ave you seen the original King Kong? 3/C No — honestly. Have you seen the CREATIVE DIRECTOR DANIEL CULLEN original King Kong? PRODUCTION MANAGER SHEILA GREGORY B H PRODUCTION ASSISTANT ZAC VEGA

A quick, entirely unscientific, survey G around the Famous offices shows that, CONTRIBUTORS RON DICKER R although they’re reluctant to admit it, most EARL DITTMAN people under the age of 40 have never seen SCOTT GARDNER the 1933 version of King Kong. Despite its SUSAN GRANGER classic status, and that it starred Canadian DAN LIEBMAN Fay Wray, it’s one of those movies that represents an embarrassing blank spot ADVERTISING SALES FOR FAMOUS, FAMOUS QUEBEC AND FAMOUS KIDS in many movie lovers’ filmographies. IS HANDLED BY CINEPLEX MEDIA. I would like to go on the record to say that, I, Marni Weisz, editor of a national movie magazine, have HEAD OFFICE 416.539.8800 GENERAL MANAGER ROBERT BROWN (ext. 232) never seen King Kong. I thought I had, but then I realized I was NATIONAL SALES MANAGER JOHN TSIRLIS (ext. 237) confusing it with 1949’s Mighty Joe Young, another movie about a DIRECTOR OF SALES ANTON KIM (ext. 238) gorilla brought from Africa to the States by a Hollywood promoter ACCOUNT MANAGERS ZOLTAN TOTH (ext. 233) looking to make a buck. Just like Kong, an exploited Mighty Joe

JENNA PATERSON (ext. 243) 100 2 5 25 50 75 95 98 breaks loose and wreaks havoc. So you can understand my error. BEN MUNGER (ext. 235) It’s for exactly this reason that Peter Jackson’s new remake of SALES & MARKETING CAROL BRATHWAITE (ext. 256) King Kong isn’t such a bad idea. At a time when so many questions CO-ORDINATOR begin, “Why on Earth are they remaking…” this redo actually makes some sense. In “Finding her Wray,” page 40, NAOMI WATTS talks BRITISH COLUMBIA 604.904.8622 about the delights and challenges of taking over Fay Wray’s role as WESTERN SALES MANAGER DIANE RAJH the object of the big ape’s animal desires. ALBERTA 403.266.4412 You may be surprised to see CHARLIZE THERON in this month’s WESTERN SALES MANAGER ELIZABETH D’ARTOIS slick sci-fi action pic Aeon Flux. After all, hasn’t the leggy South African gotten all serious on us? There was her Oscar- QUEBEC 514.868.0005 winning turn as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster, then her DIRECTOR OF SALES SOPHIE JODOIN (ext. 222) wrenching performance as a sexually harassed miner in October’s SALES CO-ORDINATOR PATRICIA CARPENTIER (ext. 223) true-ish North Country. So what’s up? 100 2 5 25 50 75 95 98 Truth is she signed on to do Aeon Flux before she’d even won SPECIAL THANKS MATHIEU CHANTELOIS the Oscar, not that she would have changed her mind. TOM GREEN, GIFTED RAPPER 100 2 5 25 50 75 95 98 He’s survived a cable access show, testicular cancer and harrowing Freddy Got Fingered reviews. If there’s one thing Tom Green’s learned it’s that you shouldn’t worry about stuff you can’t control and should focus on having fun, which explains why the Canadian comedian is returning to his first love: rap music. Green’s debut rap CD, Prepare for Impact (in stores December 6th), is a throwback to Green’s early years in Ottawa where he was a teenage rap sensation. “I started playing a lot of shows around Ottawa and got a record deal,” says Green on the line from a Toronto studio where he’s busy editing a top-secret new movie he wrote and directed (due out next year). “I got the record deal right before I got cancer and ended up not being able to complete that record,” remembers Green, “and during that process I built a whole recording studio, but had to put the breaks on my music when I got sick.” 100 2 5 25 50 75 95 98 Prepare for Impact sounds exactly how one would expect a Tom Green rap album to sound. Songs such as “My Bum is on Ya Lips,” “I’m an Idiot” and “I Like Hooters” capture Green’s goofball, bodily functions-obsessed charm. The surprise is discovering that Green can really rhyme. Green kicks off a cross-Canada Keepin’ It Real Crew tour this January, and don’t be surprised if you see some real live Hooters gals on stage with the rapper. “When we roll into each town we’ll usually eat lunch at the Hooters and basically ask the waitress if they’d like to dance on stage, and they usually want to. It’s not like we’re travelling with

