You will also find the standings of the first three places in all events for men and women at the Olympic Games followed by several classifications which are listed either by the number of titles or medals by swimmer or National Federation. It should be noted that these standings only have an historical aim but no sport signification because the comparison between the achievements of swimmers of different generations is always unfair for several reasons: 1. The period of time. The Olympic Games were not organised in 1916, 1940 and 1944 2. The evolution of the programme.

POST’S GUIDE to the PAN AM GAMES SWIMMINGSwimming GUIDE TO THE GAMES B Y K AITLYN MC G RATH , NATIONAL POST Venue The CIBC Pan Am / Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House Venue acronym PAC Landmark status Medium Built specifically for the Games, the venue features two Olympic- sized pools, a five-metre diving tank, as well as an indoor track and fitness centre. Once the Games are complete, the facility will be open to the community and students attending nearby U of T Scarborough — and will likely see an increase of pee in its pools. 2 NATIONAL POST GUIDE TO THE GAMES Other events at venue Diving, synchronized swimming, fencing, modern pentathlon, roller speed skating, sitting vol- leyball (Parapan Am) Transit options This trip would normally involve a lot of time on a bus, possibly multiple buses. Fortunately, there is a shuttle — the conveniently named Aquatics Centre Rocket, also known as the 194. It leaves from Don Mills Station (on Line 4) and is non-stop to the Aquatics Centre Loop, a short walk from the venue. Other options: the 198 U of T Scarborough Rocket ex- press bus from Kennedy Station (Line 2); the 95 York Mills from York Mills Station (Line 1); or the 38 Highland Creek bus from 3 NATIONAL POST GUIDE TO THE GAMES Scarborough Centre Station (Line 3) or from the Rouge Hill Go Sta- tion. For drivers, the site is con- veniently located near Highway 401. What this location lacks in downtown convenience it makes up for in downtown prices: Be prepared to shell out $20 for parking in lots G and H at the U of T Scarborough campus.

  • Sport in the New Media. Media Coverages of Selected Sport Disciplines During the Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro12
CULTURE – SOCIETY – EDUCATION NO. 2 (16) 2019 POZNAŃ Natalia Organista* Martyna Halter-Bogołębska Józef Piłsudski Academy Józef Piłsudski Academy of Physical Education in Warsaw of Physical Education in Warsaw Sport in the new media. Media coverages of selected sport disciplines during the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro12 KEYWORDS ABSTRACT sport, media, media coverage, Organista Natalia, Halter–Bogołębska Martyna, Sport in gender, Olympics, femininity, the new media. Media coverages of selected sport disci- masculinity plines during the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Cul- ture – Society – Education no 2(16) 2019, Poznań 2019, pp. 203–224, Adam Mickiewicz University Press. ISSN 2300–0422. DOI 10.14746/kse.2019.16.13. This study concerns the online sports media coverage, a topic that has not been previously analyzed in Poland. In recent decades many studies (in Anglo–Saxon countries in particular) indicated the major underrepresentation of women’s sport and different framing of sportswomen and sportsmen. Those studies showed that the media plays important role in upholding gender stereotypes in sport and hindering empowerment of sportswomen. This study analyzes media coverage of three sports disciplines (gym- nastics, swimming and weightlifting) during Rio Olympics on five websites. Findings revealed underrepresentation of women’s sport and setting the trend to write about women’s sport in disciplines consider as appropriated for women. The qualitative analysis did not indicate gender– specific descriptors in materials about sportspeople. * ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000–0003–0106–7568. ** Badanie zrealizowano ze środków pozyskanych w ramach projektu DM–55: „Nierówności płciowe w sportowych przekazach w nowych mediach” Akademii Wychowania Fizycznego Józefa Piłsudskiego w Warszawie.

  • January 2017
Ontario Aquatic Hall of Fame Newsletter - January 2017 Congratulations Olympic & Paralympic Games- Ontario Swimmers Swimming on Olympic & Paralympic Teams Mike West has provided us some insight as an Olympian and voiced his feelings about this Summer’s Games: 2016 Olympic Team: “It was so exciting to watch the Canadian team swim with such confidence. Javier Acevedo (MAC) We’ve been through some lean years with respect to medals for Canadian swimmers at Ashton Baumann * the Olympics, it is so validating to see our swimmers get to the podium, and win gold (Ottawa) medals - way to go Penny. Dominique Bouchard (OAK) Overall I’m feeling really hopeful about the future of Canadian swimming - I get the Santo Condorelli (Kenora) sense that the team feels like they actually belong at the party. Mack Darragh (OAK) Kennedy Goss * (GGST) Hilary Caldwell said it so confidently after her 200 back - that reaching the podium was Audrey Lacroix (ANM) now “normal” for Canadian swimmers - and I think this is such a shift in thinking for our Brittany Maclean (ESWIM) swimmers. Sandrine Mainville (CAMO) When I swam in 1984 it wasn’t “if” you made the podium, it was where on the podium Kylie Masse (WEST/UT) you would be standing. And that is the feeling that I think is spreading through our Martha McCabe (TSC) Canadian team after Rio - our swimmers now have the confidence to not only compete Penny Oleksiak (TSC) with the best in the world, but to also contend for medals, including gold medals, at the Erika Seltenreich- international stage. Hodgson (GO) So excited

RIO 2016 SWIMMING THE BEST EVER How Penny Oleksiak—‘the child’ of the Canadian team—came from nowhere to become its greatest Summer Olympian, and what comes next for the teenage phenom. By Jonathon Gatehouse Penny Oleksiak dips her hand into her red Team Canada backpack and retrieves four wool work-socks. Put aside the question of what kind of person brings winter foot-wrap- pers to the Summer Olympics, and focus instead on what’s inside them. Grabbing the green and yellow ribbons, she pulls the med- als out one-by-one, laying the two bronze on her thighs, then the silver, and finally gold. She drapes them around her neck. It’s the first time she has worn all four at once. “They’re so heavy!” she exclaims. The Rio baubles weigh 500 grams each. As she walks across the room they clink together, making a sound like wind chimes. The Maclean’s photographer wants some- thing iconic. He grabs his phone and shows her that picture of the great American cham- pion Mark Spitz, with his cheesy moustache and seven golds from Munich 1972. I ask if she knows who Spitz is. “Not really,” Oleksiak admits with an embarrassed little laugh. “But I think I’ve seen the photo.” The 16-year-old Torontonian can be for- given for not knowing swimming history: She’s been too busy making it. Oleksiak finishes her Winning smile: Oleksiak looks triumphant after her gold performance in the 100-m freestyle 3 3 Tie game: Oleksiak (right) surged forward from seventh place at the 50-m turn to finish the race at the exact same time as Simone Manuel (left) first Olympics, which was also her first major in lots of late victory ceremonies and press about it a little bit, but I don’t think it’s changed international meet, with the most medals ever conferences, too-wired-to-sleep nights and too much,” she says.
