This study uncovers the potential of traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) from the perspective of indigenous communities in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, and explores how TEK helps them to observe and respond to local climate change. Data were collected through interviews and field work observations and analysed using thematic analysis based on the TEK framework. The results indicated that these communities have observed a significant increase in temperature, with uncertain weather and seasons. Consequently, drought and wildfires have had a substantial impact on their livelihoods. However, they have responded to this by managing their customary land and resources to ensure food and resource security, which provides a respectable example of the sustainable management of terrestrial and inland ecosystems. The social networks and institutions of indigenous communities enable collective action which strengthens the reciprocal relationships that they rely on when calamity strikes. -

Distribution of Sunda Stink-badger Mydaus javanensis in Sarawak, Malaysia Abstract Belden GIMAN and Alex JUKIE Mydaus javanensis is one of the least studied mammals in the island of Borneo. Standard sources The Sunda Stink-badger (Teledu) imply that it occurs throughout Sarawak, but this stance is not supported by the few, and geographically restricted records here traced in a review of records from the state. Historical specimens and recent sightings, in the context of survey effort across the state, suggest that Sunda Stink-badger does not occur south of Miri Division, and may even be erratic in occurrence outside Keywordsthe northernmost: Borneo, part of the state. However, reports concerning the incidence and spread of cholera in these countries are infrequently made available to the international community. Cholera is endemic in Sarawak, Malaysia. We report here the epidemiologic and demographic data obtained from nine divisions of Sarawak for the ten years from 1994 to 2003 and discuss factors associated with the emergence and spread of cholera and its control. In ten years, 1672 cholera patients were recorded. High incidence of cholera was observed during the unusually strong El Niño years of 1997 to 1998 when a very severe and prolonged drought occurred in Sarawak. Cholera is endemic in the squatter towns and coastal areas especially those along the Sarawak river estuaries. -

Lian Human ResourceConsultant Miri, Sarawak THE'ORANG ULU' 'Orang 'Orang Who are the Ulu'? The term Ulu' is not a legal term and no such racial group is listed in the Malaysian constitution. It is a term politically coined to group together 27 very small but ethnically diverse groupsin Sarawakwith a population ranging from less than 300 persons to over 25,000 persons.Together they totalled approximately 150,000 persons (0.04% of Malaysian population in 2000). In the state of Sarawak,they are the fifth largest of the minority groups after the Iban, Chinese, Malay and Bidayuh. The other minority groups are the Melanausand Indians. The Orang Ulus are found largely in the inland areas of Kapit, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang division of Sarawak. Within these divisions each ethnic group is concentrated within a specific geographical location. Unlike other ethnic groups, for example the Iban, the Orang Ulus normally do not move from region to region in rural Sarawak. However, in the last few decadesmany have migrated to urban towns and cities, especially to Lawas, Limbang, Miri, Bintulq*Kuching and even Kuala Lumpur. In some of these towns, especially Miri, they form a significant percentageof urban squatters.As a result a common demographic trend in Orang Ulu longhousesand villages is depopulation as the middle age and younger generationsmove to the urban areas in search for job and education (Lian, 1987). This occurred even among the remote groups suchas the Kelabits which registered a staggering rural-urban migration rate of approximately 68% (Ose & Andrew, 2003). -

INTERNATIONAL TROPICAL TIMBER ORGANIZATION ITTO PROJECT DOCUMENT TITLE BUFFER ZONE MANAGEMENT FOR PULONG TAU NATIONAL PARK WITH INVOLVEMENT OF LOCAL COMMUNITIES IN SARAWAK, MALAYSIA SERIAL NUMBER PD 635/12 Rev.2 (F) COMMITTEE REFORESTATION AND FOREST MANAGEMENT SUBMITTED BY GOVERNMENT OF MALAYSIA ORIGINAL LANGUAGE ENGLISH SUMMARY When the Pulong Tau National Park (PTNP) was created in 2005, the local ethnic communities were not granted privileges to use the park’s resources for subsistence, while the forests outside the park were already licensed for logging long before 2005. Many of the communities are still forest-dependent even up to the present day. The need to safeguard the Totally Protected Areas’ (TPAs) rich resources from anthropogenic activities is becoming increasingly necessary and urgent. The development objective of the project proposal is to contribute to the integrated development of the buffer zone for environmental conservation and uplifting local communities livelihood. The specific objective is to secure the buffer zone’s forest for use by indigenous communities and to strengthen the protection of Pulong Tau. These objectives will be achieved through the establishment of 6,000 ha of the buffer zone, and securing a forest base to meet the communities’ needs. The project objectives and outputs will be met through integrated buffer zone management, training, and active involvement of primary and secondary stakeholders. The project will be sustained by Forest Department Sarawak (FDS) through its Community Service Initiative Unit (CSIU). Br. has been re-found in the wild in Lawas District, Limbang Division, Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo for the first time since its discovery (at an unspecified North Bornean location) by Frederick Burbidge sometime between 1877 and 1878. A modified species description and photographs of the living plant and reproductions of the original illustrations are presented. Keywords Araceae, Piptospatha, Schismatoglottideae, geology, sandstone, Malaysian Borneo, Sarawak. Introduction Highlighting remarkable aroids known from only single collections Boyce & Wong (2012) drew attention to Piptospatha insignis N.E.Br., the Type species of the genus Piptospatha, not re-found in the wild for over 135 years. It was noted that the geographical imprecision of Burbidge’s collecting site was an impediment to relocating the species in the wild, especially since so many rheophytic aroids are locally endemic, although narrowing down the possible search area could be aided from the literature and herbarium specimen data. It is known, based on notes accompanying the description of P. insignis (Brown 1879), that he (Brown) at the time had another Burbidge collection to hand representing another probable new genus. This plant was Gamogyne (now Piptospatha) burbidgei which Burbidge collected from Bukit Sagan, a mountain on the border with Brunei and that this was received at Kew on 21 February 1878. Figure 1. -
