Foundation Annual Report 2010 1 Your financial support not only provides me with the wonderful opportunity to live in residence at Trinity College, it also takes what would otherwise be a huge strain and stress out of my life, allowing me to better complete my final year medicine and surgery at University.

3 Report of the Executive Director In last year’s report, I signalled that we would be ready to bring the Campaign for Trinity to a successful conclusion in the first half of 2010. I would like to thank everyone for the extraordinary support and generosity which allowed the Campaign to raise more than $27 million since 2002. We celebrated this moment in March. All donors were invited to attend a thank you event at the College, where they were entertained by the College Choir and the cast of Twelve, the College play. The Chairman of the Board and the Warden added their thanks and pointed the way to the future; and acknowledged the role played by the members of the Foundation. 2010 continued to be a strong year for the Foundation despite the continuing after-effects of the global financial crisis and a number of other natural disasters which touched our community both directly and indirectly. During the year $2.64 million was raised in cash, with about $400,000 of that money coming through the annual giving program. These are very strong results and have enabled the College to continue its program of capital works, as well as providing almost $800,000 in scholarship support across all divisions of the College from recurrent and endowed funds. Three other significant events occurred in the early part of the year. The beautifully redeveloped and expanded Theological School in the Old Warden’s Lodge was completed, and the complex was opened and dedicated by the Archbishop of Melbourne, the Most Reverend Philip Freier. The more than one hundred guests who attended the moving service of

You do indeed make a difference to the College in all that you do, and continue to help us meet our goals and fulfil our mission.

In this, it is clear to see our international connections and outreach - one of the Dr Graeme Blackman OAM defining aspects of the modern Trinity. While we constantly look outwards and forwards, we nevertheless are keen guardians and supporters of the heritage of the College. Our commitment to sustainability, the developing masterplan for the buildings and grounds, and of the core values of the College underpin our activities. This was the theme of our excellent guest speaker at the Annual General Meeting, Ian Penrose (TC 1967). As we reflect upon our successes in 2010, we also look forward to even greater challenges over the next

Disbursements to Trinity College totaled $2.8m and included such items as Scholarships $738k, the Theological School Redevelopment project $525k, funding the Campaign costs $467k, the Gourlay Visiting Professor in Ethics in Business program $96k, general buildings and grounds works $219k, the BA(Extended) program $113k, Theological School studentships and lectureships $51k, the 2010 Choir Tour $115k, and funds transferred to the College from the Caldwell distribution $216k and the Theological School Fund $58k. The Investment Management Committee, Finance Committee and the Board continue to monitor the funds’ performance and to work closely with JANA on charting a course that endeavours to maintain the real value of endowments and still meets the needs of Trinity College. 10 FOSTERed by philanthropy

Trinity College aims to provide transformative educational experiences for talented students from diverse backgrounds. Empowering the College in its pursuit of this goal is the extensive support received from alumni and friends who share this vision.

The following offers a snapshot of philanthropy at work in Trinity College in 2010:

11 The College has provided me with valuable supplementary academic support in the form of tutorials and ‘fireside chats’, but also offers a wealth of opportunities outside the university curriculum. Participation in Trinity life has fostered many friendships, which are ultimately what I will treasure from my time in residence.

12 REINSTATING THE BOWLING GREEN After the successful installation of the water tanks and the restoration of the Bulpadock, in 2010 Trinity looked north to the College Oak, and restored the smaller area which, at one time, was the ‘bowling green.’ The old grass was removed, new grass (Santa Ana Couch) was installed with a new watering system, fed by the tanks. Two new seating areas were created with attractive tables and chairs to add another new and comfortable outdoor area for students and staff.

13 OPENING OF THE REDEVELOPED AND EXPANDED THEOLOGICAL SCHOOL After more than a year of construction, the beautiful ‘new’ Old Warden’s Lodge was opened and dedicated by Archbishop Philip Freier in March 2010. Built to exacting sustainable standards, the Theological School provides light-filled space for the expanding programs of the School as well as flexible spaces for many College-wide uses. All this was made possible through the great generosity of Robert Cripps AM and his family.

14 DEVELOPMENT OF THE BA(EXTENDED) The second year of the BA(Extended) program saw 12 of the original 2009 students complete the second year of their course successfully. We also welcomed another eleven students to the program. In conjunction with the Faculty of Business and Economics, Trinity gained the philanthropic support of KPMG to create new scholarships in support of students in the BA(Extended) who wish to follow a career in commerce or business. The first of these scholarships will be offered in 2011.

I am a young NyUnGar woman from and have come in search of a better education in order to help my people and the wider community – this has been made possible thanks to you providing me with the mEans to begin a greater education with stability...

15 Art PATRONS dinner The inaugural Art Patrons Dinner was a splendid and artistically beautiful event. More than one hundred guests attended and more than $13,000 was raised towards the purchase of the magnificent portrait of Manning Clark by Arthur Boyd. The College was also presented with portraits of Sir Rupert Hamer, Chester Wilmot and Richard Woolcott AC to sustained applause and acclamation. Later in the year, the College was presented with a very fine portrait of Sir Roderick Carnegie AC (below).

16 choir world tour Early in 2010, with considerable support from Louise Gourlay OAM, the Foundation helped to raise more than $150,000 in support of the Choir’s international tour to Europe in July. The tour was an outstanding success with particular highlights being performances in Bach’s own church, St Thomas’ in Leipzig, in Ely Cathedral in England, and in Westminster Abbey. Sir David Willcocks also conducted the Choir in a private workshop in the Chapel of King’s College, Cambridge. 17 GIVING TO THE FUTURE: BEQUESTS AT TRINITY Many people consider their wills to see how they may be able to invest in the programs and students of the future. All those who inform the College that they have made a provision for the College in their wills become members of the Leeper Society, created to commemorate not only our first Warden, but also his own legacy –and those of his children Valentine and Geoffrey – to the future of Trinity. In 2010, Trinity received a most generous bequest from the late Peggy Shaw (inset below), wife of Professor AGL Shaw (TC 1935). A noted artist, she had already given the College some of her significant paintings. In her will she left more than $800,000 to be used for the greatest needs of the College. Such a vision and such generosity is truly transformational for the College. .

18 WARDEN’S CIRCLE All supporters of the College who make a gift of at least $1000 during the year become members of the Warden’s Circle. These regular supporters are the backbone of the regular fundraising activities of Trinity and are inspired by the patronage of Louise Gourlay OAM. During the year, members attended the College Play (Twelve) and the College Musical (Kiss Me Kate) as guests of the Advancement Office. Members were also invited to attend the annual Warden’s Circle Garden Party in November. 19 Without the generosity you and others like you display through the funding of scholarships, Trinity would not be able to attract those talented persons who may not have the financial means to attend college. I hope my involvement in all the various aspects of Trinity life contributes in some very small way to repaying your kindness.