them or anything…I wish.” —IR 100 2 5 25 50 75 95 98

PLAYING COWBOYS 3/C JAKE GYLLENHAAL and Heath Ledger fall for each other in Ang Lee’s award-winning BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN. B Here Gyllenhaal opens up about playing gay I BY MATHIEU CHANTELOIS G hen he was a young boy, Jake Gyllenhaal dreamed of being a firefighter. “I was so wrong,” he says, thinking R Wback. “It was my friends who wanted to be cowboys that had it right. There is nothing cooler than being a cowboy.” And if the hat fits… Gyllenhaal does look ruggedly handsome with a wide Stetson sitting atop his head in his first western, Brokeback Mountain — a movie that has, since its world premiere this summer, been receiving nothing but praise for its sensitive script and breathtaking beauty. A day after the film’s North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, Gyllenhaal is clearly jubilant about the response the film has garnered so far. His smile is white and wide, his blinking eyes gigantic and blue. He has already read a couple of reviews this morning — 100 2 5 25 50 75 95 98 everywhere there is praise for the raw direction of filmmaker Ang Lee (The Ice Storm, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), and for Gyllenhaal. This same weekend the Venice International Film Festival handed Brokeback Mountain the Golden Lion for Best Film, the festival’s highest honour. An actor best-known for soulful portrayals of misunder- stood, sensitive young men (October Sky, Moonlight Mile, The Good Girl), this film gives the 24-year-old a chance to give one of his most mature performances yet. “This is my first gay character and the most masculine portrayal I have undertaken on screen. It marks a turning point in my career,” the actor says, then pauses for a couple of seconds and adds, “but I can’t stop to think about that 100 2 5 25 50 75 95 98 because it goes against the nature of my work.” Adapted from a short story by American author Annie Proulx that was first published in a 1997 issue of The New Yorker, Brokeback Mountain tells of the forbidden love affair between Jack Twist (Gyllenhaal) and Ennis del Mar (Heath Ledger), two cowboys hired to tend sheep on a Wyoming mountain one summer in the 1960s. Hostile toward each other at first, the two develop a deep bond Heath Ledger (left) and Gyllenhaal and quickly become friends, then lovers. At the end of the summer

But four years, two marriages and several children later, they find themselves face to face again, and realize their feel- ings haven’t been dulled by the passage of time. “It is a film about the ero- sion of time that reminds us that we need to do what we want to do in life. We need to fight for what we believe in,” explains Gyllenhaal. Speaking of fighting for what one believes in, it took more Jake Gyllenhaal as than six years for producer James Schamus to find the 100 2 5 25 50 75 95 98 cowboy Jack Twist

The Aeon Flux announcement was just shortly after you won the Oscar. “But I had said yes, then they go and do all the paperwork and all of that stuff. I had completely committed myself to the two projects of Aeon Flux and North Country because of directors Karyn Kusama and because of Niki Caro [North Country’s direc- tor, who’d previously made a splash with Whale Rider]. style | National dress Over the past year Famous style columns have bowed at the well-shod feet of international trendsetters like Mouret, Balenciaga, Chloe, Armani and Lang. But we’d be remiss if we let the year draw to a close without paying attention to some of the great talent we have at home. Here are five of our faves I By Mathieu Chantelois, Jean-Francois Légaré and Émilie Villeneuve ANDY THÊ-ANH The three letters comprising designer Andy Thê-Ahn’s label, P.O.W., stand for Power of Women, but also form an onomatopoeia that fits. The Quebecer’s collections, which explode with shape and colour, have been delighting Montreal fashionistas for five years now. We remember his summer 2004 line with an almost childlike nostalgia, those satin skirts in electric reds and blues! This fall, Thê-Ahn presents a line that’s as much military as romantic, as if lifted from 19th-century Russia. Shades of black and violet set off luminous lilacs, while printed silk ribbons hug waistlines. The Vietnamese-born designer renounces the concept of a single look, opting instead for an amalgam of structured pieces, starched fabrics and light, floral-print chiffons, proving that opposites do attract. —ÉV ARTHUR MONDONÇA In the kingdom of designers, there is a King Arthur. Not yet 30 years old, he’s already been lauded on the runways of Los Angeles, Sao Paolo and Montreal. And everywhere, nothing but accolades for this designer who was still a fashion student at Toronto’s Ryerson University just three years ago. But once ultra-chic Wallpaper* magazine gushed over Mendonça, it wasn’t long before the rest of the fashion media followed suit: “A rising star,” trumpeted British Vogue. “The next Alfred Sung,” proclaimed Toronto Life. “The designer to watch,” announced Elle Canada. His collections seduce with modernity and sensuality, his fabrics are sumptuous, his lines striking, and his fits masterly. —MC

10 B STARS TALK ABOUT FAITH I BY SUSAN GRANGER G R BRITNEY SPEARS “I believe in the power of prayer. I’m a practicing Baptist. I had a Bible book that I prayed in, night after night. I would pray, ‘I hope my song plays on a certain radio station that’s really big,’ and it happened. Then I was like, ‘I pray they play it on MTV.’ I am totally blessed.”

JOHN MALKOVICH “I believe in people. I believe in humans. I believe in a car. But I don’t believe in something I can

have absolutely no evidence of.” 100 2 5 25 50 75 95 98

JENNIFER LOPEZ “Although, as a good Catholic, I went to church every Sunday, it wasn’t until I was an adult that I realized how important it is to have a relationship with God. God is a very big part of my life. I pray a lot.”

BILL GATES “Religion is not very efficient. There’s a lot more I could be doing on a Sunday morning.”

WESLEY SNIPES “I never fail to pray before a meal.”

JOHN WOO “I am a Christian and I love doves. Doves represent the purity of love, 100 2 5 25 50 75 95 98 beauty. They’re spiritual.
