If you are looking for some outdoor fun in the Grande Prairie and Slave Lake areas this winter, consider a visit to a local provincial park. A variety of winter activities are available. Skating Enjoy skating on a new rink at Young’s Point Provincial Park. Skating is also available, weather permitting, at Saskatoon Island and Moonshine Lake provincial parks. The lakeside rinks have lights and a shelter for warming up after your skate. Cross-country Skiing Wax your skis and hit the trails at Saskatoon Island, Moonshine Lake, Young’s Point, Winagami Lake and Lesser Slave Lake provincial parks. Each of the parks offer seven to 20 kilometres of set track winding through beautiful, snow-covered forests. Snowshoeing A winter walk in the woods is fun on snowshoes (please stay off the ski trails). Explore the trail system at Saskatoon Island, Moonshine Lake, Young’s Point, Winagami Lake or Lesser Slave Lake provincial parks and then enjoy your own hot chocolate around the wood stove in a day use shelter. Ice Fishing Fish for trout at Moonshine Lake Provincial Park or drop your line for walleye, pike, whitefish and perch in Sturgeon Lake off Young’s Point Provincial Park or Lesser Slave Lake off Hilliard’s Bay Provincial Park. The South Fork Flathead Watershed Westslope Cutthroat Trout Conservation Program constitutes a portion of the Hungry Horse Mitigation Program. The purpose of the Hungry Horse Mitigation Program is to mitigate for the construction and operation of Hungry Horse Dam through restoring habitat, improving fish passage, protecting and recovering native fish populations, and reestablishing fish harvest opportunities. The target species for the Hungry Horse Mitigation Program are bull trout, westslope cutthroat trout, and mountain whitefish. The program is designed to preserve the genetically pure fluvial and adfluvial westslope cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki lewisi) populations in the South Fork drainage of the Flathead River. In order to accomplish the goals, MFWP is proposing to remove hybrid trout from identified lakes in the South Fork Flathead drainage on the Flathead National Forest and replace them with genetically pure native westslope cutthroat trout over the next 10-12 years. Some of these lakes occur within the Bob Marshall Wilderness and Jewel Basin Hiking Area. Currently, 21 lakes and their outflow streams with hybrid populations have been identified and are included in this proposal.

Methylmercury is transformed from inorganic forms of mercury via methylation by micro-organisms in natural waters, and can accumulate in some fish. Humans are exposed to very low levels of mercury directly from the air, water and food. Fish consumers may be exposed to relatively higher levels of methylmercury by eating mercury-containing fish from local rivers and lakes. Methylmercury can accumulate in the human body over time. Because methylmercury is a known neurotoxin, it is necessary to limit human exposure. From 2009 to 2013, the Departments of Environment and Parks (AEP) and Health (AH) initiated a survey of mercury levels in fish in selected water bodies in Alberta. These water bodies are extensively accessed by the public for recreational activities. This report deals with (1) concentrations of total mercury levels in various fish species collected from the water bodies in Alberta, (2) estimated exposures, (3) fish consumption limits, (4) fish consumption advisories, and (5) health benefits of fish consumption. The results indicate that: 1. Concentrations of total mercury in fish in the water bodies in Alberta were within the ranges for the same fish species from other water bodies elsewhere in Canada and the United States.
