The story goes that when Moore first fought in Argentina he splattered his opponent's blood all over Eva's dress as she sat ringside with her husband. I always hasten to point out this was not likely the first time a SouthAmerican dictator and his wife ever saw blood. Anyway, this is special to me because I once asked Moore about his association with the Peron's and he told me they had, indeed, been friends of his and were "beautiful people." Also with the album I picked up a later ALS from Juan Peron to Moore.

6 11 The Haul

Usually I am at least discreet enough to do articles about some facet of our hobby or some fighter which will mask what I suspect is my unconcious intent at just showing off what I bought lately. It works for you and me because I generally do pull enough stuff from the files to make the article, according to the feedback I get, at least moderately informative. But last issue I just flat said I would show you what I bought so I will hit some major pieces I picked up at Canastota.

Antique Photo I am a sucker for great antique photos like the one on the cover this month and like the Jeffries here, both of which were purchased in what must appear to be an attempt to finance a new wing on Craig's house. The Fitz is 9.5x13 (mount size) and the Jeffries, 8x11. I have been bearing down on Sarony (1821-1896) photos when I can get them because they are rarer than most other photographer's pics and come from the top guy in that field from the last century. Sarony took the definitive photographs of people such as Mark Twain and Oscar Wilde among thousands of others - including the 1890 Supreme Court. Now I say they are rare knowing that, at present time, you can find quite a few for sale. ALL those, as far as I know, came fairly recently from one collection and when they are gone, you will not see them again except at a later resale. I had collected cabinets, for instance for 20 years before I saw even one. Napolean Sarony's son, Otto (1859-1903), took up the mantle upon his father's death, incidentally, but later sold the studio name to another. The Jeffries bears Otto's name. JO SPORTS, INC. - Albums Craig Hamilton In the past several years, some very impressive photo albums have been offered for sale. There was Tad Dorgan's personal album and an album that the S.F. Chronicle reporters presented to their boss, DeYoung, following the Johnson- P.O. Box 607 Jeffries fight. Later albums emerged of the Gans-Nelson and Willard-Dempsey fights. Then a Dana album from John- Brookhaven, NY 11719 son-Jeffries turned up. Shown here is a Dana album from the Wolgast-Ritchie fight which I purchased in Canastota (Craig adds a ja- phone/fax 631-286-0970 cuzzi). But my favorite piece from Canastota is another album. This one is a large (21x14) hand-tooled leather album email: filled with large photos of Archie Moore. The album comes from the Moore estate and was presented to the Old Mon- [email protected] goose in 1957 by two of his biggest fans, Juan and Eva Peron (remember Madonna in Evita? THAT Peron).
