One outlet which constantly both reflects and enables patriarchy is our media; the movie industry in particular plays a critical role in constructing gender roles and reflecting our cultural attitudes toward patriarchy. The Big Sick- Review
The largest language academy within Vallès Oriental is pleased to provide you with this review, crosswords and contest. The Big Sick– Review Based on the real-life courtship between Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, The Big Sick tells the story of Pakistan-born aspiring comedian Kumail (Nanjiani), who connects with grad student Emily (Kazan) after one of his standup sets. However, what they thought would be just a one-night stand blossoms into the real thing, which complicates the life that is expected of Kumail by his traditional Muslim parents. When Emily is beset with a mystery illness, it forces Kumail to navigate the medical crisis with her parents, Beth and Terry (Holly Hunter and Ray Romano) who he's never met, while dealing with the emotional tug-of-war between his family and his heart . A powerful and emotional film that touches upon topics not normally seen in romantic comedies. The assimilation of culture and what the meaning of family and love can mean to a person, what pursuing your dreams can do to your relationships to both family and significant others, finding out who you want to be despite everyone telling you you're wrong. Thus is a hugely enjoyable, lovable comedy. Even in the darkest and most dire of moments, The Big Sick never stops being a comedy. In the film – as is the case in life – humor can still stand out and get you through the most difficult of times. Eamed with Michael Showalter’s direction, producer Judd Apatow, and a top notch cast , Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. -

												Netflix's Big Mouth
Netflix’s Big Mouth Big Mouth = Big Topics The first season of Netflix’s new animated show Big Mouth debuted on September 29, 2017 and is very popular among teens and young adults. Boasting an all-star cast and a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the cartoon is about middle schoolers going through puberty in the most explicit, perverse, and, at times, depraved way possible. Puberty is indeed a difficult time for all of us, and while the show does bring some good to the discussion, it’s also fraught with problems. What do I need to know about Big Mouth? It’s an adult cartoon based on the real-life experiences that comic writers Nick Kroll and An- drew Goldberg had as kids growing up in New York. They share, in graphic detail, what it was like growing up and going through puberty. As most young men do, Nick and Andrew strug- gled through lust, sexuality, relationships with girls, and the ups and downs of friendship. The show features some of the most popular comedians of our time as the voices, including: John Mulaney, Fred Armisen, Kristen Wiig, and Jordan Peele. Although the show is about pre-teens, it is intended for an adult audience. However, Netflix does not effectively limit younger viewers’ access, and undoubtedly, there will be many teens and pre-teens who watch the show. Many of them have lots of questions about sex, and they will be drawn to the show in hopes of finding answers. Unfortunately, due to the content, they are likely to develop some severely warped ideas from watching it. -

screenwritersmonthly.com | Screenwriter’s Monthly Give ‘em some credit! Johnny Depp's performance as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is amazing. As film critic after film critic stumbled over Screenwriter’s Monthly can be found themselves to call his performance everything from "original" to at the following fine locations: "eccentric," they forgot one thing: the screenwriters, Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, who did one heck of a job creating Sparrow on paper first. Sure, some critics mentioned the writers when they declared the film "cliché" and attacked it. Since the previous Walt Disney Los Angeles film based on one of its theme park attractions was the unbear- able The Country Bears, Pirates of the Caribbean is surprisingly Above The Fold 370 N. Fairfax Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90036 entertaining. But let’s face it. This wasn't intended to be serious (323) 935-8525 filmmaking. Not much is anymore in Hollywood. Recently the USA Today ran an article asking, basically, “What’s wrong with Hollywood?” Blockbusters are failing because Above The Fold 1257 3rd St. Promenade Santa Monica, CA attendance is down 3.3% from last year. It’s anyone’s guess why 90401 (310) 393-2690 this is happening, and frankly, it doesn’t matter, because next year the industry will be back in full force with the same schlep of Above The Fold 226 N. But maybe if we turn our backs to Hollywood’s fast food service, they will serve us something different. -

												About Theatre Bay Area
welcome! Welcome to Theatre Bay Area’s 2018 Annual Conference. We are thrilled to return again this spring to downtown Berkeley as we gather together hundreds of theatre-makers from around the region and far beyond. We are excited for this chance to explore new venues as we meet new colleagues and reconnect with long-time friends and compatriots. This past year has brought a series of stunning developments here in the Bay Area, across the nation, and around the world. As we crafted the programming for this gathering, we aimed to address both the serious challenges and promising opportunities these local and global changes present our community. Our conference theme, “Seismic Shifts: Embracing a Changing Theatre Ecology,” speaks to the enormity of change and the potent mix of anxiety and hope we face in today’s theatre-making environment. Here today we have a chance to confront together those “seismic shifts” and to learn from each other new ways of navigating change and embracing the future. We like to say we make this conference together. While we will hear today from renowned experts, such as our keynote speaker, Professor John Holden, from the University of Leeds and Great Britain’s Clore Cultural Leadership Programme, we also depend on each of you to add your voice to the mix. Your expertise and perspective is essential for creating a day of shared learning and we invite you to engage vigorously in today’s wide range of conversations. Seismic shifts can leave destruction in their wake; they also offer a chance to rebuild in ways that are better and stronger. -

Wmc Investigation: 10-Year Analysis of Gender & Oscar
WMC INVESTIGATION: 10-YEAR ANALYSIS OF GENDER & OSCAR NOMINATIONS womensmediacenter.com @womensmediacntr WOMEN’S MEDIA CENTER ABOUT THE WOMEN’S MEDIA CENTER In 2005, Jane Fonda, Robin Morgan, and Gloria Steinem founded the Women’s Media Center (WMC), a progressive, nonpartisan, nonproft organization endeav- oring to raise the visibility, viability, and decision-making power of women and girls in media and thereby ensuring that their stories get told and their voices are heard. To reach those necessary goals, we strategically use an array of interconnected channels and platforms to transform not only the media landscape but also a cul- ture in which women’s and girls’ voices, stories, experiences, and images are nei- ther suffciently amplifed nor placed on par with the voices, stories, experiences, and images of men and boys. Our strategic tools include monitoring the media; commissioning and conducting research; and undertaking other special initiatives to spotlight gender and racial bias in news coverage, entertainment flm and television, social media, and other key sectors. Our publications include the book “Unspinning the Spin: The Women’s Media Center Guide to Fair and Accurate Language”; “The Women’s Media Center’s Media Guide to Gender Neutral Coverage of Women Candidates + Politicians”; “The Women’s Media Center Media Guide to Covering Reproductive Issues”; “WMC Media Watch: The Gender Gap in Coverage of Reproductive Issues”; “Writing Rape: How U.S. Media Cover Campus Rape and Sexual Assault”; “WMC Investigation: 10-Year Review of Gender & Emmy Nominations”; and the Women’s Media Center’s annual WMC Status of Women in the U.S.
