1870, it was reported that a London costermonger’s girl said ‘ Then will Father Christmas die too?’ It was a tribute to Charles Dickens, to both his association with Christmas and to his almost mythological status as well as his work. DATES FOR Some may say that Christmas is too sentimental; I don’t believe that. For if we can recapture the simple joy of sharing and caring and indeed loving at Christmas, YOUR DIARY and take it on through the whole of the year, then we will be living out why ‘God came down at Christmas’ as the baby Jesus, becoming human and changing the world by changing our lives, for good and for God so that we may love one another as he loves us.

committee members for their support throughout the year, which has not been an easy one. Hazel sadly lost her husband during the year and in Mothers’ Union circles we were all left the poorer by the death of Eileen Bangay. Eileen was a staunch member and had been a great help to Hazel when she took over as Leader. Hazel said she would carry on as Branch Leader for the present, but would inform the committee when she would cease to be available. The position of Secretary for the coming year has not yet been filled. Kay Abbot intimated that due to family commitments she wished to be relieved of this job. The position of Treasurer will again be filled by Christine Tucker. The next meeting which will have a Christmas theme is on the 7 December when the residents of Turberville Court will join us. BERE REGIS CHURCH FLOWER ARRANGING

It is hard to believe but we are almost at the end of the year, time for me to start thinking about putting next year’s flower arranging rota together. If there are any people on the rota at present who feel that it is getting too much for them and would like to step down next year then please let me know as soon as possible as I will need to get the rota to Alison for the parish magazine by the middle of December. Likewise if you know of holidays or times you can’t do the flowers next year, please let me know so that I can arrange the rota accordingly. If there is anyone who would like to go on the rota but has never been asked then please just give me a call or email me as I would be delighted to have new members. The duties are not too arduous and you don’t have to be Constance Spry! Nor do you have to be a regular churchgoer. There are weekly arrangers whom I try to organise in a couple to cover two weeks at a time and each couple’s turn comes round just twice a year (less if we get more people!) Usually each pair do fresh flowers the first week and tidy the arrangements the second. There are 2/3 arrangements to be done: the pedestal by the altar and the table as you come into the church and if possible a small arrangement on the chancel tomb. Most people use greenery and flowers from

78 11 December 2005 December 2005 their own or friend’s gardens and add a few bought flowers (excellent bargains to NEWS FROM CE FIRST SCHOOL be had at the supermarkets!) So it is not very arduous or expensive and does so much to enhance our beautiful church which gets so many visitors a year. There are also decorators who just come to decorate for the festivals (Easter, Harvest Thank you to everyone who sent in clothes for our recycling collection and and Christmas). Some noble souls do both!! Numbers are dwindling and offers of Tescos vouchers for sports equipment. The Village Hall Kitchen Work has started and at the time of writing is nearly complete. Jim has made great improvements in the kitchen sink layout which will make life much more convenient for those hirers who use the kitchen. These works are a stop gap pending the much needed improvements to the kitchen, storage area, W.C.s and the provision of a small meeting room. Unfortunately there is still a delay in making a start on these improvements. The delay is beyond the control of the Briantspuddle Hall Committee.

The Briantspuddle Hall Committee There is a vacancy on the Hall Committee for a member to be appointed by the Committee. If you are interested in the village hall and the place it holds in the community do consider putting yourself forward for appointment. The hall is the most important public building in the Parish and has in its time been used by all sections of the community for entertainment, family occasions, worship and for civil administration i.e. elections and Parish Council meetings. If you are able to help to administer this historic and important building do contact one of the committee members or the Secretary Sheila Pearce.

18 71 December 2005 December 2005 referee! More one-eyed than a Cyclops he turned a well matched contest into a comedy. As Bere pressed for an equaliser, there was the amusing sight of a five on one break, with Ginge being the hapless one. As both Ginge and the keeper were drawn to the ball it was centred to their forward and an open goal. How he spooned it over must still give him nightmares, but the £250 from ‘You’ve Been Framed’ should help console him. AC wrapped the game up with a scrambled goal from a corner more hotly disputed than the ‘X factor’ results. Cranborne must have been happy to join Bere in the second round with a bye and then unhappy to come to fortress Bere for a bye bye. Cranborne fielded a weaker side than at the beginning of the month but Bere were still in awesome form as they steamrollered their way to a 5-0 lead at half time. Wayne Cope was on top form as he poached two early goals and set up a tap in for the veteran Rob White to show that he had lost none of his goal hanging ability. It was unfortunate that Wayne suffered a twisted ankle or he would surely have plundered his hat trick. Rob White and Shaun Pettitt stepped in where Wayne had let off with a goal each and even Spivey chanced his luck. Rolling back the years he showed us his ‘Cruyff’ turn, swiftly followed by his ‘Feeble’ shot as the keeper laid down and waited for it to reach him. After this, the second half was a disappointment, even the sixth goal was an own goal! However, the sight of Bungy returning to the fray was enough to strike fear into the hearts of many, especially Ginge having to play alongside him in defence. They soon built up an understanding though, mainly with Bungy understanding that he should really play in midfield. Eventually, the referee finally blew his whistle and the players gleefully ran to the bar to watch England beat the Argies. Sometimes, life is good…..

