The San Francisco Examiner takes a close look at Alex Clare “There’s a great deal of optimism coursing through British artist Alex Clare’s latest release “Tail of Lions,” in songs such as “Get Real,” “Gotta Get Up,” “Love Can Heal” and “You’ll Be Fine.” But on the dinosaur-stomping rocker “Open My Eyes,” he wanted to raise a couple of dark socio-political points. “Like, why — after years of stasis in the U.S. — things suddenly shifted to the right, and why in the U.K. people who were saying, ‘Our way of life is under attack’ started blaming other people who weren’t necessarily born in the U.K.,” he says. “It’s a question for those in charge: Why are you allowing this to happen?”

Examiner: You’re famous for your 2012 worldwide hit “Too Close,” which was used in an Internet Explorer 9 ad. But you’re also a serious student of Orthodox Judaism who moved to Jerusalem two years ago, right? Clare: Yes. And it’s a wonderful, really special place, I moved with my wife and two kids, because I spend so much time here anyway, going back and forth between London and Jerusalem on breaks and holidays. And you know what? It’s warmer here and people are nicer. And — being in the career I’m in — I can be wherever I want to be, and it doesn’t have too much of an effect on what I have to do. And I travel so much anyway, I just thought I should be based in a city where I wanted to be. Examiner: And there’s so much religious history there, you probably learn new things daily by just walking around town. Clare: That’s part of its attraction; the infrastructure here is just geared towards that. But on a daily basis, I’m still doing pretty much the same stuff I did in London. I wake up, start the day the Jewish way, come home and have breakfast, then spend the afternoon in the studio, and then spend the evening with my kids. And yes, there’s a ton of religious history here. But it’s also a very cosmopolitan city, with all backgrounds, all religions and a very vibrant music scene, with Western bar culture. It’s really buzzing. Examiner: Do you find songs in your faith? Or are they mutually exclusive things? Clare: Well, when I write a song, I don’t really write a Jewish song, you know? I’m a Jewish person, and I’m very much a reli- gious person, and my outlook is certainly influenced by that headspace, and what I’m thinking and feeling. But when I write, that’s not my goal. It’s to articulate a particular emotion. It has to be cathartic. And of course, there will be moments where I might reference something religious. But I try not to be explicit with it.” - SF Examiner, 11/2/17 Glide Magazine goes nuts for JD McPherson’s Brooklyn set “The crowd came out in droves to see JD McPher- son and his band tear up the dance floor with their fiery, grooves. at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg on November 7. 2017. McPherson, ever the class act and with stel- lar stage presence, gave them and the rest of the packed room exactly what they wanted: an energetic, go for broke perfor- mance. His new record Undivided Heart and Soul takes him in a slightly more evolved sonic direction, with a more contemporary rock and roll sound than the retro sound of 2015’s Let the Good Times Roll. McPherson relocated to Nashville from before recording Undivided Heart and Soul, and there’s a feeling of discovery and trying on new identities in its songs that lends excitement to his live performance of them. You get a sense from watching him that he’s exactly where he’s supposed to be. McPherson, dressed in head to toe denim (a rock and roll uniform if ever there was one), came in hot with opener “Bossy”, off Let the Good Times Roll before launching into the new stuff, like the woozy “Desperate Love” and the soft, surf guitar groove “On the Lips”. McPherson’s smooth, soulful voice is stronger than ever on Undivided Heart and Soul and his confidence shows in his live show. Opener (and powerful vocalist herself) Nicole Atkins joined McPherson on stage for the title track off Undivided Heart and Soul – a treat, as she’s also featured with him on the record for this song. The rest of the show was a straight shot of adrenaline, as McPherson had the audience swooning to “Hunting for Sugar”, and dancing nonstop to songs like “Caroline”, “Lucky Penny” (which the guys recently performed on Conan), “Crying’s Just a Thing That You Do” and “Head Over Heels”. By the time the encore came, the foot stomping and chant- ing brought the band back out in a flash. They shut it down with “Style (Is a Losing Game)”, “Bloodhound Rock”, “Wolf Teeth” and “Northside Gal”, and with sweat dripping down their faces, they took a well-deserved bow.” - Glide, 11/11/17 Going for adds 1/8: They Might Be Giants “I Left My Body” RIGHT ARM RESOURCE WEEKLY UPDATE - 11/15/2017
