COROBRIK DRIVES TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR SOUTH AFRICAN YOUTH

Corobrik Building Training Centre in conjunction with an organisation known as Kolping Society of have held a third successful training course when twelve unemployed youth learned to lay bricks and pavers.

Candidates were selected from communities in , , and to attend the 45 days bricklaying and paving skills programme in Dysseldorp.

Mr. AB Fataar, Corobrik’s building instructor says, “The training was very successful and all twelve learners were awarded an accredited certificate.”

“During 2009 various construction projects are planned in George, Ladismith, Oudtshoorn and surrounding areas where the graduates will be employed.”

“Some of the graduates are working on community projects building houses and aim to form teams to start sub contracting in their communities.”

This is the second training course that Corobrik has facilitated for Kolping. Corobrik’s training facilities in , Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal have been running training courses since 1995. During this time more than 1000 disadvantaged people have been equiped with a skill which they can use to earn a living. Corobrik follows a holistic approach to sustainability that covers both environmental and economic considerations and brick layer training is one area where Corobrik believes it is helping to make a sustainable difference to people’s lives.

Kolping, an internationally funded organization, is assisting in the transformation of South Africa by ‘helping people to help themselves.’ Kolping funded the course and also provided accommodation to the twelve learners and instructor for the period of the course.

The organisation has identified the youth as an important sector of our society that needs nurturing and empowering. By offering the youth training in a range of skills, Kolping believes the youth will be able to find work to support themselves and their families.
