Let’s get right to it: Why the Maccabiah Games? Why do we, at Maccabi USA - and - do what we do?

Why do many hundreds of volunteers put so much effort into organizing over 8,500 participants to create the world’s third largest international sports event?

Why do we work so hard to raise and spend millions of dollars in order to bring all these athletes to Israel—and do it again, every four years?

Why do we invest so many resources to involve Jews from over 70 nations to participate and compete in 37 different sports? Why do we never question ourselves, knowing that the majority of people on this planet are prejudiced against us and do not wish us well?

Actually, this is one of the main reasons. We never stop believing in our uniqueness and in the strength of our identity as Jews— the very same points that outsiders might condemn us for. We want to prove to ourselves that we are bonded. We are committed to bring the younger generation into our fold so they, too, can share that connection to both our past and our future. And we wish to demonstrate to the world who we truly are—honorable, proud and strong people. Rather than be cowed by a misperception of us, we put our best face forward so that the world can see what Jews are made of. Sports is our means to accomplish that.

At a time when routine religious practices are becoming the focus of fewer Jews, as fast-changing realities lure our younger generation to spread its wings into fields never before known to humanity, we pull them back through sports. No other interest can physically bring together so many people as do sport competitions. Once physically with us, we take the opportunity to expose their hearts and minds to the great spirit of the Jewish people and the miracle of the State of Israel. We return to each athlete a piece of themselves he or she hadn’t known was missing.

When we put a Jewish youngster from Kansas together with others from , , or any of the other 70 nations, he or she learns more about themselves and our people than any lecture can impart. The opportunity to compete against other Jews in soccer, swimming, basketball or track creates the backdrop for the sense of our people—their similarities and their closeness across international boundaries.

I have been associated with this brilliant concept and its organization for the past 27 years and I still get excited when I am told by athletes—either recent participants or decades-ago alumni—that the Maccabiah was “one of the greatest experiences in my life” or “was a life-changing experience.”

Indeed, the Maccabiah Games are a life-altering event for the athletes, supporters and volunteers. It is a transformative experience that gives the participants a new perspective of themselves--as athletes, as Americans and as Jews. While it reinforces the centrality of Israel to Jewish security and pride, it is also an emotional journey in which many lifelong friendships are formed. What starts as a fun-filled competitive sports event turns into a journey of discovery, friendship, Jewish awareness and pride.

Athletes who just happen to be Jewish, return home as proud Jewish athletes. This year in !

Dear USA Maccabiah Team Member:

On behalf of the USA Medical Team, we would like to extend our congratulations on your selection to represent the USA at the upcoming 19th World Maccabiah Games in Israel. Our hope is that this experience will be a memorable one, and set the stage for further personal and athletic endeavors. The goal of the Medical Team is to help support your experience and provide medical care should that become necessary. We have assembled an excellent group of experienced Physicians, Nurses and Athletic Trainers to serve and support the needs of the Maccabi USA contingent. You will be well cared for by our medical staff, and by the health services available to us in Israel.

Please be mindful that the Medical staff have all volunteered their time and have, at their own expense, come to help and also experience the Maccabiah Games. In the evenings, nurses and physicians may be paged for medical EMERGENCIES through your coaches or team captains. All routine concerns will be dealt with in the morning clinics.

Please make sure that any ongoing medical problems are re-evaluated by your physician prior to your departure. If you have a specific medical condition that may need attention in Israel, please let me know, and I will be happy to discuss with you any concerns, and also will be available to discuss care issues with your treating physician if deemed appropriate.

You should also be prepared to bring all necessary personal medications with you to Israel. This would include over-the-counter medications that you have familiarity with and have found useful for minor problems – such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Obtaining specific refills or medications may not be possible in Israel.

HIGH TAPING REQUIREMENTS - Also, there will be a limited amount of taping supplies available. If you have HIGH TAPING REQUIREMENTS, such as daily ankle taping, we strongly suggest you bring a personal supply of tape to ensure availability for yourself. You may consider use of athletic ankle braces that can substitute for taping as a short and or long-term alternative.

The USA Medical Team would like to ensure that your activity and participation in the 19th World Maccabiah Games are both safe and enjoyable. Our Medical staff is ready to help you with any problems that may arise. If you have any questions at all concerning health issues, medical concerns, or potential needs please inform us prior to your departure. It is easier for our staff to deal with these needs if we are notified in advance.

