CIU Individual champion crowned OBITUARY

Henry Mitchell It is with much sadness that Swinton (Bottom Club) Rotherham, announce that Mr Henry Clark Mitchell has passed away at the age of 94. Originally from Grimsby before moving to Kilnhurst (Rotherham) after the Second World War, Henry was a stalwart of the club. He served with distinction in the Royal Navy as a Chief Petty Officer and survived the sinking of HMS Barham by a German U-boat in 1941 in which 841 men lost their lives. North East Metropolitan Branch recently held their Cribbage finals and both were very well attended. GARFORTH WMC SETS THE GOLD STANDARD

Garforth Working Men’s Club in Leeds was a worthy joint winner in the CIU-sponsored ‘Traditional Club of the Year’ category at the 2015 Club Awards thanks to its multi-faceted range of activities

But the community aspect of the enterprise has really given the club a high profile in the area with plenty of coverage in the local press. “We’ve now hosted the Garforth Arts Festival for the fourth year and that has been brilliant with musicians from all over the world coming through the doors to entertain and engage young people in the concert room. “We’re very proud to be part of the CIU and were delighted that President George Dawson was able to come down and visit the club last year.
