In the 1861 Census he was aged 4, living with his parents at Catchwell Cottage, Turnpike Road, Barnton.

By the time of the 1871 Census Peter was living with his parents and had become a wheelwright’s apprentice.

Peter continued to work with wood. The 1881 Census shows him to be a ship’s carpenter, born at Barnton and living with his parents at Catchwell Cottage.

By 1881 Peter was courting Jane Fogg who was born on February 8th 1863 at Bradshaw Brook, Allostock, near Northwich, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Fogg. Jane was baptised in the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel at Leftwich.

Jane’s baptism was on 22nd February 1863.

Later in 1881 Peter married Jane Fogg at Barnton Church on 25th September 1881.

The marriage was witnessed by Samuel Hindley, the youngest brother of Peter; and by Martha Fogg, Jane’s older sister.

According to the register of Occupation Voters for Cheshire (1842-1900) Peter first appears in the 1885/6 list with the qualifying property being in Lydyett Lane, Barnton. He appears every year from then until 1898 when the voting list states 28 Lydyett Lane.

In the 1891 Census Peter (34) and Jane (28) were living in Lydyett Lane, Barnton. They had no children of their own but they did have Jane’s niece living with them. Sarah Ann Wilkinson, aged 7, was a scholar, born at .

It looks as though Peter and Jane moved to 39 Nursery Road, Barnton, in 1899. The electoral register for 1899 lists two qualifying properties for Peter; 29 Lydyett Lane and 39 Nursery Road. Peter’s only qualifying property in 1900 was 39 Nursery Road.

By the time of the 1901 Census Peter and Jane were living at 39 Nursery Road, Barnton. Sarah Ann Wilkinson (who would have been 17) had moved away but there was a servant in the household, Sarah A Minshull of Barnton, aged 12.

Jane died in 1910 aged 46 years. She was buried at Barnton Church on November 2nd 1910. Her death was recorded in the Barnton Church Records (see below). PETER HINDLEY (1856-1933) 1856PETE/3

At the time of her death Jane was living at “The Leys, Pauviah, Parish?”. (Unknown to me). However; The Ley, Winnington was a Red Cross Hospital from around 1910-1919, and Jane might have been there. My parents had their wedding reception at The Ley in 1936. The Ley, at the junction of Winnington Lane and Moss Road was demolished in the 1950s to make way for ICI Offices. The Offices were demolished in the 1990s to be replaced by houses.

Sometime after Jane’s death Peter moved into lodgings at 56 Nursery Road, Barnton. In the 1911 Census he is 54, a widower, and living at the house of William and Martha Thornton at 56 Nursery Road, believed to be at the junction with Mond Street. Mrs Thornton used to give her husband (a shoemaker) a hard time.

At some point Peter lived at 287 Runcorn Road, Barnton, and was probably a tenant of his brother Edward who at one time owned the row of houses bordering Snowdon Street. Number 287 was the end house of the block on the Little Leigh side. At the side of the house there was land and a workshop. Peter had a carpentry business here. In particular, Peter made ladders but he also made wheelbarrows and wheels for farm carts. Making fishing rods was another speciality. Peter obtained his timber from Liverpool Docks.

Peter was a pleasant, large fellow. He died on 26th January 1933.