Sincerely,

Merrick Wetzler M.D. Team USA Medical Chair 19th World Maccabiah Games

Dear Members of Team USA:

It is with great excitement and enthusiasm that I write to you on behalf of the United States Management Team for the 19th Maccabiah Games. We have assembled an incredibly talented and dedicated group of volunteer managers who come from a variety of backgrounds and who have together experienced over 100 international Maccabi events. Our primary goal is to ensure that your experience is as safe, enjoyable, and meaningful as possible. From transportation, meals and accommodation details, to touring and competition, we will be working closely with Maccabi USA leadership, your coaches, and the Israeli organizers to support and assist you in every way possible.

Here are some important thoughts to keep in mind as you prepare for Israel:

Your safety is our first priority. Follow all safety instructions and use common sense (do not wander around alone, keep valuables locked in a safe place, remain alert). Notify your coaches or a manager of your whereabouts at all times.

Maintain a positive attitude, a sense of humor, and remember that not everything will go exactly as planned. This is an international sporting event with thousands of participants. The organizers are very well-prepared, but knowing in advance that things may change will help you to better deal with last minute surprises.

Take full advantage of the amazing Israel Connect Program that has been planned for all Open and Juniors Athletes and the other non-athletic opportunities. Get to know your fellow competitors from the different countries as well as other members of Team USA. This is an once-in-a-lifetime experience for many of you and it is about much more than just athletic competition.

Remember that at all times you are representing not only yourself and your team, but Maccabi USA and your country. You are one of a select group of individuals who have the opportunity to represent their country in an international athletic competition. Sportsmanship, respect, and class should guide your behavior on and off the field of play.

You have received an email that outlines procedures and policies for Athletes/Staff that want to spend time with family/friends in Israel. This note is also available on the online forms site.

Again, we will be available to help you in any way possible; please don’t hesitate to ask any one of us for assistance. See you at the airport!

Sincerely,

Lou Moyerman, Philadelphia PA - USA Team Manager

You can exchange US dollars for shekels at ATMs for the best exchange rate. Most credit cards are accepted as well. There are coins for .10IL (agorot), .50IL (chetzie), 1, 2, 5, and 10 shekels, and bills for 20, 50, 100, and 200 shekels.

DRESS Dress in Israel is generally informal, and casual clothing is the norm. It is recommended to take comfortable shoes, a hat, bathing suit, shorts, pants, shirts, and one or two nice, but casual outfits for special Shabbat evenings—ties are unnecessary. For more information about dress, please refer to our suggested packing list. It will be summer in Israel, so temperatures will be around 90˚ during the day (often humid), and about 75˚ at night. 2 Tel Aviv’s weather is typically more humid as it further north, whereas Jerusalem cools down at night because it is in the mountains.

ELECTRICITY (230V, 50 cycles) If you plan to take any plug-in appliances, please note that a European-style adapter plug with two rounded prongs and a converter are required. Depending on how much you plan to travel in the future, it may be worthwhile to get a combination voltage converter and plug adapter.

FOOD Food will mostly be buffet-style, unless you are traveling or competing. Israeli breakfast is delicious, but very different than typical-American breakfast. For example, Israelis eat lots of fresh veggies for breakfast alongside eggs, tahini, and some hummus. Depending on what’s in season, fruit may also be served. Soft cheeses are also popular during breakfast. Dinner is usually a meat with a grain and potatoes although vegetarian options will be available. Typical Israeli dinner buffets have a large salad spread with different types of chopped salads. Feel free to bring your own energy bars or snack food if you have diet issues or are picky with your diet.

It is important to keep yourself healthy, hydration is the key!

RABBI Our Team USA Rabbi is Daniel Greyber from Durham, North Carolina, where he is the Rabbi of Beth El Synagogue. He was a gold medalist and captain of USA’s Swimming team at the World Maccabiah Games in 1993. Rabbi Greyber will be assisted by Rabbi Noam Raucher who is originally from Hamden, Connecticut. He now works as 7 the assistant Rabbi at Temple Israel of Charlotte, North Carolina. Rabbi Raucher was a Manager for Team USA at the 17th World Maccabiah Games in 2005.

SECURITY Please rest assured that keeping you safe while in Israel is the top priority of Maccabi USA and all of the Maccabiah organizers. Maccabi USA will be bringing a security team in addition to working with Israel’s security team directly. As we have expressed many times, that if the Games are on, Team USA is participating. We are in constant contact with the Israeli Organizers and they are dealing with the highest levels of the security folk there. We are comfortable that Israel will take the proper precautions to keep everyone safe. Some important numbers to have with you: Magen David Adom is Israel's national emergency medical, disaster, ambulance and blood bank service. Their number is 101. Police general emergency number is 100. Moked (local general information) number is 077-8981919 SHABBAT Friday evening marks the beginning of Shabbat, which lasts until Saturday evening. Thus, the work week in Israel is typically Sunday through Thursday. Shabbat is a time to reflect on the upcoming week, as many families celebrate by sitting down to dinner together on Friday evening. In most areas of Israel, you will see most stores and restaurants closed on Saturdays, with less traffic and less people in the street. There will be no competition during the Shabbats of the Maccabiah—July 20 and 27.

