In early 2020, Lauren was announced as the new solo host of the BAFTA-winning programme ‘The Dog Ate My Homework’, previously fronted by ITV2 comedian Iain Stirling. Filming of the CBBC comedy panel show is scheduled for later this year. She is the host of Capital’s 'Early Breakfast' slot, live from 4am to 6am on weekdays and is the cover presenter for ‘The Capital Breakfast Show with Roman Kemp’. Lauren is an accomplished live television presenter thanks to four years of weekday afternoons presenting live continuity on ‘CBBC HQ’. She was the host of design programme ‘The Dengineers’ which won the BAFTA for Best Factual Entertainment in 2019 and she currently presents ‘The Playlist’ where she interviews the biggest names in pop, as well as appearing as a guest on countless other CBBC shows. In sport, you may have seen her presenting for BBC One’s ‘Match of the Day’ and its youth-oriented spin-off ‘MOTDx’ on BBC Two. She has hosted for the Premier League, Gfinity’s FIFA Elite Series and she’s a Manchester City fan. Wilkinson, Sugmin Youn This innovative series examines the wider social, political, economic and techno- logical changes arising from the globalization of the media and communications industries and assesses their impact on matters of business practice, regulation and policy. Considering media convergence, industry concentration, and new communications practices, the series makes reference to the paradigmatic shift from a system based on national decision-making and the traditions of public ser- vice in broadcast and telecommunications delivery to one that is demarcated by commercialization, privatization and monopolization. Bearing in mind this shift, and based on a multi-disciplinary approach, the series tackles three key questions: To what extent do new media developments require changes in regulatory philos- ophy and objectives? To what extent do new technologies and changing media consumption require changes in business practices and models? And to what extent does privatization alter the creative freedom and public accountability of media enterprises? Steven Barnett & Judith Townend

  • Notes from Impartiality Session at the VLV Spring Conference 2021
Notes from Impartiality Session at the VLV Spring Conference 2021 Is UK impartiality regulation fit for purpose? Professor Stephen Cushion of Cardiff University Lord Tom McNally Broadcaster Julia Hartley Brewer Rachel Corp, Editor of ITV News Stewart Purvis CBE, former Editor in Chief of ITN Chair: Mark Damazer CBE Mark Damazer set the scene: we have a very heavily regulated environment compared to the US and compared to the internet. The law of land applies to what goes on digitally but is nothing compared to the Ofcom Broadcasting Code. An Online Harms code is promised and will give Ofcom an expanded role. We know that new players are coming into broadcast market: GB news, News UK TV. Ofcom is wanting a new Chair. There are exciting names on list. Julia Hartley Brewer Is this an issue just now? We have not have impartiality on our screens for a long time, so now we have alternatives. ‘Due impartiality’ is the rule. Balance at elections is good. But we threw out due impartiality and without being honest about it. LBC and Talk radio provide different points of view. It’s also about the subjects you cover – there needs to be a range of subjects. There wasn’t impartial coverage during Brexit. We have had a dishonest debate in Britain. One of the problems is that people in the media all have the same views. People like me are considered extreme and beyond the pale but in fact our views are mainstream, along with a lot of people. Fear of echo chambers is the issue.
