 22, f 66, Hall of Records. Abstract of the Will of Ignatius Hagan101

My wife Magdalen Hagan, ex.,to inherit all the land joining the plantation and the plantation I now dwell on: 100 A of "Good Intent" and after her decease to my son William; 100 A on north side of a road called Parran Rd to Magdalen as long as she lives and after her decease to my loving son Hagan, my son Thomas Hagan the plantation he now lives on and 100 A adjoining it; which I bought of John Baggot, my son Joseph Hagan the remaining part called Good Intent. My son James Hagan: one cow and calf daughter Mary Hagan and daughter Sarah Hagan: one negro called "Sue" daughter Elizabeth Speak: one shilling of sterling daughter Eleanor Wheeler daughter Ann Blanford: one shilling of sterling my wife Magdalen Hagan personal estate. Witnesses: Ign Smith, James Hagan, and Basil Hagan. His executrix, Magdalen filed an inventory on Nov 10, 1765, and she registered the disbursements in the Balance Book, Liber 5, f 68 A&B, James Hagan and Wm. Thompson, securities.

Note: Son John is not mentioned unless he is William.

101From Annie Walker Burns' Abstracts of Wills in Charles and St. Mary's Counties, p 87: Will of Ignatius Hagan of Charles Co., L 33, f 421-2) is dated 26 Mar 1761, proved 15 Oct 1765. Children: A. William Is he the same as John who is not mentioned in the will? Reason: John with his mother Magdalen sell what he calls "dwelling plantation of my father Ignatius" which seemingly William was suppose to receive according to his father's will. 103 "James of Ignatius" is listed 1778 Census of Md, Chas. Co. Bryantown Hundred; also in 1790 Census of Chas Co.: males, 1 16+, 1 16-; females 3. A second "James" is also listed in 1778 census; who is he? The 1800 "Census" of Ky lists three James Hagan's plus James A(quilla?) in Nelson Co. Martha Pikell gathered the following information on a James living on Froman Creek: Deed Book 6, 216: 1 Aug 1803!, Nelson Co., Ky: Peter Hahn and Peggy, his wife to Mary Hagan, widow; Julian and Mary Magdalen Hagan, heirs to James Hagan, dec'd, for £50, current money, for 40 A. of land in Nelson Co on the waters of Froman Creek, being part of tract where sd Hahn now lives. Inventory of James Hagan: $107.80, appraisers took oath 19 Nov 1813!; it was recorded 19 Dec 1814. Mrs. Pikell concludes that "since we have no record of any other James dying there in 1800-1820 period, this would refer to Mary's husband." James is on the Nelson Co. tax lists from 1796 to 1801, and then Mary in 1802, 1813 to 1815 with 40 A., but no land in 1816, and she does not appear on the rolls at all in 1817. Since nothing indicates she sold the land, one can suppose that when Mary Magdalen married Aquilla (son of Basil, who had property on the east side of Froman Creek), he farmed the land. From a letter by Martha S. Pikell to Celia Keeling.

104 From Martha Pikell's mss: "At court on 27 Dec 1766, Mary Hagan, ca 50 yrs. swore that seven yrs. ago she lived at the home of Mr. Wm Simpson for about 10 months (William Simpson 1700-1784, s/o Thomas and Mary Matthews Simpson; his widow was Rachel)." Is this the same Mary? In the 1790 Census of Prince George Co. a Mary Hagan is listed with 3 females in her house and no one else.

105 Cf.. Martha Pikell's work on the Blandford family in the Blandford file of the Nelson Co. Library. From another note in BTS file by Mrs. Pikell: Ann Hagan, d/o Ignatius, Will 1765, may also have been a Blandford's wife, Thomas, as she is so listed in Will Liber 33, f 421-422, Chas. Co. Thomas Blandford who died in Chas. Co, prior to 4 Mar 1793 left a wife Ann, so named in Chas. Co. Land Records L #4, f 45-47. This Thomas and Ann Blanford are parents of Rebecca who married Wm Wight and went to Wash. Co. c 1800. He and is sister Monica Hagan were children of John Blandford who married twice: Rebecca ----- who was alive in 1754 and 2nd wife was Elizabeth ----- whom many think was also a Hagan since they had a son named Hagan Blandford. 106 For the family of Joseph Hagan, see Tim O'Rourke, Maryland Catholics on the Frontier, pp 549ff. He swore allegiance in Chas. Co. 1778. He is perhaps the Joseph listed in the 1783 of Chas. Co. Dist. 3 with 8 white inhabitants. In 1792 he disposed of his property and migrated to Nelson Co. By 1803 he had moved to the Spanish dominion west of the Mississippi where he received a land grant of 640 acres. Presumably he is the "Joseph Hagan" listed in the 1790 Census of Prince George Co. MD with 4 males over 16, 3 males under 16, 4 females, and 5 slaves. Electious is listed separately with 2 males over 16 and one slave. Seemingly the other male is a brother, perhaps Thomas who is listed with Electious in the tax rolls of Nelson Co. KY. This would give Joseph eight sons and three daughters.

107 For the Hagans who migrate to Perry Co.,Missouri, cf.. Tim O'Rourke's Maryland Catholics on the Frontier for a complete accounting.

108 According to the 1850 Census, Quiller Hagan was 62 farmer, $1,080 with R. 27 f. L. 25f, and Pius 18m.

109 The tax rolls of 1793, Nelson Co. lists a Thomas Hagan, and the rolls of 1795 show a Thomas living on Froman Creek owning 100 A. This is the same location as Electious. Page 40 Thomas & Mary Hagan of Charles Co. MD June, 29 1996 Harry Hagan, OSB, St. Meinrad, IN 47577

113 The material on Electious Hagan, son of Joseph, is drawn from O'Rourke, Md Catholics on the Frontier, 548- 549; he says that all of his information on Electious came from Mary Jo Maguire of Detroit Michigan, a direct descendant. O'Rourke notes that "although Electious' approximate age of thirty-three at marriage seems relatively old, no wife waived dower rights in any of his land sales in Maryland, so we assume that Susanna Gwynn was his only wife." The 1790 Census of Prince George Co. lists the household of Electious with 2 males over 16, and one slave. The 1850 Census of Nelson co., KY lists him as "Elexius" age 83, farmer $4,460 with S. 70f, M, 22f, O, 16f.

140 In the book 1790 Census of VA, John Hagan of Fairfax Co. VA, appears on the tax lists of 1782 with 7 whites 1785 with 5 whites, 2 dwellings, 1 other building. Henry Hagan is also listed in 1782 with 3 whites and 1 black. In the 1787 Census of VA, Charles and Francis Hagan appear for Fairfax Co. They could be the reason that John's household goes from seven to five in 1782 and 1785, and therefore his sons. Francis, who had not married by 1818, appears on the 1810 Census of VA with two women: one 26-45 and the other 45 plus. Perhaps they are sisters who did not marry. There are no Hagan wills in Fairfax Co. through 1791 and no Hagan marriages in Fairfax Co. 1742- 1853.