SPENDING MONEY A commonly-asked question is how much money athletes should bring. This is a very personal issue. You will need money for personal expenses like gifts, snacks, and things outside of the Games package that you choose. ATMs and credit cards are common in Israel and you will probably receive the best exchange rate with them. Additional Details: Delegates are free to bring their own unlocked USA smart phone and rent an IsraelPhones SIM card. Please note the device must be designed for GSM usage, which allows the phone to use a SIM Card. Additionally, your phone must be unlocked for use with a foreign SIM card. The information sections below outline the major cellular service providers and the common SmartPhones in use in the United States, as well as the requirements needed for your phone to be used with an IsraelPhones SIM card. In order to check if your phone is unlocked, you must contact your cellular phone provider directly- neither the Maccabi USA Office nor IsraelPhones can provide information regarding the unlock process of your phone. Please read the enclosed information carefully and know that you can also opt to rent an actual cell phone through IsraelPhones while in Israel.

How do I know what type of SIM card I have? There are three types of SIM cards on the market: Regular SIM cards, MicroSIM cards, and NanoSIM cards. The best way to determine what type of SIM card your phone uses it to review your phone’s user manual. You can also check by removing the SIM card from your phone. The specifications for each SIM card type are as follows:

NanoSIM Card: 1.23 cm long

MicroSIM Card: 1.5 cm long

Regular SIM card: 2.5 cm long Most phones use a regular SIM card. The following list is quick reference of the most common SmartPhones and the SIM card that they use: Regular Sim Card: iPhone 3 and earlier iPhone models BlackBerry prior to BB10 MicroSIM card: iPhone 4 Nokia Lumia 710 HTC Delux DLX iPhone 4S Nokia Lumia 800 HTC One S LG Nexus 4 Nokia N9 HTC One X Motorola Droid Razr Sony Xperia S Samsung Galaxy SIII NanoSIM card: iPhone 5

Please note that the above list is an incomplete list of phones, and should not be used as a final authority. Please check your phone manual, the actual SIM card your phone uses, or your device’s manufacturer to make the final determination for the appropriate SIM card to use in Israel. If your phone does not use a SIM card at all, then unfortunately, your phone is not compatible for use in Israel using an IsraelPhones SIM card.

How do I check to see if my phone is unlocked for use with a foreign SIM card? To check to see if your phone is unlocked, you must contact your cellular service provider. Below is a quick reference list of major US Cell phone providers that provide service for GSM phones (this is not a complete listing of cellular phone providers in the United States, and your provider may not be included with this list): AT&T Sprint

One of the most commonly asked questions is the pronunciation of our name. We are Maccabi (Ma•Ca’•Bi) USA/Sports for Israel, one of the 55 Territorial Organizations that comprise Maccabi World Union. The Maccabi Movement, named for Judah (The Hammer) Maccabee (Mac’•A•Bee, and in Hebrew – “Yehuda Ha•Ma•Ca•Bee’,” the hero of Chanukah), was founded in 1895 when an all-Jewish Maccabi Gymnastics Club was formed in Constantinople. By the end of World War I, more than 100 Maccabi-style clubs existed in Europe.

The First Maccabiah Games, featuring 14 countries and 390 athletes, was held in 1932. World events forced the delay of the Third Maccabiah Games, scheduled for 1938, until 1950. The Maccabiah Games have been a quadrennial event since 1953. Only these Games are called “Maccabiah”. Today Maccabi World Union, located at Kfar Hamaccabiah, in Israel, has over 400,000 members worldwide.

World Maccabiah Games

The World Maccabiah Games, sometimes referred to as the Jewish Olympics, is among the top international sporting events in the world. Jewish athletes come from all over the world come to the State of Israel. For two unforgettable weeks, Jews of all ages and backgrounds convene to share their culture, their history and their values. The correct pronunciation of Maccabiah is Ma•Ca•Bee’•Ah in English, and Ha•Ma•Ca•Be•Ah’ in Hebrew. This may make it even more confusing – but both pronunciations are okay. So don’t worry and just enjoy your Maccabiah Experience! The next Maccabiah Games are scheduled for July, 2013. Light the Fire Within!
