2018 COMMUNITY IMPACT REPORT Letter from the Board Chair

Dear CYC Community,

The Youth Collaborative story started over 30 years ago, and our legacy is over 185,000 students strong! We do not take this legacy for granted as we work to write the next chapter and bring our core supports to students throughout the community. Our committed staff, volunteers and productive community partnerships continue to change the life trajectory for thousands of students every year. You will enjoy reading this years’ community impact report, which illustrates the new levels of success that have been achieved by many of our students.

Supporting CYC is an excellent investment. If you wondered whether your contribution matters, let me assure you it is essential! Over the last 3 years, we have experienced over 22% growth in the annual number of students we are able to serve. This is directly because of the generous investment made to carry out our mission. On behalf of all the CYC family we thank you, AND, we invite you to continue to partner with us in serving even more students over the next 3 years.

Finally, we hope that all of you have met, or will soon meet our new President and CEO Ericka C. Dansby. We are very excited as an organization to have such a dynamic leader with Ericka’s experience and passion for our youth, coupled with her extensive nonprofit experience and leadership.

Our legacy is strong, and our future is very bright.

Warm Regards,

Toi Clarke Jones, CYC Board Chair

Dear Friends of the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative,

It is an honor and a privilege to be able to present to you our 2017—2018 Community Impact Report, as the new President and CEO of the Cincinnati Youth Collaborative. In my short time here at CYC, our core values of Passion, Integrity, Accountability, Empowerment, and Community, have proven to be the foundation upon which our work is built.

Our passion enabled us to serve over 5,700 students in five different school districts during the 2017—2018 school year (a nearly 15% increase over last year).

Our integrity and accountability led to the completion of our 2017 financial audit with flying colors.

Our ability to provide empowerment to the youth that we serve resulted in 92% of CYC seniors successfully transitioning into the next path of their journey through one of our 3 E’s — Enrollment, Employment, or Enlistment.

We continue as an organization to put community investment and impact as our main priority through our three primary pillars of supports — mentoring, college and career success, and work readiness.

The 2017—2018 school year was a tremendous success that included growth and expansion for our organization. Within this year’s Community Impact Report you have an opportunity to see the results that we accomplished and the work we continue to do. Please know that you are provided an open door to engage with us in some capacity, whether through volunteering, attending an event, giving, or just spreading the good news!

CYC’s history is over 30 years strong, and we continue to utilize the framework of a collective impact model to generate and create resilience in our communities. 8 Cincinnati Youth Collaborative CYC Outstanding Student Award Winners Highlights Meet Jada Carter! “CYC connected me with many different people who can help me. They helped me get through school. They’re helping me with a lot of different things…their plan plus my plan put together, it’s going to be magic! It’s going to be amazing!”

Jada is a force of positivity and determination. Even faced with tremendous obstacles, including homelessness and gun violence, she has risen above and doesn’t let anything get in her way to achieve her goals. An entrepreneur and a leader, Jada started a dance team while a student at Woodward Career Technical High School, and she is currently attending Cosmetology School as she pursues her dream of owning and managing her own hair salon. Jada shares, “CYC Advisor Mr. Gibert has been a shining star in my life, always offering encouragement and providing resources that I never would have found out about. Even in my homelessness, he took time to understand my situation and always gave me a helping hand. For that, I am eternally grateful and I feel that if it wasn’t for his guidance in my life, I wouldn’t have made it through my senior year.”

Meet Bryan Madrid! “CYC’s Jobs for Cincinnati Graduates is a class where they focus on you. This class helped me plan better, made me a better leader, and made me aware that there were so many qualities of me I didn’t even know I had. Everything has just been put together for me and it’s thanks to CYC.”

This philanthropic leader is a 2018 graduate of Western Hills University High School and CYC’s Jobs for Cincinnati Graduates (JCG) program. Bryan’s high school career is one that inspires and encourages the heart. He is a kind young man and has shown remarkable leadership and empathy for helping others. 10 Cincinnati Youth Collaborative CYC Outstanding Student Award Winners Highlights

Meet Elijah Harris! “My CYC advisor, Ms. Jamie, helped me fill out all the applications for college, and if it weren’t for her, I might not be going. CYC provided me with that information which helped me get to where I am now.”

This resilient and positive young man is a 2018 graduate of Norwood High School and CYC’s College and Career Success program. During his time at Norwood High School, Elijah had faced a variety of economic challenges. These challenges were not seen as shortcomings, but fuel for Elijah’s grit and determination to succeed. He maximized every second of his day at school to ensure that his homework was completed prior to the end of the school day. This meant using his lunch bell to study in the library instead of socializing with friends. Elijah’s schedule included three honors courses, an AP course, a demanding calculus class, and a fifth year level of Spanish. His CYC advisor, Jamie Kemp shares, “I can genuinely say that Elijah took on the most rigorous schedule of any senior in his class. Elijah’s work ethic is truly inspiring.” Elijah is currently attending Ohio Northern University and studying engineering.

Meet Lidya Tesfamariam! “Because of CYC and my CYC Advisor, Mr. Jordan, I’m able to be successful. The encouraging ideas that he and CYC have given me have empowered me to tell myself, ‘Lidya just go for it, there is nothing that can stop you, just strive for it, and of course you will reach your goals.’”

Lidya is a 2018 graduate of Withrow University High School and CYC’s College and Career Success program. This driven and compassionate young lady has overcome so many challenges and obstacles in her young life. A refugee from Eritrea, Lidya’s safety and well-being were at-stake in her country. Ultimately, she bravely chose to leave home for the neighboring country of Djibouti. It was a treacherously long and frightening journey by foot, but Lidya finally made her way to safety. Upon entering Djibouti, Lidya was able to apply for a visa to come to the United States to reside with her father. Lidya has only been in the States since 2016, and in this short period of time, she managed to master the English language and take on employment as an ESL tutor for young children. Additionally, she graduated with a 4.0 GPA and in the top 3% of her class. Lidya’s CYC advisor, Jordan Merrell, praises her achievements. He shares, “Lidya’s passion to always do the right thing is a driving force behind her decisions. She carries herself with great respect and responsibility and is a model student and leader.” Lidya is currently attending the University of Cincinnati where she is a nursing student. In her first semester at UC, she excelled with a 3.8 GPA!
