Responding gratefully through service in our community, worshipping our Creator and working to alleviate hunger in our neighborhood.

Greetings!

I am writing you from Baltimore, Maryland and the NEXT Church Conference. It was a great first day and I am grateful that you all have encouraged me to attend. I am excited to share with you all the information I glean.

The NEXT Church is a network of leaders —church members, ruling elders, youth leaders, educators, pastors, seminarians, and profes- sors —across the PCUSA who believe the church of the future will be more relational, more diverse, more collaborating, more hopeful, and more agile. Space has been created for robust

~John 15:1 ~John conversation about the theology, culture, and the practice of ministry; to support strong, faithful leadership in a time of adaptive change, and encourage collaboration and creativity across congregations and geographies.

The theme for this year is The Desert In Bloom . It is based on the sacred stories — individual and communal —return to the desert. The prophet Isaiah wrote to a people in despair: "The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blos- som." (35:1). One of the speakers said that the wilderness is a doorway through dead ends.

The conference leaders are asking church leaders to embrace a wilderness identity in pursuit of hope, resilience, clarity, and resurrections so often found there. The church is changing, and some things are dying, which gives way for renewal and rebirth. As we

continue the work of our church —loving and serving our neighbors, it is exciting to see “I am the truethe gardener.”and am Father vine the my is “I where our ministry is growing deeper and the new places where we are being invited to serve.

There is one question posed to us that continued to linger on my mind for the rest of the day and I ask it of you: "Where do you/we find life from?" I would love to hear where you find life and where our church finds life. I believe what gives us life is where God is asking us to be. One day down and two to go... I am excited. Join us for our Maundy Thursday Worship, Thursday March 29th at 6:45pm. Maundy Thursday begins the Three Days (or Triduum), remembering the new commandment that Christ gave us in word and deed as he taught us how to love one another, washing our feet as a servant. We also celebrate the Lord’s Supper, remembering the meal Christ shared with his disciples before his death. Historically, this was the traditional day in which those who had undergone a period of public penance under church discipline would be restored to full commun- ion. Some trivia: An excerpt from the Companion to the Book of Common Worship (Geneva Press, 2003, 113 -116, 131 -132) The name is taken from the first words sung at the ceremony of the washing of the feet, “I give you a new commandment” (John 13:34); also from the commandment of Christ that we should imitate his loving humility in the washing of the feet (John 13:14 -17). The term man datum (maundy), therefore, was applied to the rite of the foot washing on this day.

The Worship Team will meet at 5:30 Wednesday, March 7 to plan Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Easter and perhaps more. If you are interested in the elements of our worship, have creave ideas and most of all, a willingness to help, please join us!

The Cooking Matters* team is very excited about the plans for the kitchen makeover taking place at SPC in the very near future! The modifications being made will allow us to conduct our Cooking Matters courses here at SPC instead of traveling with all our supplies to another church kitchen. This renovation will provide us with a larger cooking space, larger teaching space, ample storage, and better access to the facility and flexibility with scheduling. When the reno- vations are complete, we will need to stock the kitchen with some new equip- ment and supplies to get it ready for Cooking Matters instruction. Bed, Bath, and Beyond is working with us to create a registry of all our needs. Please start saving your Bed, Bath, and Beyond coupons, as we can use one cou- pon per item purchased and expired coupons are accepted! Look for more information on our kitchen registry in the April Grapevine.

Contact Ana Atwater at [email protected] to find out how you can participate in the Cooking Matters ministry at SPC. For more information on the Cooking Matters program, visit www.cookingmatters.org.

March 24 at SPC —9 am —4 pm FaithAction All Day ID Drive FaithAction with the support of the GPD, launched the FaithAction ID initiative in the summer of 2013, providing identification for ANY RESIDENT in our community who may not have access to government issued forms of ID (including: immigrants, youth, elderly, LGBTQ community, special needs), and for ALL those who support the mission and work of FaithAction. Since this time they have held 30 ID orientations and drives in partnership with law enforcement, health agencies, faith communities congregations, and alongside our FaithAction ID Network partners we have now delivered over 10,000 ID cards to individuals representing over 40 different nations, and over 60 cities throughout North and South Carolina, Virginia, and Ohio – from West African business owners to new families from South and Central America to a grandmother born 80 years ago in rural North Carolina whose birth records no longer exist, to local faith leaders and city council members who support a diverse and inclusive community. Valentine’s Day - Fat Tuesday – Ash Wednesday No matter what you want to call our February 14 meal and service to begin Lent, it was a success! Tables were set for 56, and only a couple of were seen. Thanks to the Session for spon- soring this event (providing food AND doing the cooking, set up and clean up). Thanks for all who attended and were blessed with a great meal, fun fellowship, and a deeply personal worship service.

Several members of our congregation have found them- selves blessed with a handmade lap throw or quilt. Not being able to knit or crochet, our “secret sister” crafts with fabric to create her version of prayer shawls, envisioning each re- cipient wrapped in a warm hug and surrounded – literally wrapped – in prayer. What a pro- found image that is for us! Thank you, “secret sister,” for reminding us to minister to one an- other, and for showing us that the sweet, Holy Spirit is no doubt at work at SPC. Our Compost Pile —Can you contribute coffee grounds or leaves?

The Benevolence Team wants to encourage anyone who is willing to continue advocating for people who are struggling with hunger and poverty. This can be done by calling and/or emailing and/or writing letters to your congressional representatives and express- ing your concerns, asking that these decision makers consider maintaining and, even en- hancing, programs for people in need.