CHURCHYARD MOWING

I will be putting together the mowing rota for 2006 before long and would ask those wanting to change their current mowing month or withdraw from the rota to contact me before the end of January. For each person on the rota, the commitment is 2- 3 hours mowing between the months of March ABBIRT PRINT and October, a comparatively light undertaking. In 2005 we extended the mowing period in the ADVERTISEMENT spring and autumn to take into account the milder climate we now experience and if this year has been a guide, we need to extend it to the first two weeks of November! So, to keep the mowing commitment manageable for all, we really would appreciate a few more newcomers to the rota. The effort put in by the mowing team is much appreciated by the whole community because a well kept churchyard, with some specific wild flower areas, gives great pleasure. PURBECK DISTRICT COUNCIL

Alcohol control in Public places Following extensive consultation the Council are proposing to designate a series of areas throughout Purbeck as “alcohol control areas”. What this means is that it will not be an offence to drink in these areas but it will be an offence to continue to drink in these areas when requested not to do so by a Police Officer. The suggested areas in Bere Regis are:- Church Lane, Elder Road, Manor Farm Road, North Street, Snow Hill, Snow Hill Lane, Southbrook, Tower Hill, Turberville Road and Car Park, West Street, Old Barn Road, the cemetery and all the areas in and around the Church. However there may be some serious difficulties in implementing this. It transpires that our new Community Support Officers, who are acting as policemen in our area will not have these powers. One might think this is not very sensible! I will be monitoring the situation closely.

Our much loved ‘postie’ Brian Hedges is retiring on Christmas Eve after serving 29 years with the Royal Mail. Everybody will be sorry to see him pack away his bag and hand over his red van to a successor, but we want to give him a very special send-off as he starts a much deserved life of leisure. There is a collection box for a retirement gift for Brian which is located in Moorse’s stores and a book for signatures under the counter. All contributions will be very much appreciated.

HELP DORSET COMMUNITIESIES TOTO BEBE MOREMORE ACTIVEACTIVE

The Dorset Strategic Partnership wants to get ideas from the public on how best to support communities to be more active so that the lives of local people are improved. We all live in a community. It may be a street, a hamlet, a village or part of a town. Local communities may be happy with everything that goes on in their community but more often than not they aren’t! The Dorset Strategic Partnership (see www.dorsetforyou.com/dsp ) earlier this year agreed five important areas of work that would support communities to be more active. If communities are more active then they will make their needs and ideas better known to local councils, the police, health bodies, etc, as well as organising activities and groups themselves.

The five work areas are: Communities to have a greater say about their needs and the services they get. More use of e-mail and the internet by communities by making sure that village and community halls and parish councils have broadband connections Help more people to volunteer

Make sure communities can do things themselves: With more money to get community projects off the ground With expert advice and support for communities to get things changed and done. Support is given to organisations that can be the community’s voice to others, and provide local services

More use of voluntary and community groups to run local services The Active Communities Theme Group (ACTG) of the Dorset Strategic Partnership has been thinking how each of these five areas of work can be done. Bournemouth University is carrying out an independent consultation for the ACTG. They want as many local people and organisations as possible to fill in a simple questionnaire by 30 th November. The questionnaire has already been sent out to all town and parish councils, local authorities, Primary Care Trusts, and 520 voluntary and community groups. The questionnaire is also available from DCA’s website ( www.dorsetcommunityaction.org.uk ) or by ringing 01305 216400. The University is also running two consultation events. The first is in Wimborne on 23 rd November 2pm-4pm and Dorchester on 26 th November 10am -12pm. To book a place please ring 01305 216400.

BERE REGIS YOUTH ‘LENNY’S’

The ‘Giant Connect 4 Challenge’ turned out to be popular with the club’s young members on the 18 th October. Everyone took turns in challenging one another to see who the overall winner would be; in the end the games just went on and on as no one seemed too concerned about winning, just having fun.

October 25 th was once again ‘Halloween Night’ as the members, wearing fancy dress, enjoyed traditional activities including Apple Bobbing and the ever popular Flour and Treacle Sweet Dipping. The Fancy Dress competition was won by Robert Spivey who looked really scary until he dressed up, just joking Robert. Well done to everyone for getting into the spirit and making it a really great evening.

A Darts Evening took place on the 15 th November with members taking part in challenge games against one another. In between darts members enjoyed a game or two of pool while others just chatted together. The annual ‘Talent Show’ is being held at the youth club on November 22 nd with the winner going forward to the Dorset Youth Association finals in Dorchester on the 9 th December. To round of the month a ‘Pool Challenge’ will be taking place on the 29 th.

An Entertainment Evening is planned for 13 th December, when there will be a chance for members to have a relaxed time in the run up to Christmas. In December the youth club will be holding the annual Christmas Party, the festive event taking place on Tuesday 20 th December, to bring an end to another successful year.

The club will re-open on the 17 th January for the first session of the New Year, membership being renewable from this date. New members are always welcome, just call in at the club on any club night; we will be pleased to see you.
